Beware! On Friday, I deposited $500 in eBay payments into my Charter One business account and $400+ into my job's Charter One business account. Got home from work and checked the accounts online. Both deposits were there. Before placing an order with my suppliers, I checked the balances on the accounts again. Both deposits disappeared.

I called customer service and they insisted I made no deposits. The receipts I had sitting in front of me said otherwise. So, since my branch is open on Sunday, I went up there. The first thing I get told is that this happens to a lot of their customers. Then comes the real kicker - they now have to "investigate" it and will give me a "provisional" credit on Tuesday. What that means is, no checks will bounce, but I can't touch any of the money either. Saying I was pizzed off is putting it mildly. Most of what I deposited was cash and the checks that I deposited were already cleared (I checked with the people who gave me checks). So, they have as I called it, stolen almost $1,000.

Apparently, the teller made a mistake when entering both deposits. I should have known because all of the tellers were playing around and not really paying too much attention to anything.

So, when you made a deposit especially at Charter One, CHECK to make sure you actually got that deposit credited to your account. Once this mess is straightened out, I'm pulling all four of my accounts. My BF is pulling his. He has over $40,000 in his money market account. I'm also talking to the partners at work today to close out the office business account. In all, they've lost almost $50,000 in deposits because of a screw-up they expect me to pay the price for.

What price are you having to pay Cheryl? Sounds like they made a mistake, are investigating to correct it.

Everyone is not as honest as you come across, so to just hand over money on a claim is not good business. Are you saying that the partners have lost $50,000 or the bank?

I also would not bank there again.

Ron

I took a copy of the deposit receipt and a copy of the canceled check to the bank. The check was one that I had deposited and it was already cleared from the other person's account. They even went into the other person's account and saw that it was indeed canceled. Thank goodness you can get copies of these things on line. The bank wasn't out any money. I was.

What gets me is if you bounce a check, they keep adding charges to it until it's paid off. If they "lose" your money, you're supposed to sit back and wait for them to investigate.

I went to the branch where I had originally made the deposit. Got the same response. I will get a provisional credit on Tuesday.
Like she said, they have my money it's just not in my account. There was a "system glitch". More like an operator glitch.

$50,000 is a combined amount with what we have in the bank right now. What I meant was they stand to lose us as depositors. We were also looking into refinancing with them. They've lost that as well.

Once this is all straightened out, I'm opening an account elsewhere. I'm running out of trustworthy banks. First Merit is out. They're even worse.

And, yes, I am honest, almost to a fault when it comes to things like this. I even refund money to buyers if I charge them even $1 too much for shipping. CVS neglected to charge me for one candy bar yesterday. I went back into the store and paid for it. I don't need the bad karma!

It turned out rather funny! On Monday, the deposit mysteriously showed up. The next day, a credit memo for $500 turned up in my account. So, there is now $500 too much in my account. I'm sitting back to see how long it takes them to figure out what they've done. So far, it's been in there for six days. If they don't correct it by Friday, I'll again go to the bank and tell them to take their money back. I look for my account to be totally right by this time next year. LOL!
