A lot of "Disposable" income being spent...

Nevada casinos win $11 billion from gamblers in fiscal 2005

By ADAM GOLDMAN
Associated Press Writer

LAS VEGAS (AP) -- Nevada casinos pocketed a record $11 billion from gamblers last fiscal year, an 8.8 increase over the previous year that was helped by the opening of Wynn Las Vegas and the Strip's continuing appeal to tourists, according to a state report released Thursday.

Casinos also won $954.2 million from gamblers in June - an 11.7 percent gain over the same month in 2004.

"June is historically a pretty quiet month," said Frank Streshley, a research analyst with the state Gaming Control Board. "The opening of Wynn in April is still growing the market, which is a good sign. It's not cannibalizing the market. The demand for Las Vegas has gone through the roof."

Streshley said this is the state's 11th consecutive monthly record for winnings.

The win was the amount left in casino coffers after gamblers wagered $12.5 billion during June, including $10.6 billion on slots and $1.9 billion on table games.

For the 2005 fiscal year that ended June 30, the slot win spiked 9.7 percent and table game win increased 7. 1 percent.

"Win" is a gross figure, with no operating costs or other expenses deducted. And it's casino revenue only - separate from hotel, restaurant or bar revenues generated by the resorts.

The state collected $55.2 million in percentage fees based on the June win, up 1.3 percent compared with the fees collected for the same month in 2004.

Las Vegas Strip resorts accounted for $489.6 million of the June win, up 16.4 percent. Downtown Las Vegas was down 2.9 percent, while North Las Vegas was up 16.9 percent and the Boulder Strip was up 7.1 percent.

Deutsche Bank gambling analyst Marc Falcone wrote in a Thursday investor's note that Strip casinos showed no signs of slowing down.

"We are encouraged by the strong table volume trends witnessed on the LV Strip as we continue through the seasonally soft summer months," Falcone said. "We anticipate operators with LV Strip exposure ... to capitalize on what we believe will be continued solid trends."

In June, northern Nevada, Reno casinos were up 0.6 percent. Sparks casinos were up 4 percent and Stateline casinos on Tahoe's south shore were up 1.3 percent.

Carson City area casinos were up 11.7 percent - the region's 26th consecutive monthly increase.

In June, games that produced the most win included blackjack at $103.2 million, up 14.9 percent; craps at $46.6 million, up 48.3 percent; and baccarat at $33.9 million, down 18.6 percent.

Slot revenues included $226.1 million from multidenomination slots, up 51.8 percent. Dollar slots won $92.4 million, down 10.4 percent; quarter slots won $132.1 million, down 13.7 percent; and nickel slots won $70.9 million, down 33.4 percent.

Great thinking from the Republicans. The economy getting better because the Casinos are making more money. Now that is a great indicator. I wonder if that is what Greenspan uses to raise interest rates.

Half of the people going to casinos or those that play the lottery are the ones who can bearly support themseleves. They use their last bit of income to gamble in the hopes of winning it big.

And if they don't have enough self-control to not spend money they don't have....that's the fault of the republicans. LOL

You've been told more than one by more than one poster that your comprehension skills are showing....so now you copy-cat that and use it on me.

GET original, logan.

It was YOU who said, without any verification that it's at ALL true;

Half of the people going to casinos or those that play the lottery are the ones who can bearly support themseleves. They use their last bit of income to gamble in the hopes of winning it big.

Got proof of that? Want the government to step in and handle their money for them?

Got proof of that?

WHO PLAYS THE LOTTERY AND WHAT ARE ITS SOCIAL CONSEQUENCES?

Critics contend that the lottery preys on the poor and uneducated, though lottery advocates dispute this contention vigorously. The Center found that the weight of the evidence shows that lottery play is spread fairly evenly across almost all income groups and that the poor do not participate in lotteries out of proportion to their percentage of the population. However, the poor do spend a higher proportion of their incomes on lottery tickets than do players who earn more.
The Center says proponents and opponents mix up these measures of lottery participation when debating this issue. One measure is the participation rate, or the percentage in a group such as the poor who buy lottery tickets in a given period of time. A second measure is the average expenditure by members of the group, and a third is the prevalence of heavy players in the group.
Education levels, however, do affect how much lottery participants spend. The 1999 Report to the National Gambling Impact Study Commission states that participation rates do not vary much by education, but that the amount of money spent by players drops sharply as education levels increase. High school dropouts who play the
lottery are by far the biggest spenders. African Americans who play lotteries spend more than other racial groups.
Other socioeconomic groups that play heavily include males, Catholics, Hispanics, laborers, and the middle-aged.

Very good logan - but ugh...one problem.

The Center found that the weight of the evidence shows that lottery play is spread fairly evenly across almost all income groups and that the poor do not participate in lotteries out of proportion to their percentage of the population.

then goes on with all their "However's"

But get real...no one is FORCING anyone to play. The republican's haven't been the only group who have supported bringing in the lotto's/gambling in all the different states they're in.

You're taking a gambling problem for some...and blaming it on republicans. Which is NUTS, logan....pure insanity.

These are grown people who are CHOOSING to spend their money however they wish. AND it is improving the economy of many states.

Matter of fact.... Las Vegas is the fastest growning town in the US.
And so bear's article about Nevada proves that people are more and more enjoying gambling as a form of entertainment.

Get a clue for once.

I don't know what the heck you are reading Linda. Please show me where I ever tried to blame someone's gambling problem on either the Democrats or the Republicans. You are the one that is trying to make this in to a political issue, just like you do with everything else.

If anyone is insane Linda, it is you because you are not reading what is written. You try to twist everything to fit your own agenda.

hmmmmm YOU brought political parties up FIRST, logan. YOU brought up republicans FIRST, logan.

You are the one that is trying to make this in to a political issue, just like you do with everything else.

So, I see it differently....all bear did was post an article about people using their money to gamble. It is growing Las Vegas....it does help with the economy. But YOU....started in with trying to bash it as the was 'republicans think'.....not I....not bear....YOU.

Las Vegas is the largest city in Nevada, United States, the largest city founded in the 20th century, and a major vacation, shopping, and gambling destination. In the 2000 census, the city reported a population of 478,434 [1].

The Census Bureau's official population estimate as of 2003 was 518,313. Las Vegas has been the county seat of Clark County since its formation in 1909 [2].

Recent figures place the population for the Las Vegas metropolitan area at around 1,950,000 people (2005 estimate [3]), the fastest growing in the United States.
