Remember hitching for a ride? Here is a neat article on how "thumb rides" have become a thing of the past.

I once hitched from my home in New Hampshire all the way to Colorado. Does anyone have any good hitch hikeing stories?

In Christ,
Rick

Genesis 1:1

"I am trying here to prevent anyone saying the really foolish thing that people often say about Him: "I'm ready to accept Jesus as a great moral teacher, but I do not accept His claim to be God." That is one thing we must not say. A man who was merely a man and said the sort of things Jesus said would not be a great moral teacher. He would either be a lunatic....or else he would be the devil of Hell. You must make your choice. Either this man was, and is, the Son of God: or else a madman or something worse. You can shut Him up for a fool, you can spit at Him and kill Him as a demon; or you can fall at His feet and call Him Lord and God. But let us not come with any patronizing nonsense about His being a great human teacher. He has not left that open to us. He did not intend to."

In the late 60's to early 70's I hitched cross country many times. NY to CA, CA to Colorado, Colorado to New Mexico, New Mexico to California, California to Oregon. Probably logged a total of 100,000 miles. Met some interesting people, truck drivers, teachers, salesman and 100's of others. never had any problems, always had a great time. My record for getting stuck in one spot was Needles California 12 hours followed by Kingman Az for 8 hours.

Longest ride was Albuquruque NM to Daly City CA and Salt Lake City to San Francisco.

I used to hitchhike all the time. I too made an east coast to Coloroado and back hitchhiking trip. I lucked out early in both trip and rode with long haul truckers who have got to be the best friend a hitcher can have. When one was going in a different direction or stoppong for the night they would get on the CB and round out the next ride. I had a great time and met some great people and only once in many years of hitching around town and occasiionally out of town did I have a problem and that one I got out with simply the opening of a door.

If it's really "common" sense, why do so few people actually have it?

When I was young and our High Schhol band travled we stayed in distant places from where we were to perform so in order to get where we wanted we hitched rides. It was a great time, no fear as the world was a much friendlier place. Now we have to keep our car doors locked and let no one in for fear they will rob us, kill us and take our car.

First time I hear "The Tiger Sleeps Tonight" We were hitching a ride in Northfield Minnesota.

Hitchin' A Ride
By: Vanity Fare
(Peter Callender - Mitch Murray)
1970

A thumb goes up, a car goes by
It's nearly 1 a.m. and here am I
Hitchin' a ride, hitchin' a ride
Gotta get me home by the morning light
I got no fare to ride a train
I'm nearly drowin' in the pouring rain
Hitchin' a ride, hitchin' a ride
Gotta get me home to my baby's side
Ride, ride, ride, hitchin' a ride
Ride, ride, ride, hitchin' a ride

Long distance call I got today
She sounded lonely so I'm on my way
Hitchin' a ride, hitchin' a ride
Gotta get me home, keep her satisfied
Ride, ride, ride, hitchin' a ride
Ride, ride, ride, hitchin' a ride

A thumb goes up, a car goes by
Oh, won't somebody stop and help a guy?
Hitchin' a ride, hitchin' a ride
Been away too long from my baby's side
Ride, ride, ride, hitchin' a ride
Ride, ride, ride, hitchin' a ride

(Ride, ride -- Ride, ride -- Ride, ride -- Ride, ride -- Ride, ride)

I remember my Grandmother telling us that my father, while stationed in Virginia, used to hitchhike at least once a month to their farm in northern PA.

This was in the 1950's....doubt it would be safe to nowadays.

For every "fun" story about hitching rides, there are just as many horror stories. I used to do it until I had to fight off two potential rapists. Then again, a single girl should never get into a car with two males!

".... just as many horror stories." Bull.

I and everyone I knew in the 60's traveled all over the Northeast and later, the nation, on our thumbs- and noone I knew ever had a problem of any magnitude. Before I had a car, when it wasn't running or when I was broke the thumb always got me where I needed to go without mishap.

Couldn't do it today- the cops would be on you like white on rice and our nation of terrified little weenies wouldn't pick you up - but at the time it worked great.

When I was 15 I had a boyfriend who would hitch 25 miles every weekend to see me. Unfortunately, I also had a girlfriend who was hitching one night in our little town and was picked up by a stranger. She was murdered. It's sad when someone with whom you grew up with is suddenly and violently taken out of your life. The murderer walked free because there wasn't enough forensic evidence to convict him (this was 25 years ago). I used to hitch to go see my friends, but after my friend's murder, I never did again.
