As most know, President Lincoln was the one who proclaimed this day a National holiday. Some believe he did so, in part, to help heal our divided nation.

To make matters worse.. the meal was horrible, just horrible..
But the company was great and that's what matters Looks like I will be cooking a turkey tomorrow.

Sorry to hear that, Maggie! I didn't spend much...picked up my contribution, shrimp and veggies, from the Deli and the dinner was MAHvelous Dahling! From the salmon pate, through three kinds of dressing, 4 salads, wild rice casserole, a vegetable cheesy thing, the best turkey I ever had, real mashed potatoes with homemade gravy, fresh homemade dinner rolls, excellent wines and four kinds of pie...it was heaven!
I'm sure your dinner tomorrow will be the same! Am I invited ?

Crow! What a Wonderful feast!
I can't begin to tell you how awful the food was at the Casino! Watered down fake mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce that was so bitter, even the bread pudding with praline sauce was dry.. Yuck..
Tomorrow, I will cook a small turkey and all the trimmings. I don't think I'll bother with the pies or sweets.. as I am watching my weight these days, and if I keep it in the house, it magically disappears?
So glad that you had a wonderful day! Is the weather cold up your way yet? We finally got the cold front they have been promising us. It has been so unseasonably warm down here this month.
Oh, and by the way, anytime you decide to come down this way..I would love for you to come and visit! Maggie

Maggie - after extensive research of casinos in many states, I have come to believe that the only buffet worthy of actually looking forward to is the one at the Mirage in Las Vegas. I warn you though, their coconut macaroons are the things addictions are made of.
Oh yeah - and the ugliest carpet (it's amazing what you find to amuse yourself after a week in Vegas) is the Poppy Field and at the MGM Grand. Doesn't matter where I go or how hard it seems some of these designers have tried, there is just is nothing uglier than that carpet. Especially bad since they removed the Emerald City display that used to being in the center of it... now it's just pointless ugly carpet.
As long as we are on casinos.... can anyone tell me where the matching glittered and bedazzled sweatsuits go after their owners leave the casino? I see these women walking around in these (oh yeah, and the short crowned black felt hats with gold lame bands and big plastic jewels too) tributes to gaudy in casinos wherever I go but I never see them worn anywhere else.

Casino carpet is designed to hide the mess made by hundreds of thousands of tourists who traipse over it every day.
I've only been to one and couldn't tell you if my life depended on it - the design of the carpet. No one there was wearing bedazzled sweat suits but I would guess that those outfits that you saw wind up with halloween costumes in the trash....UNLESS the people who wear them plan as you did, "to do an extensive research of casinos in many states" and then, it might pay to carry them about.

Fenix.. I can't say that we have ever had a spectacular dinner at a casino buffet, but most have been acceptable.. Yesterday's however was beyond bad.. and I think there should be a law against any restaurant using fake mashed potatoes!LOL
LOL.. I have seen plenty of garish outfits! I especially get a kick out of the older couples that dress like twins, with matching shirts usually adorned with prints of slot machines or cards and dice and some brightly colored polyester pants to match.. LOL.. Never mind.. they are having a good time!
Here on the coast people do not dress-up to go to the casinos at all.
I went to a Casino in Malta where there is a dress code, the women wore long evening gowns and the men were in Tuxedos..the casino was gorgeous, not at all like what we have here... gleaming marble floors, cherry wood paneled walls, velvet covered chairs, sparkling chandeliers, no loud machine clanging and bells etc.. such a difference!!
When I was there, the working class were not allowed to gamble... so the only people in the casino were foreigners, or the very wealthy..
Anyway, the turkey's in the oven, the house smells divine.. a day late and a dollar short, that seems to be my motto.. LOL....

Helen - you ar just not observant enough The carpet thing came on day five of a Vegas trip. One of the crew I was with noted how ugly the capet in the casino we were in was (Actually, I think he was drunk and said the pattern was making him dizzy) and it turned into a game where we rated carpets in each casino on an ugliness scale. It stuck and now now matter where I am I always check out the carpets. The poppy field at the MGM though I think will forever be the grand champion.
I love casinos but have to admit that Vegas is my fave since most other locations seem to not have my favorite game - craps.

Fenix.. I like craps too! It is fast way to make bunches of money or on the other hand...lol..I like the fast pace.
The casino I went to yesterday is downtown New Orleans, (Harrah's). It is decorated inside like the French Quarter, really quite nice.. but very dark, no sense of time, could be night or day.. no clocks, no windows, except at the entrances etc..so all time stops once inside..
Oh and 30.00 for the valet parking.. a bit steep in my opinion.. Maggie
