Georgia House Bans Genital Piercings

Wed Mar 24, 6:21 PM ET

ATLANTA - Genital piercings for women were banned by the Georgia House Wednesday as lawmakers considered a bill outlining punishments for female genital mutilation.

The bill would make such mutilation punishable by two to 20 years in prison. It makes no exception for people who give consent to have the procedure performed on their daughters out of religious or cultural custom.

An amendment adopted without objection added "piercing" to the list of things that may not be done to female genitals. Even adult women would not be allowed to get the procedure. The bill eventually passed 160-0, with no debate.

Amendment sponsor Rep. Bill Heath, R-Bremen, was slack-jawed when told after the vote that some adults seek the piercings.

"What? I've never seen such a thing," Heath said. "I, uh, I wouldn't approve of anyone doing it. I don't think that's an appropriate thing to be doing."

The ban applies only to women, not men. The bill has already been approved by the Senate but now must return to that chamber because of the piercing amendment. Both chambers of the Legislature must agree on a single version of a bill before it can go to the governor for final approval.

How did someone decide at the last minute that that should be added and why? That's kind of a wierd amendment to pull out of thin air.

If it's really "common" sense, why do so few people actually have it?

It is kind of weird. Especially that Heath guy that had never heard of such a thing. lol

But I find it strange that Texas, Alabama and Georgia have banned vibrators but they allow the sale of firearms.

Seems like, little by little, women are once more losing control over their own bodies in this country...

I don't see the association, twelvepole. Which problem?

Should of added men to be "equal"...

Do you think the ban on the piercings should have been applied for men also?

If women in Georgia want a piercing bad enough they can go outside the state to get in done. Unless this stupid law will outlaw all women in Georgia from having one.

Is there any basis for passing this?

Health codes?
Religious issues?
Pornography laws?

Did this just come out of the blue, and why?

"...to have the procedure performed on their daughters out of religious or cultural custom. "

And which religion/culture would that be??? "Church of Da Biker Babe?", "HarleyDavidsonism?"

No way I'd want to be pierced like that, but I have no problem with others doing it.

There are many recent African immigrants that practice "female circumcision", which in effect cuts off the clitoris.

It appears that the Georgia legislature was attempting to outlaw female circumcision but didn't consider other things adult females do by choice.

cuts off the clitoris

along with the major and minor labia too.

It's a barbaric practice and very painful as it's usually not done under any anethesia.

Personally I don't consider a body piercing a "mutilation".

I was thinking the same thing Bunni. Or what about plastic surgery? That's mutilation isn't it?

How are they going to find out if someone violates this new law. Kinda sheds new light on the job title of FBI - Female Body Inspector.

It hasn't been signed into law yet and will surely be tested by courts...

For those crying for National Health Care... you better get ready for being told things like this, after all it will be the Government paying for any illness or disease contracted from these "peircings" and other things...
