This is Cleo my little Yorkie. I just found out today that they are going to have to operate on her knees.
Please send some positive energy (prayers or whatever) her way.
She is only five pounds and not the healthiest dog in the world by no means and I am really, really ,really worried about this.
Her poor little knees are slipping out of joints as she walks and she is in a lot of pain.
Right now she is sitting in her basket under the computer giving me the same look as in the photo, confused but eager to please.
She couldn't figure out why I was dressing her like a reindeer and putting her on white plush to try and create a snow scene for our christmas card when it was 80 degrees outside.

Thank you guys.
I have trouble looking at
her right now. She keeps staring into my eyes like she is looking for some answer.
Up to now I have been able to fix every thing for her. It just breaks my heart.

Tegan: Just think how much better she'll feel after the surgery! Think positive. My thoughts are with you.

On a serious note,Tegan: anesthesia. There are two types vets use. And darn it, I can't remember the names. One is *much* easier on the dog's system than the other but is much more expensive. Tell your vet you want *that* one! I lost my first shar-pei during surgery due to a reaction to the anesthetic (& *that's* when I found out Shar-peis are delicate when it comes to being put under). I learned that the more expensive anesthesia drug is better for older or more "delicate" dogs & since have insisted that the vet uses it any time one of my dogs has had to be operated on. It costs about $20-30 more, but believe me it is *worth* it!

bunnicula:
I will call the vet first thing in the morning and insist on the better anesthesia.
Thanks, I didn't even know there were two kinds.
Your right $30 weighed againest the loss of someone you love is a paltry sum. I'd clean out my bank account if I could just get her tail wagging again.

Tegan,

That is the cutest picture. I love Yorkies and I agree with Bunnicula, just keep thinking how much better she will feel after the surgery. Think of the spring in her new step.

She's a CUTIE!

Apparently the little "speck" dogs (as opposed to the "big honker" dogs) are prone to this sort of thing. Just last week I saw an Animal Planet vet program chronicling this surgery on a Chihuaua, I think, who was in horrible shape. Pooch was up and boinking around TWO DAYS after surgery.

I empathize with you. Keep us posted.

Tegan, I am a ReikiMaster, which is an energy worker you would compare to "healing hands". Cleo is surrounded by lots of good energy right now from a lot of people, I can feel it around her very strong. My prayers are with her, and you!

tegan...

Fear not! I had a wonderful Yorkie named Charlie who recently died at the age of 17. Several years ago he had the very operation your Cleo is about to get. He had it done one hind leg at a time, about 2 years apart. It's a form of dysplasia...and hereditary.

Anyway...both operations were very successful. No more pain for Charlie! The tricky part with him was keeping him from ripping out the stitches. AND, keeping him from jumping on and off the furniture. His problem was feeling TOO good...he wanted to get up to all his usual mischief right away. The vet frowned on that idea.

Be sure your vet gives you one of those Elizabethan collars so Cleo can't reach the stitches. Try to curtail her rambunctious urges - not so easy with my Charlie. Also...prepare yourself to view her naked legs...they look like chicken legs, I swear!

My vet also had me giving Charlie physical therapy so he would regain full range of motion. He liked to swim, so that was also good therapy later on when he was fully healed. Most Yorkies DON'T like swimming, so that may not be an option for you. I have another Yorkie named Phoebe who loathes water in all it's forms.

YOU may need tranquilizers, but I'm sure Cleo will be fine. Good luck...and please tell us how it goes!

Oops...I meant to ask you if your vet did a complete blood workup to determine how Cleo's system will withstand the anesthetic. Did she? I'm learning (late in life) to assume nothing.

toke..Thank you for your imput. I feel much better after hearing from someone who has been through this and had it all come out fine.
They have done a blood work up. I called after reading your post and they are going to use the safer anesthesia.
She is scheduled to go in for surgery at 10:00 on thursday.
They gave her some medication to help the inflamation but it hasn't seemed to have any effect to me. She is still acting odd and hiding under things. She doesn't want to go outside (she loves to go out)and she wants to be picked up a lot.(she hates to be picked up)
I know we are not supposed to give her table food but this baby is getting a Happy Meal
tonite and a new beanie baby.
Thanks everyone I can feel that positive energy building up already.

Hi, tegan...

Poor Cleo. An anti-inflammatory won't do much for her pain if the patella isn't where it belongs. Not much pleasure in going outside, if it hurts to move. You know, it's no wonder they feel terrific after the operation. Kind of like getting a bad tooth fixed. All of a sudden...the pain is gone!

It's odd. You would expect this dysplasia to be a gradual thing, but in Charlie's case, not so. Once his patella slipped out of it's groove...nothing would keep it in. Almost constant agony for him...had to have the surgery immediately. He didn't want to go out either, needless to say.

I can't believe I forgot to mention what a little cutie Cleo is...even with antlers, LOL!

All will be well...

Thanks for the good thoughts and kind words everyone I am getting her ready now to go in for surgery. She knows something is strange because she sat beside the tub for an hour last night waiting for her wednesday night bath that didn't happen and now she is sitting by her dish whinning because it is empty. (don't ask me how she knows when it is wednesday she just does)
I can't feed her until she gets back from surgery.
Times like this I am so glad I didn't have children. It is hard enough for me to let them cut on my little dog.
I will post the results when I get them.
Thanks everyone

tegan, my sister has yorkies , my dad has yorkies even my nephew has yorkies and I know they are dear little dogs. I will put the "blue seal of protection" on your little Cleo. That is what we use around here and it really seems to work!

My prayers are with you, I know how hard it is for mom at this time. Hope all is well.

Yipeeeeeeeeeee!!!
I just talked to the doctor and Cleo made it through. She is even well enough to go home today. I pick her up at 5:30.
The tech said she keeps waking up,looking at her shaved leg ,letting out a deep sigh of disgust and plopping her head back down.

I am so happy!!!!!!
I want to thank all of you who were pulling for her.I know your prayers and kind thoughts helped her through. Even the vet admitted after it was over that he was a little worried himself.

Thanks especially to Bunnicula : the doctor had to use the "other" kind of anesthesia because Cleo tested sensitive to the first kind.
Without your input I would not have known how important the blood test was and who knows how this would have turned out. I don't even want to think about it.

The only thing I was not happy about was the pain medication was on the extra's list.
The vet said some people don't feel it is neccesary for a dog. Those same people would really squawk if thier doctor sent them home from surgery without it.
Thank you all for helping me and Cleo through this.
It turned out to be a really good day.

tegan, This is great news! Glad your pup is doing so well. I think the reason they do not like to give pain meds to dogs [or cats] after surgery is because if they do not feel some pain they do not know enough to keep off the injury. After all you can't tell your dog to be careful! I have been through many surgeries with my dogs and I do not give very much pain med for that reason.

Good luck! I am sure she will heal quickly and be running around in no time at all.
