I know that when you make a post or reply to a posting that when you CAPITALIZE all your letters it is considered SHOUTING, but what exactly is it considered when you post a response to someone and you make their i.d. in bold, is this also considered shouting?

Dunno why others do it, but I bold names when I'm directly responding to someone's post. Bolding makes it easier to pick the name outta the crowd, so to speak.

yellowstone,

Bolding is usually used for emphasis, and many members bold the ID of the person to whom they are directing their comment, as Shadowcat mentioned.

Hope this helps.

pattaylor, could'nt that emphasis be missconstrued as shouting.

Hypothetical example; pattaylor I totally disagree with you, as opposed to; pattaylor I totally disagree with you?

Do you see what I mean? I've used the bolding of someones name on several occasions and i've seen my name bolded before also and i've never really known if it was a form of shouting or not.

yellowstone,

Since sometime before I came aboard, AuctionWatch members have routinely addressed one another by bolding the IDs to draw attention to their posts. So I suppose that by common use, it has become an accepted practice.

But I see your point.

Pat

Yellowstone --

Truly, in this forum, bolding is not considered shouting, and is only used for the pupose of emphasizing.

With so many different users participating in each thread, the bolding is sometimes necessary for the purpose of following the discussion and sub-discussions.

Yellowstone, I bold a user's ID as an expression of respect.

Ok, thanks for the clarification. I just thought i'd mention it because I really was clueless on this.

From here on out i'll bold away comfortably, knowing that i'm not offending anyone

Bolding was a sign or great respect in ancient China.

PatTaylor, if Bolding is to draw attention to the poster being posted to, then isn't that poster who bolds posting to the poster, and NOT the message?

Bolding is prolly against the rules then.

Aren't we supposed to post to the message and not the message poster?

Bolding is wrong!

Isn't bolding considered rude in some remote regions of The Netherlands?

Bolding should be down right illegal!

Kelly,

You mean bowing. n traditional Chinese cultures, bowing is respectful, but bolding is insulting and barbaric.

Kelly,

You're right though. The message should be bolded while responding, but not the poster of the message, in order to stay within the spirit and letter of the of the CGs.

Whoops, did I inadvertently open up a can of worms here?

Edited to correct the spelling only because krs pointed it out.
