Was listening to a radio program and this was the topic...
Host brought up a good point, with all the birth control and abortion being legal, a woman getting pregnant today is a LIFESTYLE CHOICE...
So she should not get any job protection, she can't work... she loses the job...
I agree with that... why should an employer be forced to hold a job for 6-8 weeks and other workers have to pick up the slack for a choice this woman made...
She should be let go the moment she can no longer work....

You're KINDA right, but not completely.
Pregnancy leave should be an optional BENEFIT for working for a company, just like vacation time or health insurance. The policy should be made clear at the time of hiring amd then enforced if needed. The government should have no say in it.
Back when I had my store, I had usually one employee other than myself there on any particular day. SOMETIMES (but usually not) I had a part-time backup person available. If my full-time worker wanted to take two months off (for WHATEVER reason) I would have had to replace her.
Who is going to want to go through the hiring process, train an employee, set up payroll, etc, when you KNOW they're only going to be working there for two months? What person would want to be hired and learn a new job (or even do a good job) knowing the job was temporary?
Fortunately the situation never came up for me, but if it had, it would have been a real mess. Maternity leave should be a benefit like any other, offered by the larger companies that can afford it. No I didn't offer paid vacations or health insurance either. There are PLENTY of small companies in the exact same position.

I agree what replay mostly said.I also dont think a woman should be penalized for getting pregnant. That is what our society is based on, growing up and raising children.Obviously I dont think she should be paid for this, but on the other hand I dont think she should be fired either.

Twelve what would happen if you broke a leg and were out for 6-8 weeks-should you be fired?
I understand it was her CHOICE and breaking a leg is not,but the fact remains you're still out 6-8 weeks and the other workers still have to pick up your slack.

Children are the future. We need to have policies that encourage American women to have more. They do seem to be reluctant to fulfill their destiny.

Oh yes, let's pay people to have kids. All we need are more poor and uneducated people with too many kids sucking up the welfare money.
We should probably pay for sterilizations. That would actually solve a problem.

I have a hard time with this Twelve. I think if women get leave for having a child, the dad should too, like they do in Japan. In Japan, the dad gets leave for x amount of months but has to complete a child rearing course before he gets paid. Here, I think it would be a good idea for both.

park-I dont agree with that-Im all for birth control. We have enough little bastards running around the planet by parents who either dont watch or dont give a rats ass about them.
I.E.-NO DISCIPLINE
Maggie-I dont agree with that either. Why should an employer have to pay because YOU want to get pregnant? Thats a personal choice you made.
However as I said,I dont think she should be fired over it either.
A lot of companies have paid sick leave.I know many female troopers who used that when they got pregnant. So while they were out, they still got paid. But they had to save that sick leave as we get so many days a year. When they run out of sick leave, they go on half pay,but when they come back they have to pay that back. When I left,I also got paid for all the sick leave I had accumlated of the 36 years I worked there. This is a great incentive to save sick leave and not abuse it.

Where I work they bent over backwards for pregnant women. They get all the time off they need for appointments, having morning sickness, extra breaks so they can eat "less" more often, and disability when they have to leave the last month until they return 6 weeks after.....
....But GOD FORBID someone else miss work for two days because they can't even stand up because of this godforsaken flu! (Complete with a doctor's note.)

Oh, twig, that's just the start....then there is the endless discussions of every phase of the pregnancy (followed by details of the delivery as if something DIFFERENT is going to happen), the office showers(none of this costs MONEY in wasted time, of course), then obviously the hospital stay must be free because only smokers make insurance rates go up. Then there's the phony "day off-I'm late" excuses that are accepted with no problem..."my kid's sick" ( I have to go to the casino). Then there's the leniency on changing their hours on a whim because they have CHILDREN at home.
But it's only smoker's who raise the cost of insurance. Only smokers who waste time at work.
