Wal Mart has been trying to get a strong hold on Oregon retail, but have been quite unsuccessful. Though they do have a handful of stores in Oregon, the heat is rising on their small town tactics and Oregonians don't want them around. Amazingly, the city of Portland with over 1 million residents has one Wal Mart, and only a few suburban cities that surround Portland have a Wal Mart. Once again, this shows how progressive Oregon is in realizing how bad Wal Mart is for a small town economy. I remember living in Florida and seeing a Wal Mart along tons of freeway exits. I am glad to see our great state of Oregon standing up to the heavy hitting corporate swine.

Here is the article:

Oregon Court of Appeals rules against Wal-Mart

07/12/2004

Associated Press

The Oregon Court of Appeals has denied Wal-Mart plans to build a store in Hillsboro after the world's largest retail chain argued the city changed its rules in order to block the store.

It was the third time the Wal-Mart proposal has been rejected.

The state Land Use Board of Appeals rejected the plan in April after the City Council rejected it unanimously last August.

"We are disappointed with the decision," said Wal-Mart spokesman Eric Berger. "Clearly it's a difference of opinion. We believe we exceeded the standards based on the requirements set by the city."

Berger said Wal-Mart has not decided whether it will appeal to the Oregon Supreme Court.

For city leaders, the ruling by a three-judge panel of the Oregon Court of Appeals reaffirms their vote last year to deny Wal-Mart's proposal.

"We have the authority to do what we did," Mayor Tom Hughes said. "It isn't even worthy of making case law, so I'd be surprised if it makes it to the Supreme Court. It seems like a lost cause."

The city's objections centered on traffic and whether the store would blend in a residential area.

Wal-Mart has faced opposition from other cities across Oregon.

In Oregon City, city commissioners last week rejected a request for the second time. Wal-Mart also has lost decisions on proposals in Medford, Hood River and Central Point. Each of those decisions is being appealed to the land use board.

Yes we have to stop Walmart's extremist agenda before it is to late. Walmart has ruined society and is poisoning our children.

The Latimes published an excellent three part investigation of Wal-Mart about six months ago. After reading how employees and competition are mistreated and unethically exploited nobody should want to shop in Walmart. Good for Oregon!
