Let me preface my comments today with the following:
I believe in a vibrant multi-party political system.
I believe in healthy competition between adversarial political organizations.
I believe in free and open and uninhibited debate in the political process.
I should also point out that I have no horse in the presidential race of 2004. I didn't vote for either George W. Bush or Al Gore in 2000, and I don't plan on voting for the president or his Democratic Party opponent next year.
So, I can be quite objective in my observations about what's happening in the presidential campaign thus far – much more objective, I might add, than most political observers who, like it or not, have their own partisan biases and axes to grind.
With all that out of the way, let me lay it on the line:
The Democrats are playing a deceitful dangerous game bordering on treason.
There, I said it.
What am I talking about?
Let me get very specific. Back in January of this year,
WorldNetDaily reported on the Democrats' plan to undermine public confidence in President Bush by questioning his credibility and raising doubts about the direction of the country – even while U.S. troops are fighting on two fronts in the war on terrorism.
Because the report was based on a Democratic talking-points memo devised in 2002 and obtained by another news agency, I didn't think too much more about it until recently.
Nine months later, the misbegotten baby that was conceived in that memo has been born for all of us to see.
What the Democrats envisioned back then was an attack plan claiming:
the war against Iraq is being fought over oil and for oil companies loyal to Bush and Republicans;
the administration "manufactured" evidence against Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein to convince Britain and other allies to join the war;
a wartime economy is the only way the White House can boost a sagging economic picture.
"It is clear that the current approval ratings of the administration are tied directly to strong American feelings toward traditional values," the memo said. "To counter this, doubt must be raised as to America's true position within the world community and the true intent of the Bush administration in waging war."
All of this really hit home yesterday as the big story in the establishment press was something I consider to be a non-story.
I'm talking about the alleged administration "leak" that reportedly exposed the identity of a Central Intelligence Agency operative.
It appears the Democrats will attempt to turn this into a scandal the way they turned 16 words in the State of the Union Address into one – with partisan media sleight of hand. Read Cliff May's definitive explanation of this tempest in a teapot.
The Democrats, because they have so many loyal allies in the establishment press, are able and willing to create so-called scandals where none exist. They are able to spin news where none exists. They are able to deflect the nation's attention from real stories and real news.
What the Democrats are doing is not in the best interests of this country.
What the Democrats are doing is not what should be expected from a loyal opposition party.
What the Democrats are doing is exactly what they accuse others of doing – practicing "the politics of personal destruction" while claiming to be sticking to policy matters.
Worse, this is happening at a time when the U.S. is battling terrorists in a worldwide conflict – one we are waging in direct response to the most devastating attack ever launched by foreigners on these shores.
This was all planned beforehand.
The Democrats seem more than willing to compromise our national security interests if it serves the purpose of empowering them.
The Democrats seem more than willing to compromise the safety and morale of our troops in the field if it serves the purpose of empowering them.
The Democrats seem more than willing to lie, cheat and steal if it serves the purpose of empowering them.

Oh, please. By this reasoning Bush is himself guilty of treason. Because it is his own actions and words that cause doubts about him and his policies to spread. ANd I guess that a growing number of Republicans are also guilty of treason because they are voicing doubts, too.

I think the guy that wrote the article must have known that Bush was a dolt and would screw up everything so he was trying to steal the thunder of Bush's stupid future actions.
