From a reader of a local newspaper.
"The Catholic Church is spending hundreds of thousands of dollars to promote the discriminatory proposal amendment to the Michigan Constitution. I have been giving $75 per week to the collection box, but I will no longer give them a dime when they sponsor basic laws that will discriminate against my gay son. This is the most un-Christian thing I can imagine."
Just becasue the christian right thinks what they believe in is correct, doesn't make it correct or legal.

yeager, I am Catholic but I don't like my church getting into politics. I also don't like politicians using religion to get votes. If any church wants to swing elections they should lose their tax exempt status.

By supporting his homosexual son, he is not providing christian values for his son to strive to... son made a bad choice... he should be having his son attend church and turn back that mistake.

I agree with you in that. Church is for seeking faith and not for electioneering. Also, I think that politician are only using the religious for votes. They try to align themselves with the religious right in hope of getting votes.

I think that you are right on that. He seems toooooo interested in me. He thinks that I'm gay and keeps pursuing me. He knows logan has a partner and seems to be leaving him alone.

Sorry, but I will have to check my bible first to see what I should do in this situation. I want to react in the proper way.
Also, this thread is about a father whois now refusing to give money to his church, not about you pursuing a guy for a date.

Yeager, twelve isn't too bright and from personal experience , when he doesn't really have anything to say or you make a fool of him he just repeats his posts...over and over again.
Seems to me HE'S the one who's afraid of homosexuals !
On a more important note ...my friend's father who is 73 just stopped attending church and donating money after receiving a letter from his bishop telling him how to vote! He had my friend, his daughter, write a scathing letter of denunciation to this unholy bishop.
In there quest to rule the world the religious freaks are going to lose a lot of PAYING cutomers.

Yes, nowadays unfortunately the membership is being directed in the voting booth. If I were you, I would send a copy of the letter to Americans Untied for the Separation of Church and State. This organization was formed in 1947, so it's not some new radical group. The link is located in my sig line. They might be interested in that letter. Here is a link to their online complaint form. Here is a paragraph outlining the concerns.
Houses of worship and religious leaders may address political and social issues, but federal tax law bars most non-profit groups from endorsing or opposing candidates for public office. Churches, temples and mosques must refrain from outright electioneering. It is not the job of religious leaders to tell people which candidates to vote for or not vote for.

Thank you Yeager, I wil tell my friend about this. Her letter was so well written that I wanted her to send it to the newspaper especially since they're doing a seven piece series on this topic.
