All the posts here of late has got me thinking,...do people ever change? Their thinking, they ways, etc? Does society?
Seems to me there is some growth, but we never really notice it in its process. It appears the envelope gets pushed past what was once deemed unacceptable from decade to decade as well.

If so, then why are we always pointing back in time, as if things or people dont ever change?? Some say things dont change much. Maybe they really dont.

What do you think?

People can change their beliefs on many things like politics and religion or how they view others because of life experiences or aging, because of the influence of others or because of the way the world changes around them.

Basic personalities don't seem to change too much, for example I think if you're lighthearted and easy-going when you're younger you will more than likely stay that way. I notice some people seem to turn more bitter as they age but when I think about it, these are the people that seem to remain very rigid in their beliefs and are the least accepting of change.

As far as society, the envelope gets pushed backwards and forwards. In fact I was reading on Yahoo Canada this morning about a copper statue of a soldier in NY that's over 100 yrs old and it was taken down and it's crotch has been downsized. Who decided that needed to be changed and why?

When it comes to getting along with others it never changes. Look at the world, there is always war. Sometimes families or neighbors are in constant battle. Look at almost any forum on the net where different personalities gather.

BTW, good topic, neroter12.

It would be nice to think some do, but to quote my grandmother..."You can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear."

I believe people can and do change. How many of us are the same as when we were in high school? Thankfully, not too many of us. Who wants to be a 50 year old hippy? I've seen people with docile personalities in high school become agressive adults due in part to life events. My grandfather, a rather rigid and bigoted man in his younger years, was soft, caring and rather liberal (considering he was a rigid conservative most of his life) at the time of his death.

If people never changed, society would never change. I think we all change like the seasons. I won't tell anyone what season I'm in right now, but it isn't Spring. LOL!

Kraft...

I agree cheryl, people change everyday... even I have mellowed out over the years... and some things I used to support I no longer do and vice versa...

Not all change is good... some things should be left alone and not tinkered with.

Libra, really?

twelve, you have mellowed out a little? WoW!!!

I think that people do change for many of the reasons that kiara has mentioned. I used to be somewhat intolerant of people that were unlike me. Now, I realize that everyone is different and everyone has a right to exist.

I think that society changes slowly, but does change. I think that when an older generation dies off, so does their beliefs, both good and bad. An example would be interracial marriage. Thirty years ago, when people saw an mixed couple they stared at them. Now, nobody pays any attention to that.

...Thats pretty funny. Somebody must have thought it buldged out too much or something?!! lol.

I have seen people soften or harden with age. Depending on what life has thrown them and their original disposition.

Maggie, I do think life is a circle too. But consider too, that many things that were never deemed acceptable now are. I think if people really WANT to change they can, but I dont think change is ever comfortable - and we are creatures of our habits more than we ever realize.

Twelve -

Actually Twelve, you're a good example of how a person can change. I know this is hard to believe everyone, but Twelve used to be a dink.
