I was sitting here wondering what the people of Iraq think now that they have so-called freedom and democracy brought to them by the US. What do they think when they view the US as an example at election time?

Does all the back stabbing and months and months of BS leading up to the choice of a leader set a good example of how they want to see their country's future and how they want to see their people act?

Let's not forget all the corporate greed and how it's a dog eat dog world out there. Haliburton is a good example of a company working right within their country. I truly wonder how they view all of this and if they are eagerly waiting to be a democracy just like the USA.

This is how they feel.

"I want to defend my home. If a stranger invades America and the people resist, does that mean they are terrorists?" Manajid says. "Everyone [in Fallujah] has been labeled a terrorist. These are all lies. Fallujah people are some of the best people in Iraq."

Penalty Kicks
Why is Manajid so upset? Well, it's simple enough: He's from Fallujah, where U.S. forces have launched many attacks, one of which killed his cousin Omar. It's an understandable sentiment: To be sure, Omar was killed because he joined the insurgency; nevertheless, if someone killed my cousin, I'd be pretty upset about it. And the late Omar Jabbar al-Aziz doubtless had more family members than the one anti-American midfielder. Other cousins, perhaps, along with some siblings and in-laws. Children, maybe, or parents who are still alive. Nephews, uncles, and nieces. Certainly he had friends. And none of those people is going to be very happy that he was killed. Nor will those who were merely injured by U.S. attacks feel very warm and fuzzy about the red, white, and blue. Nor will their friends and family. Nor those who've had their homes destroyed, or merely damaged. More than a year of sporadic fighting, bombing, and shelling has a way of making a lot of people mad. And when a lot of people get mad at you, some of them decide to get even.

I want to see how Iraq is 5 years from now, ten years from now. I wonder what they will do with their new found freedom and democracy. Will it last or will they fall back to their old ways after the U.S. pulls out?

after the U.S. pulls out?

Unfortunately I think it will take many many years before one can pull out of there. If we can't even control a small country like this there's not much hope for the entire middle east.

Interesting read, Helen. I still blame that idiot Rumsfeld for the entire security failure as he had no clue what he was doing and didn't listen to his key people.

I'm sure Saddam's supporters and Islamic radicals hate it. The returning troops are saying only about 5% of Iraqis are troublemakers and they say that the media is not reporting the whole story. The vast majority of Iraqis want freedom and democracy. With 22 million Iraqis, they could easily kick out US troops. The Iraqi government is sovereign and President Bush has said that we'd leave if asked.

But don't worry kiara. If Iraqis want to go back to the bad old days, they can always vote for another ruthless dictator like Saddam or a religious tyrant.

OR Canada could send their own troops into Iraq.

EAG, I understand that the majority of people in Iraq don't want the US to leave because they need them there now.

From Helen's second link:

Still, killing people does no good if the only result is to increase the number of people fighting against you, and that's exactly what's happening right now. As the most recent edition of the Brookings Institution'sIraq Index revealed, despite killing or detaining thousands of insurgents between April and July, the number of fighters arrayed against us has quadrupled rather than gone down. We can sustain this pace of "progress" -- stay the course, as the president likes to say -- for quite awhile, but doing so will accomplish nothing. It's too bad that Kerry doesn't have a simple five-point plan that will resolve the situation easily, but if there were an obvious way to get from where we are now to where we want to be, he wouldn't have been opposed to many of the missteps that have landed us in the current mess.

EAG, I think you missed my point about the US setting a good example for freedom and democracy unless you're proud of the way this war has gone and think it sets a good example for future conquests.

Ya, kiara, maybe some more Canadians forces want to be "accidently" killed by American soldiers high on speed.

Remember that?

But I don't really know why Canada would want to send troops to Iraq....Canadians didn't start a war. And the last I heard the U.S. isn't really the Supreme Ruling Nation despite what King George, or the neonazicon on this board, thinks.

Yes crowfarm, I remember that little speed "accident"..... someone I know was there when it happened.

I also remember when a poster here on Vendio thought it was highly amusing.

Well , there's not so many neonazicons here that I can't guess who it was.

I would guess maybe the one who thinks torturing children is fun.

It has been said that the speed pills are a necessity for combat pilots. If they refuse to take them they don't fly. It can blur their judgement on occasion though.

If you think that cf, then it will only add to all the other times your statements/guess have been so far off base as to be laughable.

Kiara didn't mention my name...and wouldn't...because she'd be lying if she did. It's all just part of her little 'game' playing.

taken from a C. Powell speech 8-16-04 in regards to Iraq and their setting up a voting system:

"Iraq must defeat the insurgency and "get on with the business of reconstruction," he said, so that they can have a "solid, peaceful, democratic foundation."

Powell said the U.S. Ambassador to Iraq, John D. Negroponte, described the three-day National Conference meetings which commenced in Baghdad August 15, in a telephone conversation as follows: "There was a lot of squabbling, there was a lot of noise, there was a lot of debate and there was a lot of disagreement. Colin, it's called democracy -- and it was wonderful."

"And they want a country that is free. They want free elections. They want to be represented by their own leaders. They want their armed forces. And we're going to help them get all of that and it will be a success," Powell said Negroponte told him.

What is your problem, Linda_K? What games? I didn't even respond to your Canada comment up above. I didn't mention anyone's name either but no, it wasn't you. I wasn't aware that you enjoyed torturing children so why would I associate crowfarm's remark with you?
