Maggie, since you know so much about Canal street, tell everyone about Airline Drive in New Orleans.
Americans again prove Pres Bush is the best man for the job
"War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things. The person who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself." --John Stuart Mill

I really don't know that much about Canal street Bear. I know about the brothel because it was a TV movie not long ago.. but I was downtown a couple of weeks ago with friends from out of town.. of course they wanted to see Bourbon street and the river walk etc.. it is great for tourists, but I am glad I don't live there.
As far as Airline hwy goes.. the only time I use it is when I go to the Airport.. the only other thing I can think of that could be of interest is the Zephyrs Stadium.. is there something you were referring to?

I remember WAY back when I was doing Navy Reserve duty in New Orleans in last week of June, 1st week of July of 1973.I didnt mind the heat so much-but the humidity was unbearable.
It was 30 years ago,but the things I do remember was a bridge going over Lake Ponchatrain, canal and burbon sts-Al Hirts place-and a cool bar on top of a hotel that revolved around every 90 minutes-it was called "Top Of The Mart" I went to a similar bar in Seattle in 1971 called the Space Needle.Another
thing I do remember was a section of New Orleans called "Fat City" There were nothing but bars from one end of the street to the other..these people DO know how to party. I imagine after 30 years, some of these places dont even exist anymore.Another thing I remember was waking up my first morning there and going to a resturant for breakfast.Knowing nothing about southern traditions except what I saw in Gone With The Wind, I order eggs, toast, juice, coffee. The guy brings out the plate and the first thing I notice is some disgusting white crap on the plate next to the eggs. The first thing that came to mind is that some perverted cook shot his load on my plate.....Hey what the hell do I know?-I have a northern accent and Im in a strange southern city-you can never tell what these people might do.So I asked the guy what the hell is THAT?? He said thats grits..I said grits?? what the hell are grits?? needless to say I didnt eat them. One other thing about this trip was-I was on Navy Reserve duty and I drove from N.Y. to New Orleans about 1500 miles, 3000 round trip-the Navy had to pay me 6 cents a mile. That was a nice peice of change. When I got there I found out that the barracks was filled and they had to pay me to stay in a motel for two weeks.I stayed in the cheapest one I could find and made out like a bandit. They also had to pay me for 3 meals a day-and eating in cheap resturants I also made out like a bandit. They also had to pay me two weeks Military pay to boot.Since I was on Military leave from work,The New York State Police also had to pay me two weeks salary......HEY WHAT A COUNTRY !!!!!

When I went to the New York State fair in late August 1969 I remember them taking contributions to a relief fund for Mississippi after Hurrciane Camile went thru.I took a 6 week vacation in late Sept and on my way back from Calif I took rt 10 from Santa Monica to Jacksonville, fla. When I passed thru Boloxi,Ms,
on rt 10 it was a disaster area.I remember seeing the front of a church completly gone and seeing the pews and crucifixtion. There was a huge crack in the highway and the westbound lane was 4 or 5 inches higher then the eastbound lane it looked like they had an earthquake there...what a mess

Hey, classic, I lived in Honolulu for a short period in 1970 and there were half a dozen revolving restaurants there, then. I remember counting 29 construction cranes from our lanai. I lived on Kaioo Drive http://www.mapquest.com/maps/map.adp?ovi=1&zoom=7&mapdata=IdYv7LHke6z2oews4VXK9gSGn7nplJgvCQJXVNSNByxr5ganb8vzVSw%2bQPujPdp3gnKRxeJGyYyrWzgVtWC%2f0bR%2bFsWs1a8WcU1k8cOI6pN0lp1cbKoL9HORa2foH4o3vsF%2blPF%2bXBGMNzaCKf00ocmjArCnVe0JkS7QpvsDgOmoY1E4YRA6arGFI%2f8pjEL2zd7f9neH21YLK9umuGfdRke%2f4FyhFC1lMHnyGYYxkTqM%2bBBU4YnOVrVEnWoVX0Z6QZhiIPF02aQSBxgxxFPF58nCDvlQnsz79CQq3uKSrmEoyEAHrQ975OSlJ%2fqEGnkZNailnxQoVyv7aC%2ff66ulgN2AvyOs7nd%2fv8rPFxMFpmqHkF4ir4srSQ%3d%3d and could also see the roof of the Ilikai hotel http://www.ilikaihotel.com/ where Steve McGarrett stood for the lead pan-in for Hawaii Five-O http://www.mjq.net/fiveo/.
I had to walk diagonally across the Ala Moana Shopping Center http://www.alamoana.com/ to get to McKinley High School, where I was a minority student. Visiting the Arizona Memorial http://www.arizonamemorial.org/ decided me on becoming a sailor.
Ah, the good old days. ---sigh---

Park-I was stationed there in the Navy when I was 19 in 1965.Our ship just came back from South America and was in "dry dock" for 3 months for refitting for guns before we left for Vietnam in November. The good thing was we only had to work 1/2 day which gave me plenty of time to go to Waikiki which to my disappointment was very rocky, lots of coral.I was stationed on the USS MAURY AGS 16-It was a geographical survey ship.I did learn how to surf, but not very well-and one time I went to the north end somewhere around Wiamia? not sure of the name, its been 40 years LOL.All I know is the waves were very big up there, and as you might expect I got my ass kicked lol
