There are a handful of first ladies I truly admire. Strong women, able to maintain an equal partnership with their powerful husbands. In recent history: Eleanor Roosevelt, Betty Ford, Hillary (I admire her abilities and dedication to the Democratic party, but doubt if I could have put up with Bill's infidelities). I'm ready to add Michelle Obama to the list. OK- she isn't the first lady yet. On the 60 minute interview tonight, she portrayed intellect and strength. Her partnership with Barrack is definitely as an equal.

I like your list. We could add Abigail Adams to that, I think. And I agree that M. Obama is going to be a Very Impressive first lady. I can hardly wait!

I agree with your list, and would add one more:

I wasn't in tune with their religion and the administration had its issues, but I always had a warm spot in my heart for Rosalynn Carter.

I predict that the Obama family will be one that we're very proud of 4 (and then 8) years from now.

Empress Dowager probably overqualifies, but she does a good job 'barfing',so we have to consider her as well.
Belching too!

hwahwa,
You really are immature. Or is it that you are a sore loser? Either way, grow up.

I am still trying to figure out which one "Empress Dowager" is ... Nancy Reagan, Betty Ford, Pat Nixon, Jackie O', Eleanor Roosevelt? (By definition, a "dowager" is a widow). It seems that many first ladies outlived their husbands. I can't see any of them belching or barfing.

Interesting niel - thanks for the links.

That Empress Dowager certainly takes the cake as most power hungry First Lady.

She was largely conservative during her rule and refused reform of the political system.

Sounds like the kind of leader hwahwa wants! If you don't like America...you can always leave.

Michelle and Barack last night impressed me as a couple who not only love each other but who see each other as equals in the partnership, that is any marriage. She will be a remarkable First Lady and after the last 8 years of ---- we deserve one.The best and only thing Laura Bush has done for me are the Christmas specials with HG TV. LOVE those white trees the first year! AND damn she didn't even do the work or think it up she just strolled through... kinda like her husband "comfortably numb!"

Thanks to Pink Floyd for the quote!

The 60 Minutes interview was wonderful. They portrayed themselves as ordinary Americans, no different than any one of us. It's nice to have a young family in the White House again. I remember the Kennedy's and America's love of that young family.

hwahwa - Your party has had the White House for the last eight years. I hope you can be proud of the shape that party has left this country. Maybe you should at least give Obama a chance.

Whitman said she and McCain share a philosophy of scaling back the role of government. a point of view partly shaped by her EBay experience. "The EBay model is very Republican in its essence -- it's about making a small number of rules and getting out of the way while not overtaxing the community," she said.

Loved the interview! Down to earth folks. They have worked hard for everything they have. Good for them! Only in America! God I love this country!!

Michelle is at the top of my list of 1st Ladies. Spunky & smart just like my wife.
