The federal government spends most of its budget on just a few programs. In 2001, social security, defense, Medicare, Medicaid, and interest payments on the national debt accounted for three-quarters of all federal spending. The rest goes toward a wide variety of programs, such as education, transportation, health programs, veterans' benefits and other areas.

This chart illustrates federal government spending for fiscal year 2004, broken down by major categories. Social security benefits account for the largest percentage of federal spending (21.7%), followed by spending on national defense (17.4%).

It would be interesting to see one from Canada Kiara. The term "social security" should be changed though. Maybe capitalist security would be better.

This is for the fiscal year 2000. There was no pie chart to go with it but it seems to be close to the 2004 one.

Chart 2-6. The Federal Government Dollar— Where it Goes
Chart 2-6 is a pie chart representing Federal Government spending for 2000. The chart is made up of nine items, each representing a percentage of total Government spending.

Item 1. Social Security 22%.
Item 2. Net Interest 11%.
Item 3. Medicare 11%.
Item 4. Medicaid 6%.
Item 5. Other Mandatory 6%.
Item 6. Other Means-tested entitlements 6% (Footnote: Means-tested entitlements are those for which eligibility is based on income. The Medicaid program is also a means-tested entitlement.)
Item 7. Reserve pending Social Security reform 6%.
Item 8. Non-defense discretionary 17%.
Item 9. National defense 15%.

Here is a different perspective of where tax dollars go with another pie chart and an explanation of the first pie chart.

http://www.warresisters.org/piechart.htm

Kraft, I'm sure Linda_k can find one for Canada. We already know Canada spends very little on military.

While looking for the pie chart I found this interesting comparison of countries throughout the world ....a good addition to the CIA factbook that Kiara mentioned on another thread. Canada is looking great in many categories especially in health, longevity, and low crime...compared to the US. Actually I'm not too far off topic because the rankings reflect budget priorities in many cases.

Helen, thanks!

That's a super site. The top graphs and categories on the left make it very easy to use.

Hey! With taxes, health, etc we're not so bad off after all.

Most of your tax dollars go to make up for the HUGE tax break bush gave the wealthiest 2% of the population.

Your tax dollars go to make up for the taxes off-shore companies don't pay at all. bush loves giving them federal contracts which WE pay for....double whammy!

I was reading one of the discussions on the North America forum over at Nationmaster called "Canada,USA & Mexico ?" and there were some amusing comments about all three countries from posters in those countries and the UK.... possibly other countries as well because not everyone is identified by their profile.

These categories are so broad it covers up the real expenditures. Ironic that they group Education and Social Services together, especially since the President made it so very clear that education is the means to reverse the job market.

GW's lack of attention to details and the very idea that he could look a person in their eye and tell them to get an education if they lost their job is the ultimate insult to American Labor. Try telling a person with a Master's Degree in Computer Engineering to get an education because they lost their job. Try telling a person who made a livable wage supporting a family of 4 who lost their job manufacturing doors for Ford to get an education. How the hell can you go to school and support your family? Pell Grants won't pay for it. In fact, Pell Grant money is less now than when I went to school based on inflation. There are more people applying for Pell Grants now as well. Less money + More Seekers + Higher Education Costs = Disaster. To make matters worse, you simply can't jump from being laid off from a job directly into school. You have to apply, wait for the beginning of the semester, you have to register, and buy books. Most of these things come before you receive one penny from a Pell Grant. So you have more out of pocket expenses. This president does nothing but insult the intelligence of American people.

I couldn't disagree more. This President has increased funding for education and defense and many other programs. MUCH more than was allocated during the last administration.

kerry's NOT going to be able to pay for all his promises. That's a FACT. Our taxes are going to be raised and he'll come up with some excuse as to why 'things have changed, and now he just can't give all that he promised'. He's a lying sham.

People can find all sorts of 'pies' that show different distributions of where our tax dollars go. But anyone who looks on the US CBO will be able to see clearly where our tax money goes.

The #1 biggest allocation is: Health and Human Services

#2 Social Security

#3 Dept. of Defense

#4 Treasury dept.
