Missouri Governor Mel Carnahan, his son (the pilot), and his campaign advisor were killed in a plane crash last night.
The small plane went down in stormy weather in Jefferson County, Missouri, about 25 miles south of St. Louis. There were no survivors.

Wow. I didn't know that. I've been a Missourian for three years. I didn't have the TV on last night and went to bed early. I am wondering if the schools and everything will be closed today. Sad.

I heard about this on the radio all day. I thought they should have allowed more time for a tribute to him tonight before the debates. I think the entire notice of him took less than a minute... he deserved more than that, imo.

I heard that he was running for re-election and it is too late to have anyone else run in his party (I can't remember if he is a Dem. or a Rep.) so the person who was running against him now has no opponent. How does that work?

I think the so called tributes to him by both candidates were nothing more than an attempt to evoke "warm fuzzies" from the listeners. I'm not sure how they could have handled it to make it different though. Using the death of three people in an attempt to make yourself look good just didn't set well with me.

MaLady - My friend said that they leave his name on the ballot and you can vote for him, but if he wins, then "they" can appoint someone. They are free to appoint the other candidate if they want. That is all I know about it.
