From a Michigan Newspaper.
When did Dr. James Dobson become God?
The psychologist/pundit/political far-right-winger appears to be bucking for the top job. At least that was the impression he left after a Nov. 7 exchange with George Stephanopoulos on ABC's This Week.
Dobson made it clear his people would not stand for the appointment of raving liberal Sen. Arlen Specter, R-Pa., as chairman of the Senate judiciary committee.
Specter, one of the few remaining Republican senators to whom the term "moderate" can be applied, made the fatal mistake of standing on principle. He takes a pro-choice stand on abortion and said anti-abortion judicial nominees would have a hard time with his committee.
Dobson let it be known this will not stand.
"Sen. Specter is a big-time problem for us," Dobson said. "He is a problem and must be derailed."
Sounds as if the senator should avoid taking the train for a while. He might end up losing more than his luggage.
Dobson also has written some choice words about another miscreant, Sen. Patrick Leahey, D-Vt.
This is the same Patrick Leahey who was on the receiving end of Vice President Dick Cheney's urging that he go do something to himself I can't print in this newspaper.
"Patrick Leahy is a God's people hater," Dobson wrote. "I don't know if he hates God, but he hates God's people."
To which Stephanopoulos said: "Now Dr. Dobson, that doesn't sound like a particularly Christian thing to say. Do you think you owe Senator Leahy an apology?"
Dobson replied: "George, you think you ought to lecture me on what a Christian is all about?"
Well, somebody should. The good doctor must have missed the Sunday school class where they teach you that you should at least respect people you decide are your enemies.
He also missed the class where they teach you not to think for God.
The danger of Dobson and his cronies is they really believe this stuff. There is no room for dissent or tolerance in their world.
They believe they have a corner on faith and patriotism. But I'm reminded the most patriotic people in World War II were the Germans, and the most patriotic Germans were the Nazis, who knew they had all the answers.
One of my favorite Bible verses is Isaiah 1:18. It was Lyndon Johnson's favorite, too: "Come now, and let us reason together, saith the Lord."
Reasoning together has gone out of style. People such as Dobson just make things worse.
They perpetuate the stereotype that people of faith are intolerant, bigoted ideologues who prefer name-calling to true religion. They believe they've bought the cross and the flag and must merge them with the Republican Party.
Those who dissent are wrong. Period.
You know, unless something changes, the radical right might just give Christianity a bad name.

Believe it or not, yeager, the 'far right' is not the only group of American's that don't like a potential blockage on judicial nominees. Just like kerry said he'd NOT allow anyone to become a judge unless they met his litmus test. Meaning we weren't going to see any conservative, anti-partial birth abortion judges being placed on the bench if he became President. Well...he didn't.
There are also conservatives, conservative dems and some moderate dems who don't approve of any litmus tests being required in order to place a Judge. period!

Specter Threatens Bush on Pro-Life Judges
by Pete Winn, associate editor
With as many as four vacancies on the Supreme Court coming in the next four years, comments from the likely new chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee raise the hackles of pro-family leaders.
Pro-family leaders reacted with outrage today to comments by U.S. Sen. Arlen Specter "expected to be named chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee in January "that President Bush shouldn't bother nominating pro-life judges to the federal bench.
The Pennsylvania Republican, an unapologetic supporter of abortion on demand, seemed to indicate in his comments to the Associated Press that he would join Democratic-led efforts to block socially conservative judicial nominees.
.....
Dr. James Dobson, founder and chairman of Focus on the Family Action, called Specter's comments "arrogant grandstanding" and "the worst kind of political bullying." He charged the senator with threatening the president.
"He is warning President Bush not to consider his re-election margin or the passionate effort by committed Christians to get him elected," Dobson said.
Such action is especially egregious, he added, considering that Specter probably wouldn't even have been in position to win re-election Tuesday if it hadn't been for Bush "who upset some pro-family conservatives by endorsing Specter in a volatile primary battle this spring.
Phyllis Schlafly, founder of Eagle Forum and author of a book on judicial activism called "The Supremacists," agreed, saying that Specter was clearly being "impudent."
"His comments are outrageous, and I hope that President Bush will admonish him," Schlafly said. "After all, Specter would not have been elected without the intervention of President Bush.
And I think President Bush ought to put him down."
Tom Minnery, vice president of government and public policy at Focus on the Family, said Specter represents "a fading wing of the Republican Party" that does not see the real message of the barely finished election.
"As a so-called moderate who supports abortion and wants judges who also support abortion, Specter represents a narrowing slice of the party," Minnery said.
"The tremendous victory on Tuesday, particularly the sweep of the marriage amendments in 11 states, proves that people are tired of the courts trying to reshape society.
"If Arlen Specter tries to run into that wind, he's going to be blown away."
Kay Daly, president of the Coalition for a Fair Judiciary, agreed America doesn't need the same kind of obstructionism from liberal Republicans that the Democrats used to block many of the president's nominations during his first term.
"Clearly one of the underlying forces that drove our voters to the polls was the issue of judicial tyranny "whether it's in gay marriage, whether it's in the Ten Commandments, whether it's in the Pledge of Allegiance," she said. "Any issue that we care about is going to fall to the purview of the courts."
Daly said voters got rid of one "symbol of Democratic obstructionism" "Minority Leader Tom Daschle, who lost his re-election bid Tuesday. It was Daschle, along with Sens. Ted Kennedy and Patrick Leahy, who has been at the forefront of the Democratic filibuster efforts that have stymied several of the president's nominations.

-------------
So now Spector has signed a pledge, or at least promised President Bush that he will NOT block President Bush's nominations from going to a vote and has promised to get them out of committee quickly so they CAN be voted upon. And now Spector has been approved by both the House and the Senate I believe.
He was put in his place....as he should have been. The past history of dems obstructionism isn't right....allow. Those who the President nominated deserved to go to a vote rather than be blocked. Now maybe they will be.
edited again to change wording of my point.

I have assured the president that I would give his nominees quick committee hearings and early committee votes,'' Specter said at a news conference where outgoing chairman Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, said the panel's Republicans were unanimous in backing the Pennsylvania moderate.
''I have no reason to believe that I'll be unable to support any individual President Bush finds worthy'' of the federal bench, Specter told reporters.
He read from a statement he wrote that was cleared painstakingly in advance by committee members as well as the GOP leadership.
The leaders are determined to confirm Bush's second-term judicial nominees, possibly including a Supreme Court justice.
Even so, Specter said he felt no pressure to make the commitments he made.
An official vote won't come until January and can still be appealed to the full 55-member GOP caucus. But all nine Judiciary Republicans agreed they would stand behind Specter in January's vote for chairman despite his postelection statement saying that anti-abortion judges would have a difficult time gaining Senate confirmation, given Democratic opposition.

Come on now. "maggie - I don't go to church, I don't get on my knees to pray, so again, you and helen are batting zero when it comes to your 'game playing' assumptions."
Then how is it that you can be so "religious" if you don't go to church? So where do you go to worship, the republican party headquarters?

Maggie,
That might be right. I thought it might be when you have too many beers at a hockey game and you hurl on the ice. Then somebody would say something like, "look at him, he just pucked, how gross".
