I was recently diagnosed with Celiac Disease and have to stay on a gluten-free diet for life. I was wondering if anyone else on the board is on this diet and if so, how do you get past the taste of gluten-free food? I paid $5 for a loaf of bread that is so heavy I could use it as a door stop, the pasta smells like motor oil and the cereal is like chewing on a cardboard box. There has to be a place out there that sells gluten-free items that are edible. I would think someone could develop a pill that would assist the body in processing the protein in wheat, rye, oats and barley. Well, there goes the cookies, cakes and pies I love to eat.

Cheryl,

I don't know anything about celiac disease. But, when I was diagnosed with diabetes the most helpful advice that I recieved was from a hospital affiliated dietitian. In my case, I had to gain weight. So, you might consider checking with a local hospital to see if classes or dietitians are available. Whatever the cost, it's worthwhile.

Cheryl: I have hemochromatosis (iron overload), under control now so I just have to get checked every 3 months and have a pint or two of blood taken.

We have a site on Yahoo (and I think there's a CD site on Yahoo, too), in which we Hereditary Hemo. people talk to each other--vigorously, daily. Hints about which foods to avoid, how to beat some sense in our doctors, etc.

I've been struck by how many HH people also have celiac disease. It seems to come with the territory in many many cases.

Have you ever had your ferritin levels checked? This is a non-routine blood test with no relationship to hematocrits or any of the other routine tests drs. do.

HH'ers may present with arthritic-type pains, or liver problems, or diabetes, or red face, and a host of others. MOstly it's silent.

Just some thoughts here.

And for CD info, check Yahoo's groups. ~Adele

We have several people at the home on gluten free diets. I will check with our dietician this week and get back to you with any helpful information I can come up with.

Your right about the bread: it is so solid that you'd think they used lead to make it. Smells nasty as well.

In Christ,
Rick

Mark 16

"I am trying here to prevent anyone saying the really foolish thing that people often say about Him: "I'm ready to accept Jesus as a great moral teacher, but I do not accept His claim to be God." That is one thing we must not say. A man who was merely a man and said the sort of things Jesus said would not be a great moral teacher. He would either be a lunatic....or else he would be the devil of Hell. You must make your choice. Either this man was, and is, the Son of God: or else a madman or something worse. You can shut Him up for a fool, you can spit at Him and kill Him as a demon; or you can fall at His feet and call Him Lord and God. But let us not come with any patronizing nonsense about His being a great human teacher. He has not left that open to us. He did not intend to."

I have been to that site. I went to our local health food store to get the food, but wasn't aware it could be so nasty! I adhered to the diet today despite the fact that I was tempted with many Easter goodies. The price I pay for eating the stuff is too high.

I have had my ferritin levels checked. I'll ask my doc about that. I had a hard time getting him to check me for CD. At first it was diagnosed as Irritable Bowel Syndrome. CD is commonly mistaken for IBS. However, I insisted on the other test. Seems I had almost every one of the symptoms for it - irritability, weight loss, sudden cramping in the legs and feet, rapid heartbeat, headaches, fatigue, etc. I knew it was more than IBS.

Thank you for your offer. I will wait on hearing from you. I'm also going to talk to a holistic practitioner that I know to see if there is something I can take that will allow my body to tolerate the proteins in gluten products. I never realized how much I like bread until it was taken away. If you'd prefer, you can email me at [email protected].

Thanks again, everyone. I hope you are all enjoying your holiday!
