After a long night of photo editing and glancing up at the TV I have one question....

Why is it that none of the homesellers on Home Hunters seem to have ever seen a single episode of Designed To Sell?

They were just showing a house with amazing hardwood floors thruought but in every room they were covered up with worn and fugly 20 year old sculptured shag carpet. EEEWWW! Pink & Green bathrooms...fully dark wood paneled sun rooms....

Someone should leave a few show tapes in these homes after they tour them.

fenix, is there anything that does not interest you??/ Not trying to be mean, but I just wonder if you ever catch anything on TV and go, nah I'll pass on that....Your interests seem so boundless!!

btw, I have a question for you: do spices lose their flavor/luster after a time? Even if they have not been opened from their original package sealing? I bought an old spice rack which still has spices in it, some unopened and sealed but I am wondering if I should throw out the spices and just keep the bottles to refill??? The opened ones are going out. But you are right about spice prices!!! I went to get marjoram for a recipe and it was like $10.00 a bottle!! Needless to say, that recipe did without the marjoram this time!

Hey classic - Get with the program shag carpet is the latest thing AGAIN now. I shake my head in disbelief about returning to the days of raking the floor.
-------------

I've been watching the different 'home' shows too. When I watch TLC and see shows like 'Clean Sweep' I wonder if all that cleaning out, getting rid of 'stuff' and redecorating is going to have been worth all the 'teams' efforts down the road ...say about 6 months.

On the 'Designed to Sell' show...I am constantly amazed that the homeowners can't see for themselves how either out-dated or messy their own homes are themselves. BUT you'll notice that most of the sellers get thousands more for their homes than their asking price. So...it sure does help.

And I also enjoy watching the 'Mission Organization' show. Good tips for people who need help in that area.

Remember Saddam's bedroom?

Fenix, what I can't stand is when people are looking at the house to buy, they only look at the paint colours and the colours of the kitchen cabinets. No mention is made about the structure, roof, basement, plumbing, electrical, etc... just the colour scheme. That's what makes or breaks the deal.

DB - LOL! I'm sure there is something thzt doesn't interest me... just can't think of what it might be right now I watch the house shows when there is nothing else on since I have to help get the parental house "Sale Ready" and some of the design shows to get ideas for what I want to do with the place I get down south.

As for spices... they do lose their umph after awhile but you can keep them in the freezer help lengthen their life. As for them ones you have - try them out and see. The great thing about spices is that they don't go bad and become poisonous... they just end of as slightly fragrant weeds

I understand your pain on the cost of store spices. I have this recipe for Anise cookies that I love. Not too sugary but just the right touch when you just have to have a little sweet and makes the whole house smell fantastic. Only problem is that it requires a 1/4 cup of ground anise which is one store bought $9 jar. Luckily Anise also has wiccan uses so I was able to get a pound of it from one of the Wicca sellers on ebay shipped for less than the cost of 2 bottles and now I have enough to make them all day every day as my little heart desires.

thanks fenix re the spices. I thought I remembered your post about buying them on ebay when I needed that marjorum. (I was like, damn I am not paying 10 bucks for one spritz of spice when I probably wont use it too again too soon!) Shortly after I saw this spice rack with spices at an estate sale, so i got it, but have no idea of their age or if they're any good or not!! I will try them and see, as you say.

Those house shows are good for tips and ideas, and since your juggling that stuff I guess its good to watch. But I get real cynical of being sucked into this delusion, that I too, just like them, can re-do an entire bathroom in a half hour or something! I usually only watch them so long, if i do stop to watch it!

Did anyone here, besides me, enter in their "Dreamhome Giveaway"? I really like this one, set in Texas not too far from Dallas. Of course we would have to sell it. We could probably build something similar here for 1/10th of the cost.

This year our goal is to move our red raspberries to near the property line and put in an herb garden. I have got to get more aggressive with my beds. My large perennial bed was overrun with weeds on one end this year! I just couldn't seem to get that far. Our vegetable garden is a "raised bed", as are the strawberries. I hope the grapevines we put in last year come back as well.

I did too twig. I decided that if we won...I would live in the boat house...the boys and their families could surely share the house...and we could find a place for my MIL somewhere in that mansion.

It's beautiful. Wonder what the taxes would be on it?

DB - The one thing you have to know when I talk about seeing different shows is that I never sit down and watch TV and do nothing else. I am WAAAAAY too ADD to do that. Last night I was working on editing product pics with the TV on. HGTV just happened to be the least irritating sounding station when I was searching.

It was either that or Hannity and Colmes and after a day of the minutia involved in image editing I just didn't have the patience of humor left to watch Hannity.

HGTV is one of the channels that is one here at our house

The Dream House 2005 is great! Lake Tyler and Tyler TX isn't bad at all!

The only problem with these 'dream homes' and the winners is rarely do any winners keep the house. They usually cannot afford the taxes on it, though this year they said that Lending Tree is giving the winner $250K, that may be for the taxes (but then wouldn't you have a gift tax for the $250K?) this whole taxing and gift tax would make my head spin!

I love that house too Linda! The boat house is gorgeous, my favorite room? is the UTILITY room! LOL I love how they made it so you can use it as a craft room, sewing and all in there.. I would like to take ideas from all there dream homes and incorporoate it into my own dream home!

Beautiful home! You'd need help cleaning it! But I think its not practical or realistic for a family with children, could you see little kids 'flying' off the deck from the third floor bunk room? And the master suite is detached from the house.

nearthesea: speaking of taxes. I was reading the other day about a family outside of Washington (DC, that is,) who were low income and qualified for a habitat for humanity home and after three years in the home, have seen their tax rate skyrocketed taking their mortage payment from some 500.00 a month to nearly 1000.00. I thought that just stunk to the high hills. They said she took on another job, but had some pipes busted she cant afford to get them fixed, and apparantly they cannot get an equity loan or sell the home with these habitat home contracts.

Why would they put her and her family in this home at a level they could afford, and then do that with the taxes??? It just doesnt make any sense to me.

linda- I love the boat house too! I think it's cool that the glass can rise like garage doors to make it "open". But I have way too much stuff to be able to live in it..

near- I love the master suite as well. It's like your very own romantic getaway every night, jacuzzi and all. I agree this is not a practical home if you have small children. The "bunk" area is cute, but I also think it's dangerous for the small ones it's intended for. Imo, small ones should be on the first floor, especially since this is so open on the upper levels.

I could do without the pool, or should I say the extras with the pool. Just give me a whirlpool at the end....so relaxing!
