"How dare you suggest that we, in the freest nation on earth, live in tyranny? How dare you call yourselves patriots and heroes? I say to you, all of you, there is nothing patriotic about hating your country or pretending that you can love your country but despise your government. There is nothing heroic about turning your back on America or ignoring your own responsibilities. If you want to preserve your own freedom, you must stand up for the freedom of others with whom you disagree, but you also must stand up for the rule of law. You cannot have one without other."

Sure it still applies, in context. If you read the whole speech, Clinton was speaking directly to members of "patriot" militias who at the time were threatening direct civil disobedience against the government.

Now why did I know the meaning would be lost on the defeatist left.

Boy BearPorn... you and Linduh really need an education in English. Now you and your "defeatist" comments. Do you even know what that means???

Defeatists give up and follow those who rule... nothing defeatist about us lefties. We are here to fight and uphold the Constitution rather than trample and p!ss on it like you uneducated lemmings do.

Here is a clue BearPorn.... before you go off the deep end and insist immigrants learn English, you should do it first. Put down the Busch beer can and pick up a dictionary.

The meaning bear old man, can only be discerned by taking the quote in it's entire context. You quoted it out of context in a pretty lame attempt to put some other meaning of your own on it. Like I said before, President Clinton was speaking directly to and about so called patriot militias within the US. He was specifically not speaking to legitimate political dissenters, as much as you'd like to believe otherwise.

A couple of inaugural comments by John F. Kennedy, the most liberal president of the U.S. have been similarly mangled...taken out of context and given a new, wingnut meaning.

Rush Limbaugh generated the deceptive spin of Clinton's words and that of course was lapped up without question by wingers across the internet and dutifully delivered here by unsuspecting Bear.

Rush is an idiot. He should talk about taking words out of context. After his last fiasco he should just keep his mouth shut.

Such trying times to be a liberal and have your own words used against you, keep trying to crawfish out of it.

"Such trying times to be a liberal and have your own words used against you, keep trying to crawfish out of it."

You've got that ass backwards as usual. You are attempting to take the words of liberals and lie about the author's intent.

There is no way on this board that you can "crawfish" out of that deceit.

Whatever does "crawfish out of it" mean?

Helen's right bear. Go read the whole speech. You'll note that Clinton prefaced the remarks you've quoted with:

It is with this in mind that I would like to say something to the paramilitary groups and to others who believe the greatest threat to America comes not from terrorists from within our country or beyond our borders, but from our own government.

He was speaking directly to "patriot" militias, the ones who at the time of the speech had recently been found to be complicit in the OK. City bombing. The ones who buy their weapons at gun shows. I'm sure you know who I'm talking about. Not that you'd ever do business with such low life, nosiree.

I know I've said this to you before pal, but it bears repeating:

Nice try!

With the Google Queen AWOL, it seems like Bear is trying to take her place. However like usual he is not up to the challenge.

I know I've said this to you before pal, but it bears repeating: Nice try!

That is what happens when Bear gets his news stories from papers like the World Daily Nut.

I figure this particular bit of "news" was something he had forwarded to him from, as Colin would say, "a friend".
