I didn't get a chance to watch the opening ceremonies but turned it on this morning and have been watching football that isn't my kind of football. It looks more like soccer to me. But Hey, I'm from "you know where" and when I suggested that our school switch to soccer from football (when the powers that be were complaining about not having enough kids for football and the expense) you would have thought I had committed a grievious sin.

Anyway, away with the election and all of the other pressing matters. I'm geared for the Olympics! Two weeks of true humanity. How about you?

Looking forward to them myself, calamity... and you're right, we could use a little harmony.

Hey Kcat,

I thought I would start something for Maui.
Been switching between the Olympics and Home Shopping. It's exotic gem day. Whoopee!

Actually, I'm enjoying the disharmony in my own way.

I did catch the last half of the opening ceremonies last night and they were great. The lighting of the torch or cauldron as Bob Costas kept calling it is hard to describe. They had a young girl singing and her voice was beautiful.

I always enjoy watching the Olympics. So far, this one has been great: wonderful opening ceremony (especially liked the Australian women medalists bringing in torch to celebrate 100th anniversary of women in the games), some thrilling close competitions in Triathalon & Swimming, and the struggles by various teams in Men's Gymnastics.

Bunicula,
I caught part of the men's gymnastics late last night. The Chinese sure have a lot of pressure on them, don't they? They are great, though even if they aren't in first place and how about the American kid who stuck that landing---Awesome!

Eventer,
I saw a smidgen of the dressage last night, too.

I was really impressed with how scrappy the S. Korean Women's Basketball team was.

Loving it,

calamity49: I was even *More* impressed by the American kid who dislocated his forefinger during warm-up, had it pulled back into place & then went on to perform so impressively!

I think one of the most inspiring things I have ever seen is the swim be Eric Moussambani!! He comes from a tiny African country, Equitorial Guinea, which was one of the countries that got into the Olympics under a special clause that allowed athletes from poor undeveloped to compete. He was one of 4 from his country to come to the Games. He has only been swimming for *9 months*, had no coach & so tried to train himself, and had only a tiny hotel swimming pool (much smaller than ones found in backyards) to practice in--and only when no guests were around. He swam in the 100 meter freestyle, and he had never even swum that far before! There were 3 entered for the race, but the other two swimmers jumped the gun & were disqualified. So Moussambani swam it all by himself. It was obvious that he has no real swimming skills...but he kept on going. It didn't look like he would even make it down the length of the pool for the *first* 50 meters. Then the crowd got behind him. Clapping. Cheering. I've got to tell you, I had tears in my eyes when he finally made it to the end. It took him one minute & fifty-two seconds. Talk about bravery! I don't think very many people would have had the guts to do what he did. Today a sportscaster said that Moussamani had been given new swim outfit by Speedo (he was wearing a very old-fashioned one with drawstring). They also said that he is trying to earn money to go to college so that he can help his people. I hope someone starts a fund as I would be happy to contribute. This guy deserves to go far.

Durn bunnicula,
I missed that. I think I saw a small thing on him that was coming up but had to do something right after the blurb. I would have had tears in my eyes, too. For me that's what the Olympics are all about.

I hope they show it again.

bunnicula...
I saw that too, and was very touched...brought to mind the runner from the last O. Games who pulled a hamstring on the last stretch of the race, and his father came OUT of the stands to help him across the finish line!
Been some GREAT stories so far, I only wish NBC would spend less time on background, and MORE on the games!

Hi Calamity Seems we're never around posting at the same time lately. I've missed most of the olympics but did get the chance to see some of the gymnastics and swimming competition last night. It's so amazing to see what a finely-tuned body can be capable of... - and then there's mine... all worn out. If I walk a mile I think I've really done something. Sure feel old watching these youngsters perform.

Yorequest,
LOL, I know what you mean.

Mybid,
Good to see you. I have to say I haven't seen as much of them as I would like. I had to tape them this evening. I got my OUTHOUSE FINALLY and will experiment with putting a picture on of it when I get a chance. Anyway bak to the Olympics. Each 4 years I can't get over the body forms. I'm not trying to be sexist or do a sexual harrassment thing but the forms of their bodies are just beautiful especially when they are doing their areas of expertise. First it was the gymnastics then the platform diving and now my favorite, track. They are all in such peak condition and many are doing their thing with injuries that it makes me feel like I've been ridden hard and put up wet and foundered.

I have to brag, we had a kid from Mason City here in Central IL. who won the silver in archery. They sure do have strange looking bows anymore. While they were explaining what all of that stuff was I had to wonder what ole D. Boone would think of it.

Anyway, I hope tomorrow I will get a chance to spend the day and night groving on it all though I too wish they would show more venues and quit doing all the background stuff and I really miss Carl Lewis.

Capriole

Congrats on the 3 day eventing gold!

I've tried to watch the equestrian on nbc but it seems I just miss it each time the have it covered - they have a wonderful website though so I've been keeping myself 'up to date' that way. I did get to see a few highlites (x-country spills) on the news last night - not really what I wanted to see

Wish I could have seen the Dressage - oh well - I 'm still looking forward to the Jumping. I hope that our Canadian team can put in some clean rounds after their 'upset' that happened last week.

I've noticed the Google search site has been having funny kangaroos adorning its logo over the last week or so, and tonight I saw that they've collected them. Cute:

My favorite is the diver.

Pareau,
Those are cute. Have to wonder though why a kangeroo needs a poll to vault with? LOL!
