Here's the definition I posted the other day:
What is an Internet Troll?
An "Internet troll" or "Forum Troll" is a person who posts
outrageous messages to bait people to answer. Forum Troll delights in
sowing discord on the forums. A troll is someone who inspires
flaming rhetoric, someone who is purposely provoking and pulling
people into flaming discussion. Flaming discussions usually end
with name calling and a flame war.
A classic troll is trying to make us believe that he is a
skeptic. He is divisive and argumentative with need-to-be-right
attitude, "searching for the truth", flaming discussion, and
sometimes insulting people or provoking people to insult him. Troll
is usually an expert in reusing the same words of its opponents and
in turning it against them.
While he tries to present himself as a skeptic looking for truth ...
his messages usually sound as if it is the responsibility of other
forum members to provide evidence that what forum is all about is
legitimate science.
Sometimes, Internet troll is trying to spin conflicting information,
is questioning in an insincere manner, flaming discussion, insulting
people, turning people against each other, harassing forum members,
ignoring warnings from forum moderators.
Trolling is a form of harassment that can take over a discussion.
Well meaning defenders can create chaos by responding to trolls. The
best response is to ignore it. Negative emotions stirred up by trolls leak over into
other discussions. Normally affable people can become bitter after
reading an angry interchange between a troll and his victims, and
this can poison previously friendly interactions between long-time
users.
[NOW, PAY CLOSE ATTENTION TO THIS:]
Finally, trolls create a paranoid environment, such that a casual
criticism by a new arrival can elicit a ferocious and inappropriate
backlash.
When trolls are ignored they step up their attacks, desperately
seeking the attention they crave. Their messages become more and
more foul, and they post ever more of them. Alternatively, they may
protest that their right to free speech is being curtailed. Some
trolls do have a creative spark and have chosen to squander it on
being disruptive. There is a certain perverse pleasure in watching
some of them. Ultimately, though, the webmaster has to decide if the
troll actually cares about putting on a good show for the regular
participants, or is simply playing to an audience of one -- himself.
Next time you are on a message board and you see a post by somebody
who you think is a troll, and you feel you must reply, simply write
a follow-up message entitled "Troll Alert" and type only this:
The only way to deal with trolls is to limit your reaction and not
to respond to rolling messages. It is well known that most people
don't read messages that nobody responds to, while 99% of forum
visitors first read the longest and the largest threads with the
most answers.
Troll Message is an outrageous message posted to a message board,
newsgroup or mailing list to bait people to answer.

Twelvepole: I post articles and quotes I find interesting, from my Democratic perspective, and I assume some won't like them, some will. I don't know how that's different from what everyone here who posts political threads does.
I don't know if you've noticed, but I've gone out of my way not to get hooked into (baited into) the sort of ugly back-and-forth I see so often here.
I don't intend to let it happen now, either. Whatever you say further to me in this thread isn't going to be answered, because I don't like p---ing matches.

Ya, Libra and some others, start threads hoping no one will respond which, of course, is the purpose of a chat room....to have no one respond.......my, my what short threads we'd have.
Pricklane decides who's a troll and who isn't ?
Sure, why not , nobody pays any attention to what he writes anyway.........
Ok now let's have a big long thread on who is and who isn't and the world will be a btter place.

12, I don't believe Roadsmith is a troll. Read the defination again. She posts what she thinks like others but very rarely if anytime does she keep it up. She doesn't follow people around or use offensive language. I don't feel she does bait and hook. JMHO
This is an interesting thread and when reading it, there are a few trolls in here

By the very definition of what SHE posted she is a troll... why else post this thread? If not to inflame?
Libra she got her ass kicked in the EO over this, now she brings it over here... Now she will slink back off to the EO and let everyone else post their inane diatribes here...

I was wondering why she reposted it here, myself. Especially since the first one was pulled? What is the point? Or to whom is the point, maybe is a better question? Would it be fairly safe to say many read both boards EO and this - even if they post to only one and not the other? Why, Adele, do you think this is important for us to read? We all know about trolls. And anybody who posts has probably been one, once or twice in some form of that definition.
..
ed to clarify my sentence.
\and spelling before the spelling bee queens ..hey, are they trolls?...hahahah...make an all day buffet over a MISSPELLED Word.

LaLa Libra says, "This is an interesting thread and when reading it, there are a few trolls in here "..
First: "there are a few trolls in here"
Libra ...SO WHAT!??????????
Second: And since , according to your sentence, they're only here when you're reading it....then don't read it!
Spelling Scorecard:
Crowfarm: 1
Neroter: 1,546,098

Crowfarm, you are the ultimate definition of a troll. Be proud!

The Real Trolls aren't the ones who bring up the argumentative, thought provoking posts, after all, that is what a chat board is for..
The Real Trolls are the sneaky people who come in and start pointing the finger and naming other board members by name and accusing them of being the Trolls.. throwing stones etc.. and then have the nerve to end their threads with a Bible Verse..
Then there are the grade school misfits, who never stopped being slimy snitches and instigators.. you know the ones that would go behind the backs of others and tell she said/he said..just to stir the sh!p! When caught this kind of troll.. whines and goes into poor pity me mode.. my spelling is picked on and people use bad language.. but it never stops them from jumping right back into it the next time and stirring the sh!p again and again.. sad pathetic creatures.. these are the Real Trolls

Helenjw- Good summary, Maggie.
Those who post here and then scurry off to EbayOutlook to make scurrilous remarks about the RoundTable are also trolls in my opinion.
Who are you talking about Helen, Maggie....
You said it Helen, You defined Maggie to a tee, Maggie is the ultimate troll of Vendio and was caught doing it.
If you had read that thread (Internet Troll) before it was pulled from the EO you would have seen responses unbecoming the round table from people that never come down here because of the antics of some posters.
First of all Maggie is the ultimate Troll with crowfarm following very close behind. Remember your words crowfarm this is a discussion board not a english class like you think it is. It is also not a place to call names like you do. Crowfarm is the one who starts a thread and when nobody responds bounces her own back up to the top and then when it doesn't get a response again bounces it back up. Now that maggie is back you can start your antics again because you have someone that backs you up.

Libra.. there you go again.. stir the sh!p, keep stirring.. it is the only way you can get any attention, isn't it.. I was suspended because of posting unrelated ebay topics on the EO board.. and because a certain Ship disturber turned me in.. you know the type that go snitching behind the backs of others... You my dear are the ultimate troll.. because you are always trying to make trouble for others.. so do me a favor old woman.. put me on your ignore list.. if you don't want to read my posts.. now go and whine and start your pity party again.. and write your notes to Vendio.. you sicken me. Not me. Why were you announcing that you have returned only to sprew your hatred again and again. It's obvious that you were asking for attention.
I am not the one who needs attention. Remember the threads.
I'M BAAACCCKK! DID YOU MISS ME?
So y'all be nice to me, so I can keep this redhead temper under control..ya hear! LOL
The next thread Cripes! Ivan has his eye on me!!!!
Now I know you would like to be queen of the Round Table but crowfarm has that locked up.

I agree, Kiara!
To answer a couple of posts here:
1. Neroter: I posted this originally because I found it on the Hemochromatosis (iron overload) site on Yahoo, which I subscribe to, having iron overload myself. Every once in a while someone in a Vendio thread asks what a "troll" is, and I thought it would be helpful. (I admit, also, that there was someone in the Ebay Outlook who frequently fit that definition, so the bad lady imp on my shoulder nagged me to post the thread there. Sorry.) I really don't feel that I was hounded off EO and HAD to bring it here, but a couple of folks suggested that I do so. (Most of us get along well on EO!) I also suspect that the whole thread was deleted only because there was some flaming going on.
2. Logansdad: Religious trolls! I'd never thought of it that way, but I think you're right. I've known some real-life religious trolls, in a sense, who were tiresome to visit with because one knew a "spiritual nudging" would come from them sooner or later. They were avoided whenever possible.
posted on September 17, 2004 10:25:12 AM new Who are you talking about Helen, Maggie....
No, Libra, I am NOT talking about Maggie. Don't twist my words to back up your agenda.
ED. to add...
I read Ebayoutlook for information about auctions. Occassionally I'm surprised by remarks made by regular Round Table posters denigrating this entire board as mean, nasty, snide, rude and a place designed to "bring out the wild animal". Why do you suppose people with this kind of opinion bother to come back? ...Since both boards are Vendio related I think that such two faced and hypocritical comments are simply inappropriate.
