In another thread, there was a discussion regarding taxing the oil companies. As if the high gas prices and the crisis was their fault, and the only way to bring the situation under control was by taxing the companies.
Consider this article - "Creating A $200 Billion US Credit For High Oil Prices"

While I hate the thought of drilling for oil in protected areas, I can't really see any way around it. However, while were here complaining about $4/gallon gasoline, our friends in the UK are paying the US equivalent of $8+/gallon for that same gasoline. The high cost of gasoline isn't a US problem, it's a world problem. As long as we are sticking our noses into the Middle East, the price of oil is going to increase. OPEC is mad as Hell at Bush and, IMHO, this is part of the payback. We've alienated a good portion of the oil producing world, including Argentina. I don't know about anyone else here, but my mother always told me to not stick my nose where it doesn't belong or it's liable to get chopped off. IOW, MYOB.
We were warned in the 1970's about using up the Earth's resources and most shrugged it off. Maybe we should have played closer attention!
In the meantime, I've filled the bicycle tires with air and have brushed the cobwebs off. Hey, it's great exercise.

I guess I don't understand why we are giving huge tax breaks to oil companies who have been delivering increasing dividends to their shareholders for the past 25 years, during a time when we are putting our grandchildren in debt to pay for a war to protect the oil companies' interests. http://seekingalpha.com/article/73551-exxon-mobil-dividend-aristocrat

pixiamom - I don't understand it either. I'm all for capitalism, but I think you have to draw a line somewhere when it becomes detrimental to the greater good. I take heart in that if we ever fall into another depression, I'll survive because I know full-well how to get by on little to nothing. Will the oil company execs or their fat shareholders? Or, will they be the ones throwing themselves off 10 story buildings? You get back what you give. If you give nothing, you get nothing. Karma.
