I had stopped visiting the Rt a few years ago because it had become such a cess pool but this subject of the oct mom has me asking some serious questions about the state of the mental climate in our country.
someone please tell me what I missed in the pulled thread because I just do not understand how the heck a woman with no money, no job, no husband and six kids was able to talk someone into giving her invitro. And while you are at it, tell me why Family Services is not stepping in and getting these kids into homes whith a sane parent. This has to be one of the most blatant cases of irresponsibility that I have ever heard of.
This crazy woman and her doctors should be locked away for morals violations, child abuse and taking advantage of every support system in this country!

I'm with Neglus on this one. I think the woman knew exactly what she was doing. That's not to say the doctor's shouldn't be punished. They should. They were negligent. This woman shouldn't get a dime from anyone.
What is it with her Angelina Jolie look?

I believe mostly crazy, but greedy in the sense that she thinks that "giving of herself" to the kids is sufficient to make the rest of the world support all 15 of them.
I guess I mean entitled more than greedy, but the two characteristics are not unrelated.
LtRay, as far as what you missed, it was reasonable dialogue with some disagreements but nothing uncivil... then dadofstickboy showed up and started racist nonsense about our President.

obviously the woman needs some counseling and has some mental issues that caused this...
what I think is really sad is that it takes someone to have THAT many kids for people to finally get up in arms over this issue.
its stupid really because in the end - are these kids any worse off than your typical low-income family with 5-7 kids (with or without both parents) ?
probably not, but nobody cares anymore that humans just can't stop themselves from procreating endlessly without thinking about the overpopulation of the planet and how their offspring are supposed to make it when there's 4 times the population there is now (and when there's less than 1/4th of the natural resources we have now.) - worlds longest run on sentence?
really, having more than 1 or 2 kids period is a selfish thoughtless act, IMHO.
another one of the biggest problems the planet Earth faces is that all the WRONG people are the ones popping out dozens of kids per family while those with half a brain aren't because they know better. unfortunately that means in 20 years there is going to be a ratio of idiots to the somewhat-educated of about 20:1
its scary to think of who will be in charge of this planet when im elderly (old isn't elderly right?) ;p

Vickie, I agree with most of what you said but I think we do not have to wait 20 years. We are already dealing with all those issues and I think in the next 5 years it will all come to head. We cannot continue to support those who refuse to try and support themselves.
This lady is just a prime example of our current society in general. We have masses who do not understand (or even want to understand) the implications of their actions and the burden it creates for others.
Over-population, poverty and wasted resources occur because too people get too self centered, catering to their own wants and refusing to look at the larger impact.
I am totally frustrated that people are not starting to wake up and use their brains.
I could only stomach a few minutes of this woman's interview yesterday but the bit I did catch was that she was starting to realize that her need to have a big family stemmed from her need to feel loved because she was an only child and her Mom did not show her enough attention.
Give me a break! I am fed up with all the people who think they were abused because they did not get everything they wanted. Some of us know what real abuse is and I guess my tolerance level for selfish whiners is extremely low.
I understand compassion for others but I draw the line when it comes to people who chose to be stupid.
Cheryl, her Angelina Jolie look freaked me out too. I am thinking she is an Angelina wanna be. Perhaps if she was make millions so many of us would not be so upet about this. But then again, at least Angelina had the decency to adopt children that needed a better life and can provide for the ones that she choses to have.

Maybe she expects that some will chip in and build her a big house like on a reality show and she'll get tons of gifts. Scary thought - if she does get lots of help and it's shown nationwide and spawns into some freak show at the kids' expense, how many others will try to do the same thing?

I think she definitely has psych.issues, but also think she is soaking up the attention and hoping to make lots of money. Not so sure that is the reason she is doing this,but it is the icing on her cake. Her need to have so many children borders on OCD, and indeed I have read that some psychologists feel this has an OCD component. Sadly, it seems to me she sort of loses interest in the children after she gives birth to them. She also does not seem to care how much of a hardship she is placing on her parents.

I am also concerned that three of her older children (50%) have disabilities and are receiving government assistance. What kind of disabilities? If genetic, then the fertility doc should be shot! Who knows what kind of physical problems the octuplets will have because of their prematurity and if there is some kind of genetic problem as well, they will need beaucoups $$$.

What get's me about this is when a mom and a dad get a divorce, and the mom is found to be nuts like this lady, she still gets the kids. Yes, I know she was never married and there is no dad. Just pointing out the double standard.

I have heard one of the six has autism. Don't know about the others. I missed the dateline tonight, my daughter watched it and pointed out that she had her nails done (french manicure). Also, I have now read that Kaiser is asking California to pay the hospital bill as she did not have insurance.

Actually she was married but the husband is not the father of any of the children, they were all by the same fertility clinic. On the news last night they said the doctor has a very poor success rate, except for her. So I suppose he thought all 6 of them would not 'take' and then surprise two of them split so there are 2 sets of twins in that lot. The doc has sold his story to CBS, can't wait to see that. The whole thing is just so very sad, I feel sorry for those poor children.

I suspect this nut case thought she would get corporate sponsorship for having a litter but I just read an article that she has had to go into hiding because people are now making death threats. So much for her "Big Day".

I lived in New Orleans back in the 1990s and I saw plenty of cases where generations of welfare mothers live together and raise their kids together.
A girl can be a mother at 13 and by 26 she is a grandma and she can still bear children into her 40s,she and her extended family live together,eat together and watch TV together.
After Katrina,some families moved to Houston,they cant all fit in one apt or one house,they need multiple dwelling units.
BTW,Mr Obama at some time in his life was raised by his mother and she used food stamps,so why pick on this poor lady?

Octomom had 6 children which she was financially incapable of caring for neccesitating public aid and yet spent what money she did have with the sole intention of creating more children which she will not be able to feed or house without additional assitance from the public in order to enhance her own selfish needs rather than use those funds to enhance the lives of the children she already had.

In response to the original question... I must be a cynic because my first thought was that this woman was chasing endorsements, sponsorships and a reality show. Then I watched her interviews and listened as new reports came out and... I don't think she's that smart or cunning afterall.
If manipulating the publics curiosity regarding multiple births such as hers had really been her plan, then as soon as she knew that she had a litter on board, she would have hired a PR rep and an agent and start shopping around for a deal. There is already a reality show about a huge family but what there hasn't been is one that watches a large family adjusting to its very own oncoming natural distaster. Seeing the parents and children trying to wrap their minds around what is coming at them, prepare for it, then the whole birth process (complete with a bonus surprise 8th baby... can't you see it.. doc delivers number 7, then "Oh my god" end of episode. What ever will the surprise be... tune in next week...). You could then watch the development of the children, behind the scenes of the inevitable media circus...watch as more come home.. watch mom go shopping for a bus to fit the whole brood in and laugh as we watch her go for the commercial drivers license that transporting her family will require...
See now that would have been a saleable show and a smart cunning person would have known it. And we haven't even touched on the companies that would be falling all over themselves to donate diapers, formula, clothes, furniture, etc in order to get weekly product placement on the show.
The fact that there was no PR rep until she started getting all of the negative press, tells me she's just flat out crazy as a loon.
That or I spent too much time in the entertainment industry.

Hwa - I was apparently not in the same LaLa land you were in since she did not have six children, she had two and the second was born in Indonesia not the United States.
Considering the fact that you have so little correct information on her reproductive habits, I'm thinking you have even less regarding her financial state while living in Indonesia with a husband employed by a major oil company.
Maybe you were thinking of his fathers children.. oh but wait.. he fathered 8, not 6.

Kiara - I will probably be around for awhile, at least until summer. I have a bunch of shows coming up then so things get a bit crazy getting merch ready for them and then recovering but they are a blast and I'm really looking forward to them.
I'm surprised to see so many have left. I hear that Linda went off the deep end and got banned. Doesn't really shock me much. She was teetering on the brink of lucid posting last time I was around. Too bad. I remember when she was actually a fun debate.

Heard a 911 audio tape on the news today from Ms. Suleman. It took place while she was still pregnant with the octuplets. On the tape she is screaming and hysterical because she could not find one of her children. You could hear children in the background. She kept screaming over and over "I am going to kill myself" and the 911 operator told her to get control and stop saying that in front of her other children. she was also yelling at one child-"why didn't you tell me sooner." Turns out the kid went for a walk with his nanny. Now, I know it is very upsetting when your child can't be found, but she sounded so out of control it was frightening (for her children.)

Looks like I won't be around quite as much as I thought I would... on a lark I applied for the only graphics job offered here in town for the past 3 months or so. Figured with all the low priced insta-artists being churned out by the local Barbazon School of Graphic (be an artist or just look like one) I didn't have much of a chance but I interviewed yesterday and got the call yesterday afternoon they apparently canceled the rest of the scheduled interviews and hired me. Can you say RELIEF?!!
