PHOENIX (Reuters) - Flamboyant fitness guru Richard Simmons was cited by authorities for allegedly slapping a man in an airport who was poking fun at his exercise videos, police said on Thursday.
Simmons, 55, known for his tank tops and outrageous manner, was ticketed for misdemeanor assault after allegedly striking the man across the face while in line at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport on Wednesday night, police said.
"He apparently said 'Hey everybody, it's Richard Simmons, let's drop our bags and rock to the '50s,"' said Sgt. Lauri Williams, a reference to a series of his well-known videos. "Mr. Simmons took offense and said he had to 'b*tch slap' him."
The man, whose name was not immediately available, told police that he wanted to press charges against Simmons, who was cited and allowed to board a plane to Las Vegas.
Police said Simmons cooperated fully with police at the scene.

I smell a law suit. Whether the man wins is up for grabs. What would you do in that case? Put yourself in Richard Simmons place and tell us what you think.
My OPINION: The man should have kept his mouth shut.

Maybe so, but does not give flamboyant Richard Simmons the right to #*!@ slap anyone.
Hope this costs him a few bucks. The only thing I do not understand is why the "victim" did not deck the guy.

Actually I'd forgotten all about Richard Simmons but I always did find him slightly annoying.
Does he travel through airports in those outfits too? The article didn't say whether the guy that got b*tch slapped was being nasty or if he just made that comment for fun.

Simmons has been scamming obese people for over 20 years now. He can turn the tears on camera real quick when selling his junk on TV. He is just your average "nice on TV, prick in real life" type of person. The guy should have decked him good.

Scamming? how has he done that? He doesn't lie to anyone--he tells them (& shows 'em, too) that fitness comes from exercise, healthy eating, and a positive attitude. And there's nothing wrong with him selling books or videos or whatever to carry that message across.
He's over-the-top, yes. And hyperactive to the max. But he is also totally honest.
