Since Linda_K's original post about S.S. got so screwed up I thought a new post on this subject would make it better for all to read and comment on.
My reply, Linda_K, is trying to say this republican government that is SOOOOOO very much for the rich, is trying to make a better retirement plan for the middle and working class people? If you guys and gals believe that I have a bridge in Brooklyn to sell. Watch out for middle of the night amendments!

Hi Bigpeepa...
I most always agree with your posts.. your common sense and plain speaking truth..
Please explain to me what it is that you do not trust with this new proposal? Thanks Maggie

Hi Maggie, I see nothing wrong with the S.S. plan that Linda_K posted. My problem is the Bush government talks the talk but doesn't walk the walk. Bush reaches out to the middle and working class by saying what they want to hear but somehow doesn't follow up on his promises.
My second worry is I don't believe the bill will get passed as proposed in linda_K's post. I worry about last minute or late night amendments. Republicans are famous for making a bill look good to the middle and working class to get their votes. Then the same bill gets amended several times and becomes law not looking anything like it started out. I do feel the people running Bush talk to the middle and working class but in reality do very little for them.
This kind of republican talk reminds me of the famous Bush tax cut for all Americans. Yes, the middle class and working class did get tax cuts ranging for a few bucks to couple thousand while the rich got tax cuts of tens of thousands to hundreds of thousands of dollars. Any tax cut I got is long gone because of higher state taxes, health costs, gas, food, insurance costs ect. I could go on but I think you get my drift and I want to take a nap before working a little more. I just remember what the Native Americans said about the promises the goverment made to them "white man speaks with forked toung." I feel the same way about anything the Bush government says I have a problem believing people that only work to make the rich richer.

Thank you Bigpeepa.. you have a way of cutting through all the BS and getting to the point..
As a "Middle Class American".. I feel like we are being hit the hardest these days. Life in the "Middle" sure isn't what it once was...
This country needs to radically rethink our national priorities... The middle class is the backbone of America and it cannot be allowed to disintegrate.
We need to revitalize American democracy, and create a political climate where government makes decisions which reflect the needs of all the people, and not just wealthy campaign contributors. We need to see the middle class expand, not collapse.
If you read my response to Linda's original post, you will see points similar to those made by bigpeepa. The government will determine who will handle your funds. The money made from the sale of the funds will go to the corporations. On and on. It's long so I won't re-post it here.

Cheryl...I am sorry.. I did miss your post.
But I have read it now and I thank you for going into depth in replying with very valid arguments to this proposal.
On face value, it seems like a good plan.. but like you said... it is based on trust...something that I have very little of these days..
The posters on this board have a wide diversity of opinions and it is always helpful to see things from a different perspective.. after all, if we are not completely shut down or have extreme tunnel vision..we can learn from others. Thanks again.. (a gentler and kinder) Maggie

You're welcome, Maggie. I used to work for a bank and there was much discussion about this when it was first proposed. I also worked for some of the unions and there was discussion there as well. So, I've really seen both sides of it and one side is definitely uglier than the other! I can imagine the investment firms licking their chops all trying to get the government contract on this one. Hmmm, wonder if Haliburton has an investment division. LOL!

Maggie & Cheryl, You both have warm hearts and good minds. Being an old Irishman I can say "KEEP THE FAITH" and this time I am not talking about a religious faith.
A quick true story about what I call a good working middle class man.
My 73 year old Italian barber and friend by the name of Louie. Louie still cuts hair everyday from 10am to 3pm and only charges $6.00 for a hair cut. One day I say to Louie hey man don't you think you need to raise your prices, after all every other barber charges a lot more. Louis says "as long as I have enough money to live on I am happy. I am 73 what am I going to do take extra money with me. ha ha" he goes on to say. "I worry about my customers, many have become my friends through the years. Some are retired and don't have a lot of money and the younger ones are raising kids so they don't have a lot of money either." End of story.
I suppose some would call Louie a chump for not charging what he could get. I call Louie a friend and a very good man. I am betting you both know how Louie votes.
