Does anybody here use VOIP for their phone service? That's the telephone "through the internet" service.
And if you do, how do you like it?
I've been thinking about getting it--you get to keep your old phone number, have VoiceMail & assorted goodies just like through the phone company, but it costs a whole lot less. Since I don't do a lot of long-distance calling, the basic plan at $14.99 per month would do well for me (& that's a lot better than $34.95 per month to Verizon).

My son does....and loves it. I know at first he had a problem getting the phone calls to come through - people said they'd call and he hadn't received it...but it was quickly straightened out. I don't know if his is called VOIP or not...but it does as you describe and the price IS great.

Can't remember the name--left the print-out on it a work. And yes there's hardsware, but the ad I was looking at yesterday has a full rebate on the cost of it, so the hardware ends up being free.
I'll bring the print-out when I come home for lunch.

Yep, it was Vonnage.
I like what I've heard about it so far, but I'm going to ask around some more & do some research before I make the leap. I must say, though, that so far it sounds like it would be perfect for me.

The thing is that I don't make lots of long distance calls. In fact, I don't use my phone much at all--and Verizon still charges me $34.95 a month ($4.95 of that is for voice messages)--& sometimes more, if I've made toll calls to nearby area codes.
Vonage has a base plan costing $14.99 per month, which includes voice messages as well as letting you get those messages via email, plus other goodies. The base plan gives you 500 minutes per month (way, way, way more than I use the phone) for outgoing calls. Incoming calls are free. And if you make a call to someone else that has Vonage, no matter where in the world, that call is free.
I am strongly leaning toward this service!!!!!
