With all the debate going on between Kerry's tour in Vietnam and Bush's tour in the National Guard, how important is it you for the President to have a military background?

After all the President is the Commander in Chief, what kind of example does it set if the Commander in Chief has never served in the military?

Does being in the National Guard count as much as being a front line soldier? Does being a cook or medic in one of the armed forces count as much as being a front line soldier?

Frankly, I think the President of the United States should have served in the military if he has the final say on issues dealing with war.

Previous service IS NOT a pre-requisite of the position of President [according to our Constitution]

Here's a list of our current and past Presidents and it shows if they served, what branch they served in.

Thanks for the link Linda.

I never said it was. It is my belief that the President should have served in the military if he is going to be comander in chief.

I was surprised FDR did not serve in the military.

I was surprised FDR did not serve in the military.

He was too young for the Spanish-American War (16) and too old for WWI (in his 30's). Then he contracted polio in 1921, at age 39.

that don't get to carry a weapon.

AIN'T LIFE GRAND...

It's too bad that their blindness can't see they are killing more soldiers than President Bush ever has... Protest Loud and Proud! Your fellow taliban and insurgents are rejoicing at the support...
