I have looked at websites about Hummers, but no mention of whether one would actually take up residence in a manmade house built just for them. The reason I ask is, I have this goofy little hummer who is definetly a doofus bird. Hes all messed up...crooked beak so bad that his tongue hangs out and wont go all the way in...one eye gone and fleshed over. Very small (smaller than norm), but he likes to hang out at the feeder while I read my book in the lounge chair. Hes only about 2 feet over my head, slurping up the sugar water, and slobbering it on my arm as he slurps with that drooling tongue. Poor little guy. It doesnt get too cold here, but I worry about him when it DOES get colder. Thought about making him his own house, but dont know if he will stay in it. He gets chased off by the other hummer birds, but always comes back when Im out there reading (the others are too afraid to come eat when Im that close). I named him "myguy" because when I see him, I murmur "hi my guy" and he just looks at me with that one eye and then continues on slurping.

So, does anyone know if a hummer will "nest" in a manmade birdhouse?

Hiya Maui,

He probably already has a nest somewhere, dontcha think? Cute name, "myguy" -- just make sure he gets ample turns at the feeder.

Hiya Pat....oh yes, he gets his turn often, lol. Hes "myguy"...and the others cant pick on him 'cause I wont let them. I do hope he has a nest somewhere...but might go buy him one and put it next to the branch that has the feeder on it (same tree my treefrog hangs out in, croaking merrily away).

hahaha, Maui, you're sweet. Can't hurt to try the manmade birdhouse, but don't be surprised if the frogs make a brothel out of it.

(At the risk of incurring Manny's wrath...Seals and Crofts, pretty song for a pretty lady)

Oh hummingbird, mankind was waiting for you to come flying along.
Heavenly songbird, we were so wrong. We've harmed you.
Oh hummingbird, lend us your wings. Let us soar in the atmosphere of Abha.
Lift us up to the heaven of holiness, oh source of our being, oh hummingbird.

Hummingbird don't fly away, fly away. Hummingbird don't fly away, fly away.
In you I've found a fragrance. I'll love you 'til I die.
I just love you, love you, love you. I don't even know the reason why.
Hummingbird don't fly away, fly away. Hummingbird don't fly away, fly away.
The sweetness of your nectar has drawn my like a fly.
I just love you, love you, love you. I don't even know the reason why. Now,
Hummingbird don't fly away, fly away. Hummingbird don't fly away, fly away.

Haven't you noticed the days somehow keep getting longer.
And the spirit voices linger in us all.
Haven't you noticed the rays, the spirit sun in stronger
And a new day is dawning on us all.

Hummingbird don't fly away, fly away. Hummingbird don't fly away, fly away.
The draught of understanding, wisdom peace and love is ours.
Hummingbird don't fly away, fly away. Hummingbird don't fly away, fly away...

Love ya, Mauigirl...

D.

I suck at telling someone how to do that stuff...you should know Z...you hosted my pics before I found AW, lol. Wonder where Barry is...hes the resident HOW TO man

Hubby brought me a hummer last year...it was another doofus bird. It was starving to death I think, because it was so stupid, it was trying to suck nectar from the geraniums. He found it laying on the sidewalk behind the house, still alive but not moving. He came in the house, with this teeny tiny bird laying in his huge hands and said "here, Doc...fix it". So I put a tablespoon of sugar in my palm, got it wet with water and laid its beak in it. This long ol tongue comes whipping out and it starts lapping it up...and Im thinking "um...this bird is gonna get a rush big time, so maybe I should stand outside"...no sooner than I stepped out the back slider door, that bird was perched on my pinky finger and lapping and lapping, then it hit him that he was a HUMAN HAND and ZOOOOmmmm....he flew off. Good thing I went outside, eh? Never did see it hovering around geraniums again, so Im assuming he was ok. This goofy one I adopted now...hes just pathetic. But I like him. He keeps me company when I lay outside tanning, and reading. Even though I get drooled on when hes drinking

Maui, here is an answer to your question from Bird Watcher's Digest--scroll down to the middle of the page, and you'll see it.

Myguy sounds like a funny character. The Ratso Rizzo of hummingbirds. Are you sure he's not from NYC?
