My 95 year-old grandmother took a fall and injured herself. Although she was treated at the local hospital, she was told her Medicaid had lapsed. How is this possible?

Medicad or Medicare? Medicad is regulated by the individual states, Medicare is requlated by the Fed gov.

I don't know your (or her) states policy on Medicad, but Medicare does not expire or lapse.

Sorry to hear about your grandmother, stusi.

I don't know anything about medicaid or medicare but you may find an answer on this site, where you can select a state.

There could be a couple of reasons. The number one reason would be that she didn't go to her redetermination appointment. That will end it pronto. If there is a "lapse" I doubt it's the Medicare portion. She should be on Medicare if she's 95. Some people are covered under both particularly if disability is a factor. Although her Medicaid may have lapsed, her Medicare would still be in force.
