Need help. I'm a computer "unsavvy" person. Manage to get around eBay of course and this place, but know absolutely nothing else. Hate to admit it but that's the story. We have this computer left to us by our son and it's older than some of you out there I think. It's giving me hives with all the trouble I'm having getting kicked off or even getting connected. AOL says I need more memory etc, etc. I can't argue, I know this thing is totally outdated. I'd like to know if there are any special things I should do before switching over when I do get the new one (hopefully today). Will I be able to keep all the Vendio stuff and listings that are already running? Can I keep same screen names, etc? I know it's asking a lot but any advice offered in "dummy" speak would be appreciated. THANKS in Advance!!

Save all information you think is valuable to disk or cd... your items here at vendio should not be affected only items stored on your present computer.
That is if you are going for a new one... if just adding more ram, nothing will or should say nothing should change or be lost.
What Operating system (Windows 95, 98. 2000?) are you using and how much ram do you have?

If you are getting a new computer, chances are you will have XP. I love it. You can have XP save all your files to a CD and transfer them to a new computer. For now what you can do is get a computer to computer cable and transfer your files directly to your new computer. That's what I did when I went from 98 to XP. It was a snap. I do suggest you do as twelve suggests first. Back up any important files you have. Anything can happen during a file transfer. You can get the cable at Best Buy or any computer store and one of their sales people should be able to give you quick how-to's.

Maybe you need to erase some of the programs that you son had on the computer. The music downloads take a lot of space. But I can't tell you how to do it. Get rid of all the programs that you don't need and I bet you pick up a lot of memory.

Libra, that would increase Hard drive space, but unless she has changed the amount of hard drive space used for cache... it probably would not help.
Only if her hard drive was full or almost full would this come into play.

Twelvepole, sorry for the delay. I have Windows 98 and AOL 7. The icons for AOL 4 and 5 are still on the home screen. I asked if I should remove those versions and could they tell me how and they responded that removing them wouldn't make any significant difference.
As I said in 1st post, I'm not computer savvy at all. I don't know the ram. Was able to find this other info if it sheds any light. I only know how to get into systems info screen because I have to constantly clear the cache. Info in there is: Memory 64MB total (100% load), system resources 59% free. Disk drive C: free space 4144MB total space 6137MB.
The utilities tab on this screen takes me to the browser cache with a max cache size 49419KB. Almost as soon as I have turned it on I'm into 89,000KB or something close to that. I have to clear it a lot back to zero.
Does any of this limited knowledge shed any light??? Thanks so much. NOTE: I might not be able to respond quickly since I get kicked off so much and have trouble getting back in.

Uninstall every AOL version you have then just reinstall version 7
Try that to see if one of the others is interfering, your system should be ok to run that version.

if you do buy a new PC.. I dont think you need to worry about saving any files etc. if you're only concern with vendio files (cuz those are stored on the vendio server no?) and your AOL screen name is also saved on the AOL server. u'll just have to setup your log-in information again thats all.
if you have any needed files or programs on your computer, u might have to save thsoe onto a CD or disk, but seeing as how you only have 64MB of RAM, you probably dont have a CD burner.
so space is limited to save on disk (although u can use lots of them. but thats a hassle)
and using any computer to computer network plug or any other plugs might be a bit complicated for you to setup, and wouldn't necessary be Plug and Play for such an old computer.
what I suggest is to take it to a place to have them transfer the necesssary files for you. it might cost but shouldn't cost too much (if they want more than 50 bucks shop around some more) or ask if the place where u would buy your PC could do it for you for cheap or free.
if you can, right click on My Computers > Properties and read off what it says on the bottom right in the General Tabs menu screen.
(Where System: Microsoft Windows 98 is listed)
Right below registered to: blah blah should show what system you have.
It'll either be AuthenticAMD or GeniuneIntel etc. or something along that lines.
just so I know what kinda system you're running. also knowing if its a brand name (+ model number) or just a generic one would help too, I can give u some advice on upgrades or a new system.
I wouldn't spend over $500 for a new system, for what you'll be using the computer for. if you happen to go to place that sells PC, dont let them push you for something that you dont need. for complete systems i'll recommend Dell. prices are fair and even their cheapest offering should be a thousand times faster than your system (its ridiculous how fast computer gets over time)
