Rumsfeld Takes Conciliatory Tone in Europe

Updated 9:07 AM ET February 12, 2005

By JOHN J. LUMPKIN

MUNICH, Germany (AP) - Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld struck a conciliatory tone at a European security conference Saturday, saying the American-European alliance could withstand its current differences and calling for unified efforts to defeat terrorism and weapons proliferation.

Referring to his earlier critical description of European nations that opposed the Iraq war as "old Europe," he said, "That was old Rumsfeld," drawing laughs from the assembled officials.

"Our collective security depends on our cooperation and mutual respect and understanding," Rumsfeld told the conference, which included U.N. chief Kofi Annan, NATO Secretary-General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer and German Defense Minister Peter Struck.

Rumsfeld called for further cooperative efforts to counter the spread of weapons of mass destruction and terrorism.

"Our Atlantic alliance relationship has navigated through some choppy seas over the years. But we have always been able to resolve the toughest issues. That is because there is so much to unite us: common values, shared histories, and an abiding faith in democracy," he said.

Rumsfeld singled out the governments of France and Germany, two of the biggest critics of the war in Iraq, for praise for their arrests of suspected Islamic extremists last month.

His description of France and Germany as part of "old Europe" caused bad blood in the run-up to the war.

Rumsfeld came out strongly against a suggestion to move away from NATO as the main vehicle for trans-Atlantic dialogue.

"NATO has a great deal of energy and vitality," Rumsfeld said. "I believe they are undertaking the kinds of reforms to bring the institution into the 21st century. The place to discuss trans-Atlantic issues clearly is NATO."

I see this administration is finally learning that they can not combat terrorism all by themselves. I guess we do not have enough troops or money to take on Iraq, NK and Iran on our own.

ugh...no...not the case at all. They never wanted to "combat terrorism all by themselves"...and they asked for help at the beginning....it was called the Coalition of the Willing.

short memory...and once again discounting those countries that did help and are still helping.

tsk tsk

linduh won't answer this post because she's afraid of me but in answer to:
"""ugh...no...not the case at all. They never wanted to "combat terrorism all by themselves"...and they asked for help at the beginning....it was called the Coalition of the Willing."""

NO, not the case at all ....the bush administration has said it would go into Iraq alone if need be.
"Coalition of the Willing"????

No, sweetie, "Coalition of Those promised Lots of Monetary Aid" is more accurate.

This administration and many neocons have acted like the U.S is the ruler of the world and are now finding out they really do need help. They , at the beginning offended many countries with their arrogant demands and are now slowly learning bush is NOT World Ruler just yet.

and they asked for help at the beginning....it was called the Coalition of the Willing.

And the two major military "willing body" were England and Austrailia.

What happened to all the traditional US Allies?

Don't forget we have countries withdrawing their troops at the first sign of trouble - Spain, Japan and Costa Rica.

well...we've been learning about how some had special deals with saddam for oil. They didn't want to end those oil-for-food trades.

Many of you lefties here harp on and on about Halliburton...but it doesn't appear to bother you that the reason some didn't join us was that they were making big $$.

Nope...once again...ONLY blame your own country.

Linda, if Annan and his son are guilty of profiting, they should be severely punished.

Now about the begging for war aid, I wonder why all these countries don't want to get involved? Why do you think Linda? If terrorism is that rampant, why would others not want to rid the world of it?

Just like the Iraqis expecting the US to bring them freedom instead of the Iraqis fighting themselves for freedom.

Good point logansdad.....

If you beat your faithful dog, it will still love you and crave any scrap of kindness you occasionally bestow on it, as you are the "alpha" in its "pack"....but, eventually it will turn on you as a matter of survival.

I imagine, as things in Iraq were going, the Iraqis saw so much violence on a daily basis, they became numb and were thankful they were not Saddam's target at that point in time.
