When questioned, Colin Powell said that troops should start returning home within a year. When Bush was questioned about what Powell said, he said he had no plans of bringing troops home while he is in office, which means they'll be in Iraq for another 4 years. Does anyone know what the plan is yet and why Bush is so evasive when asked about his exit plans?

Bush's plan is "Stay the Course". What exactly that means only Bush knows. I don't feel there was ever really a well thought out plan. Everything after the initial infiltration of Iraq has been a disaster. Nothing has gone as expected so Bush and Company has to keep revising their plans. I think they are on plan "Z" right now.
Absolute faith has been shown, consistently, to breed intolerance. And intolerance, history teaches us, again and again, begets violence.

Not having read their exact quotes....I would say that Colin Powell was referring to the 12 month 'turn around' when the majority of the troops will return home - their tour being up.
And Bush has repeatedly said they'll stay there as long as they're needed and not a minute longer. My projection....we're going to have troops in Iraq for at least his second term in office....and more likely at least 10 years or so. [As are troops clinton sent to foreign countries where they're still serving.]

Linda, do you think being in Iraq for another (possible) 10 years is good for the U.S.? Does the good outweight the bad in your opinion? Do you think the U.S. will be successful at Americanizing the Middle East, even though their politics are based on a religion we find fanatical?

Personally I don't expect to see the number of US troops there that we currently have now. I expect as time goes on the Iraqi's will build their own military to a point where they can handle what we're doing for them now.

Yes, it does. The ME has been a hotbed for generations...It's going to take generations before we see the changes we are hoping for.

Time will tell, KD, I don't have a crystal ball and can't project what will come about. But I know we're hoping that the more democratic states that pop up in the ME the better it will be for the world as a whole. I think what we're seeing at this time is a group effort to have the different religious groups form a government where they all believe they are represented - while still clinging to their own religious beliefs. Just like we have here in the U.S.

Iran...don't you think more of their own population would like to have political parties rule their country rather than the clerics making all their decisions?
