Just wandering what if anything have the liberal people of the RT given to the tsunami relief? Or is your humanitarian act just that...

Not worried about the good conservatives on this board... they probably have given generously already...

Me? I have donated $100... figure that is enough...

I was going to until I watched a news story about all of the money that would have been going to the African relief efforts this year that are not going to make there because it's been redirected to Tsunami Relief charities. After hearing that, I thought that my funds might be better used in a different direction. I donated to KeepAChildAlive.org which provides ARV treatment to HIV positive children and parents in Africa.

If it's really "common" sense, why do so few people actually have it?

I donate to the American Red Cross so I think I donated to the tsunami relief. Watching all the news shows, particularly MSNBC, is really heart wrenching. What an awful loss. Entire generations wiped out in a single blow. I could never imagine going through the pain they are suffering physically and emotionally. And you can sign me . . . a liberal.

Cheryl - important lesson learned from 9/11 and from the San Diego debacle... When donating to the Red Cross you must specifiy where you want your funds directed in the memo portion of your check otherwise they put them in the general fund and for all you know, you just paid for a new phone system or the Office Depot Bill. It's sad but after those two incidents, I don't trust the Red Cross that much.

I'll stick with private focused charities. No matter how much flack the French Doctors without Borders group got for it, you have to respect a charity that tells people that they have all the funds they need to cover the incident in question and suggests they redirect their donation to other groups still in need.

Just this morning our church came out with a neat idea. They had several dozen 5 gallon buckets with a list of supplies inside. Everyone who was interested took a bucket and is to buy the supplies on the list- cleaning supplies, tools, and other things. The buckets will be distributed to people within Ohio who have had significant damage due to the floods we've had in the past week.

With this kind of plan, it's pretty difficult for anyone to be corrupt and line their pockets when all you have is windex, rubber gloves, a few snacks and crowbars in a plastic bucket. It's also a much more "hands on" approach than just giving your money to a bunch of potentially corrupt aid workers.

And I regularly support our local food bank, which feeds thousands of local people each year. I haven't actually volunteered to work there (yet... I may someday) but give weekly.

That being said:

I'm having a really hard time coming up with the wording for this next part...

I feel sorry for the Indonesians who lost everything, especially those who lost their children, but I just cannot get around the fact that Indonesia has the highest Muslim populaion on the earth, The Indonesians may not be suicide bombing anyone, but they still hate us with the core of their being.

I can only think that if the tables were turned and the disaster happened here, they would be celebrating in the streets, not sending aid. But then again, that's exactly what happened on 9/11, and we saw it on film.

No. I prefer to give my money to help those in need nearby. If I ever need help, no Indonesian is going to assist me in any way. If the UN wants to help, fine. That's what they are there for. I don't personally support the UN, but that is one of their uses.

Now, let's see how many people tear up that statement...

The day before Thanksgiving a tornado went through a small town a few miles north of here. 70% of the homes were destroyed as well as the school and several businesses. FEMA says that the town was not large enough to qualify for federal aid. The State is broke and does not have the funds to help them. These people lost everything and they are receiving no assistance. My donations went to them.

Be kind. Everyone is fighting their own secret battles.

We are leaving the Tsunami relief to the wealthy actors and actresses.

We are donating to the "Feed the Children". A Fund to feed the poor in the US and giving locally. The Indonesia government seems to be ungrateful for the help they are getting, but I guess they just can't see what is happening to their population.

I think it was some historical figure ...maybe Jesus(?) ..who said charitable works are worthless unless you publicize them and expect the recipients to kiss your butt forever.
If you don't brag about them to make yourself look good, like good christians, they don't count in "heaven".
So now we know who earned "heaven".

Unless you remember that anyone (including myself) can type anything..........it doesn't make it true.

I have a sculpture of my husband's on eBay now, for the Red Cross. They'll use it for wherever the need is most. (With the hurricanes, tsunamis, mudslides and now avalanches..they'll know where it's needed.) We got a letter from the Red Cross, just couldn't get in Missionfish.

We've also donated cash to the many different groups raising funds.

Donate your hard earned money!

Who's going to get it, the poor people in the background who lost their shacks and have nothing?
Or the wealthy resort owners who need the millions to rebuild the resorts to pull in the tourist dollars?

My guess is the latter, after all the poor got their bucket of rice, what more do they need!

Well, I don't know about Kraft but I wrote a check for several thousand dollars(modesty keeps me from saying just how MANY thousands)to the Tsunami relief efforts. But it was just one of SO many checks I write!
Sold the Bentley and bought shoes for all the Boy Scouts.
I do the Walk for Orphan Pets, Walk to Save the Chickens from the Brutality of KFC, and four or five cancer walks a week.
I spent 20 years with the Peace Corps living in a shack with a dirt floor helping poor people plant their crops.
I donated my home to a homeless family and now I live in a shelter.
I have built dozens of houses for Habitat for Humanity until my hands bled.
I encouraged Mother Theresa when she just wanted to chuck it all.

I was awarded the National Philanthropic Award several times for my saintly contributions to saving the world.
Aren't I a wonderful christian ? I AM going to heaven!

P.S. I'm not bragging, but I'm known as the Mother Theresa of Canada.

Tulleys coffee is giving 100% of the profit made from their Sumatra brand coffee to the tsuami relief. You have to find a Tulleys store, they don't have them in the supermarket (they have Tulleys at Albertsons, but it has to have the stamp 'Tsunami Relief' on it)

I'm not sure now if Tulleys is nationwide like Starbucks, or not. But they are all over here in Seattle.. The plant for roasting the beans is here.

just a thought, if your a huge coffee fan.
