If you were given a magic wand, and the chance to use it only once, what would you do with it?

A. Put an end to gay marriage forever, OR

B. Put an end to the child molestation in the church.

I would choose B, to stop the child molestation in the church. These children are victims, and most often have long lasting emotional damage. As opposed to a couple that wants to show their love to each other in the form of a lifetime commitment in marriage.

spelling edit.

Yeager,

Is all of the child molestation that goes on outside of the church ok with you?

Homosexuality is about sex.

Child molestation is about power.

There is a third option to consider. Use your magic wand to eliminate the structure of organized religion that makes child molestation so easy and available for pedophiles... and by doing so you will also alleviate the religious political corruption which spreads the concept that gay marriage is biblically wrong.

I never thought of that Helen. That might be the best option.

neroter, everyone has an agenda. The fact of the matter is that some of the agenda items are used to prevent others from reaching their goals.

neroter, cherishedclutter, That wasn't the question. The question was about the elimination of one of these issues. Are you afraid to make a committed answer to the question?

twiq, You are very right about child molestation being about power. It's about having power over a person who is powerless to defend themselves against an authority figure.

Why not a third option where you simply eliminate all perverts?

That takes care of BOTH A&B ?

Great answer Helen!!

Yeager, even though they are lumped together, I don't believe child molesting and pedophilia are the same thing, as with the priests. I don't believe pedophilia is a power trip but more of a person's brain being stuck at a certain age of sexual maturity. Especially in the church, where the thought of sex period makes everyone wince, that much needed sexual maturing is even further stifled, providing a breeding ground for sexual misconduct. Telling people to forget about their sexuality is like telling a person not to eat. If someone told me that, the only thing I would think about is food. My stomach would continue to growl and I'd probably sneak off somewhere to find a snack. Bottom line is I wouldn't be able to control my hunger for long. Neither can these priests, through no fault of their own, imo. What's worse, is I think this has been going on since organized religion began. It's a breeding ground for hyprocrisy which not many people will turn away from because God live inside. What God would want all this?

kraft,

I think you are right on track. I was watching a news magazine show, I don't recall which one, 60 minutes or 20/20. The show was discussing the issue of child molestation in the church. One of the priest said, about the seminary. "what would you expect? You take a bunch of teen-aged boys and young men and put them together and then tell them they should never have sex with a woman".
