If you go to www.google.com and type in a telephone # including the area code and the hyphens (if the number is listed in the white/yellow pages) , you can get directions via MapQuest to a person's home.

How do you feel about this?

Then to add insult to injury, if you request to have your number unlisted you are charged a monthly fee.!!

Edited to add.. this fee is extortion, plain and simple.. a fee and a charge for a non service!

Yes, I did know that. It's been that way for years now.

But IF you have an unlisted number in your area's phone book....you won't get on all the lists to cross-search for people.

I also resent paying $5.00 a year per phone # to be on the 'don't call' state list.

No..LOL.. I'll just pay the 1.45 a month and grumble and groan about it.. I got one phone bill in today, and just the basic services are 45.00...

I registered with the national do not call list.. it was free.. I don't know if my State has one as well?

LOL - Well....you're getting off cheap if that's all you pay.

We pay $1.50 a month.

On one phone I have a residence line charge of $14.90...BUT at the bottom of the amount owed column...when all the taxes etc are added on it's more than double...@$38.64. No toll calls...no long distance calls...only addition charges I pay for are callwaiting and inside wire maint plan.

It has been a long time since we had a 'list your pet peeve' thread. Maybe this will be the start of one again.

Once again?

Heck, I tried all the conventional places like church, grocery store, Home Depot, K-Mart, 7-11 etc. and so I thought it's time to branch out.

For what it's worth....here's a 2003 AARP article with a link for each state. They recommend you make contact at both the Fed and your state levels.

Some states pay...some don't.

That's been that way for a very long time. I think almost since the beginning of the internet.

Ours is $36.00 no long distance, but call waiting and call forwarding. We also have a cell phone $39.00 with 1000 unlimited minutes. After 9pm and on weekends long distance is free. I like free the best. If we call verizon to verizon the call is also free. Just my luck my sister in law has verizon and lives in Arizona and when that phone rings I know it is her. yuk!!!!!!!!!

What is really better is Yahoo or MSN messinger and you talk free over that.

Wisconsin has a no call list that is also free.

Our snow is even free. Aren't we lucky...

No, never tried internet dating. I do pretty good with my little network of regular stops in several cities that I visit on a regular basis and don't forget them strip clubs. they're probably my biggest and best dating service venue, if you wanna call it that.
---------------------------------------------
I have 3 day weekends free on my cellphone, that's Friday, Saturday and Sunday so consequently I try to save most of my business calls for Fridays.

There's a way to block google from doing this. I did it a long time ago on their page and can't remember how it's done, but I notice it still works. Trying my number just now gets no results.

You can always have your land-line phone disconnected and live with a cell phone. Plenty of people do it.

Google and the phone books don't know about that informaiton (yet).

Libra, you probably have 1000 anytime minutes, and unlimited mobile to mobile, which if you only call another cell phone it is pretty much unlimited. But some say unlimited, but what they mean is on their own network (meaning the other person has to have the same service) and some offer total free mobile to mobile. And what they dont usually tell you is, if you've used your allotted "airtime" 1000 minutes up, you'll find you might just be getting charged for the free mobile to mobile after all. But most people dont use up their whole airtime minutes, so it doesnt usually apply.

I always say, check those cell phone contracts, boy

...!!

Thats not all Google will track:

Search By Number

Parcel tracking IDs, patents and other specialized numbers can be entered into Google's search box for quick access to information about them. For example, typing a FedEx tracking number will return the latest information on your package. Other special search by number types include :
• UPS tracking numbers example search: "1Z9999W99999999999"
• FedEx tracking numbers

example search: "999999999999"
• USPS tracking numbers example search: "9999 9999 9999 9999 9999 99"
• Vehicle ID (VIN) numbers example search: "AAAAA999A9AA99999"
• UPC codes example search: "073333531084"
• Telephone area codes example search: "650"
• Patent numbers example search: "patent 5123123"
Remember to put the word "patent" before your patent number.
• FAA airplane
registration numbers example search: "n199ua"
An airplane's FAA registration number is typically printed on its tail.
• FCC equipment IDs example search: "fcc B4Z-34009-PIR"
Remember to put the word "fcc" before the equipment ID.

Spell Checker

Google's spell checking software automatically looks at your query and checks to see if you are using the most common version of a word's spelling. If it calculates that you're likely to generate more relevant search results with an alternative spelling, it will ask "Did you mean: (more common spelling)?". Clicking on the suggested spelling will launch a Google search for that term. Because Google's spell check is based on occurrences of all words on the Internet, it is able to suggest common spellings for proper nouns (names and places) that might not appear in a standard spell check program or dictionary.

Stock Quotes

To use Google to get stock and mutual fund information, just enter one or more NYSE, NASDAQ, AMEX, or mutual fund ticker symbols, or the name of a corporation traded on one of the stock indices. If Google recognizes your query as a stock or mutual fund, it will return a link that leads directly to stock and mutual fund information from high quality financial information providers.
Stocks

Look for the link for your ticker symbol query (e.g. "SUNW" at the top of your search results. If you search on a company name (e.g. "Sun Microsystems", look for the "Stock Quote:" link on the final line of Google's result for that company's homepage (e.g. www.sun.com).

Travel Information

To see delays and weather conditions at a particular airport, type the airport's three letter code followed by the word "airport." For example, San Francisco International Airport updates can be found by searching for "sfo airport."

Wow! Thanks Bear! That was really informative! I had no idea that you could access so much through google.. Those features are cool..
I started this thread because I was shocked to see how little privacy we have on the internet not to mention security.. but as you have pointed out it isn't all bad..

Classic, the ad's are the links over on the far right column as well as in the return search (i think) so, if you key in sears 1956 motor, it will return numerous diff pages, but on the right hand side probably listed first is sears.com (or other similar bigger sites) and I think if you click any of those, they make their money.
