There are many causes for this type of behavior in an elderly person. Alzheimer's is one. There are other forms of dementia or she could have had a mini-stroke. Medical evaluation is needed to determine the cause. I am the caregiver for my aunt, who has Alzheimer's. She has many of the symptoms you describe--memory loss, not wanting to bathe or wash, etc. I don't know if she lives alone, but she should not be. She is not capable of caring for herself.

Sounds more like dementia. My mother died from complications due to Alzheimer's and it's a bit more complicated and takes more to diagnose. In fact, they can't be sure you even have it until they do an autopsy when you die. It usually starts at an earlier age than 90. My best friend's mother has dementia and your description sounds like her.
With Alzheimer's you will forget how to swallow so eating becomes nearly impossible. The doctors call it failure to thrive. You will forget how to sleep, how to walk and how to talk. Your cognitive skills disappear. You can remember what happened 50 years ago, but what happened one hour ago is lost. It's a cruel disease to both the victim and their family.

"The EBay model is very Republican in its essence -- it's about making a small number of rules and getting out of the way while not overtaxing the community," she said.
