I just saw the new ad where the Bush campaign is using images of wolves to try to strike fear into people. As soon as I saw the image of the beautiful wolf in the forest I thought of the environment. Wolves aren't scary..... I used to have a dog that was wolf/malamute and I knew a fellow that raised wolves and visited him and his wolves quite often.

What a stupid ad. It's obvious that the Bush campaign doesn't know anything about wolves.

Defenders of Wildlife Action Fund Reacts to Bush-Cheney Political Campaign Ad 'Wolves'

WASHINGTON, Oct. 22 /PRNewswire/ -- Today the Bush-Cheney campaign
released a political ad, "Wolves" in which the endangered species' image is
used to portray fear. Defenders of Wildlife Action Fund President Rodger
Schlickeisen offered the following statement:

"The Bush-Cheney campaign's most recent bizarre political commercial,
'Wolves,' misuses the imagery of wolves to try to instill fear in the voting
public.

How ironic for George Bush, who has been the most anti-wildlife president
ever, to turn to the very symbol of endangered wildlife in America -- the wolf
-- for assistance in perpetuating his administration. Wolf recovery in parts
of America, no thanks to this administration, represents one of the great
success stories of wildlife conservation in this country. This is the last
day of Wolf Awareness Week, and a chief purpose is to help educate the public
that the myths about wolves being threats to humans, are just that, myths.
But the Bush campaign is using that fictitious stereotype in a manner that
instills false fear.

President Bush's Department of the Interior is proposing to remove
endangered species protections that the wolf needs to continue to survive. In
fact there are lawsuits pending against the Bush Interior Department that
challenge their anti-wolf actions across the country. Also, even though
petitioned to do so, the Bush Interior Department refuses to use the Federal
Airborne Hunting Act to stop the outrageous and unethical shooting of wolves
from airplanes in Alaska. Right now there is a proposal in Alaska to expand
aerial wolf killing to include an additional 50,000 square miles of land.

Wolves have suffered from unjust persecution for centuries, but the real
'wolf at their door' right now, is the Bush presidential campaign which
threatens four more years of anti-wildlife policies.

Finally, it is worth pointing out that a wolf is a fierce defender of its
homeland and it has learned that when it attacks, it needs to work with others
to maximize its chance of success."

The only thing that the Bush campaign knows is lying, cheating, killing, fraud, deception (big time): you know all the dispictable things in a person.
He definately speaks with "forked tongue" In fact his behaviour could be a new example of what "speaking with forked tongue" means.

I guess it's OK to call people names as long as you invoke the lord afterwards. Yeah, that makes sense...

The ad is inappropriate and it may backfire on them. Its a shame some people won't be happy until most of the wildlife is gone in our country. Hunting from airplanes isn't my idea of hunting.

It must be nice to hide behind that religion and do nothing but insult people on a regular basis.

This ad is no surprise. The big bad wolf is still feared by lots of people, whose only image of the animal comes from fairy tales.
In Genesis, we are told that god created the earth and it's creatures for man's use. Further, man is told by god to have dominion over the earth and it's creatures, and to "subdue" it.
It fits perfectly with the President's fundamentalist christian beliefs.

Excellent point, profe51. There's not a single documented report where a human being has been killed by a wolf. Ignorance at its height... it just shows the lack of understanding of the behavior of different species.

The human species is the only predator that preys upon itself and prays while they do it.

Yes, but it's on your part if you believe the above.

And what about all the baby seals that get killed in Canada....and the wolves that are killed there. Is that acceptable to the lefties but not if an ad has a picture of one? LOL How ridiculous. Wolves kill ranchers livestock, horses and have been know to attack young children. The northern states want them taken off the endangered species list so they can kill them when they become a problems. Remember they usually travel in packs.

And don't forget the poor wild geese....that kerry and crew were out killing to show what a sportsman he is. Where's your outrage there?

Using wolves as a phony scare tactic is ignorant and sleazy.

Cheap political tricks have nothing to do with hunting or animal rights.

It has nothing to do with hunting....SOME liberals hunt, SOME don't ...just like any other segment of the population.

It has nothing to do with baby seals.

And the DNC now has an ad with the Eagle flying (DEMS) and an ostrich with his head in the sand (REPUPLICANS) with soothing music in the background.

tit for tat

Big deal they used WOLVES IN THEIR AD

Was it BUSH or the RNC that did that ad?

Yes, but it's on your part if you believe the above.

Attacking children? On both parts, show me documented proof. I watch nature shows and I've spent a lot of time in the woods in my life. Mostly domestic dogs in neighborhoods attack children and adults, not wolves.

Little Known Facts

Wolves were the most successful mammal until humans came around and took most of their range away.

Which is smarter, a wolf or a dog? Wolves! They are at least 10 times smarter than the domestic dog!

There has never been documentation of a healthy wolf attacking a human.

http://www.promotega.org/asu00004/wolfbehavior.html

And what about all the baby seals that get killed in Canada....

That comes under commercial fisheries, seals are not a protected species as their numbers are so vast so harvest can take place. Wild geese are not on the endangered species list either.

By the way it was the US wildlife service that asked Canada that they transplant some of their wolves to ranges here after we wiped them all out. This also goes for the eagle so this shows how we care for our natural species. It's a national disgrace in my opinion.

You know trai...I don't like the way you repeated DEMAND I do anything. I'd prefer to be asked in a nice tone of voice.

You can search google yourself ....just type in wolves attack and kill humans...here you will find substancial information of where it occurs most...and more than a couple sites give you the total numbers and dates where humans, adults and children have been killed.

And next time, IF you choose to ask me nicely I'll provide them for you.

Linda, you must be reading a different tone in my posts as I did not consider it a DEMAND by any means. You made a statement and I asked you to show me documented proof.

Wolf hybrids have been known to attack people but they aren't pure wolves. We are discussing the wolves in North America, I hope you realize that. Wolves go out of their way to avoid people but they do protect their young if they feel threatened.

WOLF ATTACKS 6-YEAR-OLD NEAR YAKUTAT
Article Date: Thursday, April 27, 2000
Page: A1
Section: Nation
By Karen Aho, Daily News Reporter
In what may be the first report of a wolf attacking a human in Alaska, a radio-collared wolf on Wednesday repeatedly bit a 6-year-old boy playing in a grove of alders at a logging camp northwest of Yakutat, Alaska State Troopers said. The boy had tears on his back and puncture wounds, but he was not seriously injured, troopers said. The wolf, an adult male that returned to the area shortly afterward and was shot, did not have any obvious signs of injury or trauma that would immediately explain aggressive behavior, troopers said. The wolf will be tested for rabies.

Environmentalists and animal lovers claim that wolves only kill the old and infirm.  They claim that they kill only what they need for survival.  The pictures and testimonies at natureswolves  puts the lie to those claims.
These same folks claim that wolves never attack humans.  That too is a lie.
If you believe that wolves will not attack humans, you must go to http://www.natureswolves.com/human/aws_wolfattacks.htm and learn more. Just one of the documented attacks is reprinted below.
Noted naturalists documented wolf attacks on humans.
-----

Philips Park Zoo - first says what you claim so I won't post that but then adds Several captive wolves have attacked and killed people. Wolves are wild predatory animals!
----------------
taken from RANGE magazine...a teachers statement -

Since historians seem to be having problems digging up this information, here are a few documented cases of wolves killing and/or injuring humans. Although wolves should not be excessively feared, and wolves that kill humans are very rare, we do need the truth told by someone.
Research: Scott, Peter A., et al. "Aggressive Behavior by Wolves Toward Humans." Journal of Mammalogy 66.4 (1985): 807-809; Munthe, Kathleen and J. Howard Hutchinson. "A Wolf-Human Encounter on Ellesmere Island, Canada" Journal of Mammalogy 59.4 (1978): 876-878; McNay, Mark E. "Interactions in Alaska and Canada: A Review of the Case History." Wildlife Society Bulletin 30.3 (2002): 831-843.
Scientist: Arctic wolf attacks a scientist in Canada (1985 - Arctic, Vol. 38, 1985).
Female Researcher: Three penned wolves had to be killed before rescuers could get to the body of a female wildlife reserve employee that the wolves had killed in their pen (1996 - The Kingston Wig Standard, Ontario, Canada, April 20).
Trapper and Two Indians: An elderly trapper did not return to the post office as promised, so two Indians were sent to find him. All three were killed by wolves (1922 - Port Arthur, Ontario newspaper, Dec. 27).
Negro Man: Two Negro men were attacked in Kentucky by wolves on the way home from visiting girlfriends. One survived by climbing a tree (1851 - John James Audubon, "Black American Wolf" in Quadrupeds of North America).
Farmer and Son: A pack of wolves attacked and ate a farmer and his son (1888 - The Saint Paul Daily Globe, March 8).
Eskimo Woman: She was strangled by a wolf as her husband rushed to her assistance (1829 - John Richardson in "Fauna Boreali-Americana".
Sick Indians: Not only did wolves come into the Indian camps and eat corpses dead of smallpox, but also attacked, killed, and ate the sick (1770 - Peter Kalm in "Travels in North America".
Injured: Several instances of nonfatal, but serious attacks in Canada and Alaska have appeared recently in the news: Algonquin Provincial Park, 1996; Yakutat, Alaska, 2000; Vargas Island, British Columbia, 2002 (The Wolf Society of Great Britain, www.myinternet.co.uk/wsgb/index.htm).
Rabies: Of course history is also full of accounts of rabid wolves killing humans, but advocates slip around these records by concentrating on "healthy" wolves. Since wild wolves can't be vaccinated, why does it seem so comforting to think a wolf must be rabid to attack a human? By insisting the accounts be "documented," scientists and advocates are also able to discredit hunters, Indians, Eskimos, and rural people who just "remember" but don't write the story down or publish it.
Guns: Wolf attacks on humans seem to occur mostly in places where the general population is unarmed and/or where wolves are protected. The low number of recent historical encounters within the U.S. borders as compared to India, for instance, are probably due to the fact that during the period of America's written history almost every citizen went about armed and seldom passed up a chance to shoot at a wolf. Protected animals lose their fear of humans.

So...there are just a few random ones...like I said if you want more do the google search on
'wolves attack and kill humans'.

It appears to me that those who don't want to see wolves distroyed argue they don't hurt anyone...they're shy animals...unless they're sick [rabid, etc]. And those who don't like wolves want the freedom to kill them when they bother their life or their property....of course feel differently.

Okay Linda, you managed to google a few isolated cases. With some we don't know the health of the animal or all the circumstances and perhaps mankind is encroaching on the wolves territory. Others speak of captive or penned wolves. For a wolf to attack a human it is so far a rare occurrence.

The one thing I did notice in most of the google stories was that the animals were very young or "lean", the girl with the cow got in the way of a food source.... as far as the one in the 1800's who knows what really happened. I still maintain most healthy wolves do not take down humans.

Have you ever been in the great outdoors? Most of the time I'm out there I don't have a gun unless its hunting season.

trai - Yes, I have been many times when I was in my teens. I absolutely hated it each and everytime. My idea of camping is in a hotel with room service ...perferably one in a casino in Vegas or Tahoe...or renting a cabin that I usually stayed in while my family and our friends went fishing or hiking. I am not an outdoors person. I love looking at it...not sleeping there.

I agree tria there aren't a huge amount of attacks nor deaths....but I was challenging your statement that there were none.

On some of the articles I read where the wolf populations are very high...some felt this was causing an inbalance of the other herds of animals since the wolves are such strong preditors....thus making the environment tilted too much one way.

But to get all upset over a picture of a wolf in the forest seems just a tad silly to me.

Hmm……… seems like I’m not the only one that Linda_k has trouble with interpreting the tone of posts. Lol

Please note, I am talking in my usual calm and quiet manner.

Appears it's only okay from the left who appears to have absolutely NO sense of humor

Linda_k, if you find humor in parklane's continuous posts about the functions of certain body parts and orifices that's fine. Perhaps both of you could start a new thread topic about it and discuss it in depth and keep that kind of humor between yourselves and any other neocons that seem to relish in it.

Thanks for the facts about wolves, Trai. They are one of the most beautiful animals on this earth and no one should fear them. I hope the younger generation grows up with more knowledge and respect for nature and our environment and learns to appreciate it and value it.

Obviously this ad is targeted towards the uninformed neocons as were the previous Bush ads. Linda_k is a test case and she passed with flying colors.
