Yesterday I downloaded software from Bonzi to boost my internet connection. Now I can't access my scanner. I get an message: "scanner is being accessed by another application."
If I go into My Computer the scanner icon is there and when I click on it, it says: no scanner found, and then: no SCSI host adaptors found.
I have not gotten an answer from Bonzi and I can't do any auctions without my scanner. This sounds like something serious to me. I am clueless about computers.
Can someone give me a direction to start in or do I have to get a technician to come?

Bonzi drove me to near insanity. I almost took a twelve gauge to him!!

You will probably have to delete the driver and the software for your scanner and then reinstall it. If it is a Hewlett Packard scanner (and I'm guessing that it is), you will likely need to remove the SCSI card from your PC, re-install the scanner software, then re-install the SCSI card and scanner w/cable. This has been my experience with HP scanners with the SCSI interface. Perhaps someone else can help???

Edited for speeeling.

By the way, most of the internet "speed-up" software utilities available cause more problems than they're worth IMO.

I guess I should have asked before I decided to do this.

helnjoe...

This won't help now, but it the future it will save you. Buy GoBack. It's wonderful. Takes you back in time on your hard drive...before you installed the mess...or any screwup that happened.

Just as I suspected. You can try this yourself if you feel up to it, but my guess is that you will need a Technician's assistance. But first try removing the Bonzi software and see if the problem still persists. Maybe it will, maybe it won't...

toke: will this work? My husband just said to go and buy a new computer. I was going to ask if anyone had an opinion about which are the best ones!

Abingdon Computers, of course! Just kidding... (not really. lol) Seriously, if you prefer a name brand, you can't beat a Gateway, the machine OR the company. Dell is also top-notch...

I would strongly recommend against buying a computer off of eBay. You're better off buying one at a local store where you can go in and raise heck in front of a hundred other customers if there is a problem. It will be solved in a jiffy...

GoBack is great!!! But it won't help you in this instance... It has to be installed prior to the problem...

helnjoe...

GoBack is a program to install on ANY computer. Here's a link to a thread that will explain:

Hi...

I had this problem with my HP scanner recently. This is the text of the email I received:

Thank you for contacting Hewlett-Packard's Customer Care.

Scanner is Being Accessed by Another Application

The drivers that Windows 98 need to have running in the background are STIMON and HPSJVXD. Hit CTRL + ALT + DELETE on your keyboard, do you see these files?

If either one these files are missing,

1. Go to start run MSCONFIG, click OK.
2. Click on the Startup tab across the top.
3. A list with several programs with check marks will appear.
4. Locate Still Image Monitor and place a check mark next to it.
5. Locate HP Scan Monitor and place a check mark next to it.
(This step is NOT necessary if you have a Scanjet 4200C and/or 3300C.)
6. Select APPLY and OK.
7. Restart the PC.
8. Attempt Scanning.

If these files are not listed in MSCONFIG, do the following:

1. If stimon and hpsjvxd (except the 4200C and 3300C) are missing, they
need to be extracted from the Windows 98 CD-ROM into the C:\Windows\System director (this can be done with the Windows 98 System
File Checker).
2. Reboot the computer once all missing files have been replaced.

These files are compressed on the Win 98 CD Rom. Follow these instructions to extract them.

1. Go to Start - Run - type in SFC in the Open field.
2. Select Extract One File from Installation Disk.
3. Type in Name of File below: stimon.exe
4. Click Start.
5. Under Restore From, type in D:\WIN98 (substitute D w/ the drive letter for your cd rom). If you do not have a Win 98 cd rom and you purchased your computer with Win 98 pre installed as a full operating system, type in C:\windows\options\cabs in the Restore From field.
6. Under Save In, type in C:\Windows\System\
7. Click OK. Choose OK, again.
8. Repeat this process extracting hpsjvxd.exe and hpsjvxd.vxd (except the 4200C and 3300C).
9. Restart your computer.

If these files do appear and are checked in MSCONFIG,

1. Disconnect the scanners power and usb cables.
2. Boot to safe mode. (Go to Start Run MSCONFIG, click OK Select the Advance Button, place a check mark next to Enable Startup Menu, click OK, click OK click yes to restart PC.)
3. From the Windows 98 Startup Menu, choose Safe Mode and press Enter on your keyboard.
4. Right click on the My Computer icon, select properties, choose device manager tab.
5. Under Imaging Devices, remove the HP Scanjet Scanner.
6. Do the same under Other and/or Unknown Devices. Close Device Manager.
7. Go to Start Run MSCONFIG, click OK Select the Advance Button, remove the check mark next to Enable Startup Menu, click OK, click OK click yes to restart PC.
8. Reconnect scanners usb and power cables.
9. Windows will automatically find new hardware and prompt for the Win 98 CD Rom.
10. IMPORTANT: Follow instructions on screen. Windows must sucessfully extract the drivers from the CD rom at this point. You may have to browse to the D:\WIN98 folder (D is substituted with your cd roms drive letter) or to the C:\windows\options\cabs folder.

The bolded part was all that applied to me and it worked like a charm. I included everything, in case your needs are different.

One little disclaimer: play around in safe mode at your own risk! Good luck!

Sorry about the freezeup... I'm serious about the "buying local" thing, although I don't tell everyone that for obvious reasons...

You don't want to run Go Back on an older computer. It is a resource hog and will slow down anything less than about a PII 400 with 64 mb ram. You also need a very large hard drive for it to run correctly.

Try uninstalling the speed boost program, and reboot and see if the helps.

Helen, you're operating under Windows 95, I assume? Ignore all the "98s", pretend they say "95" and it should work.

If you want a new computer I would check out gateway, I bought one a couple months ago, the system itself is great the only problem I have had is that My monitors keep going out, So far they have sent me 4 ( the 4th one arrived today) also sent a new video card just incase something was wrong with the old one, from the time you call with a problem it takes about 4 days for a new part to arrive , if you need other help they will send someone to your house no charge as long as your computer is still under warranty,

Echoing the good words about Gateway. We are on our second desktop system from them, a PII 400 that is a little over two years old. I just got a portable system from them about 2 weeks ago, a Solo 9300. We've had some problems, a bad cd rom that they replaced quickly, and I think we had one bad monitor as well. Their tech support has always been very helpful too. I love my portable, and have had no reasons to call for help on it.

Our first GW, a P 133 that we later upgraded to a 200. It is still chugging away for my sister in law.

Oh, and akt, if the monitors you are having trouble with are from the EV series, you might want to consider upgrading to a VX. There are known problems with the less expensive monitors. I would say, if this new one still has trouble, tell GW you expect them to send you a different model. Going through 4 is a couple too many. Be firm, polite, etc, but hold your ground.

Gawd!I feel like a dinosaur. I looked at the Dell and Gateway websites and in the four years that I've had this computer things have changed so much I have no idea what they are talking about.

Does anyone have an opinion about the Dell refurbished computers? I'm asking first and buying later.

Hmmm. I'm sure this is blasphemy, but I've been very happy with the computer I had made for me at a local shop. I told them what I wanted in it...they did it, and it was cheap. I've had it over 2 years now, and it's been great. All generic parts, Win 98...no extra programs loaded. Cheap, and exactly what I wanted.

The best thing has been the service. They always answer the phone...no tolls, no wait. I had a bad power supply...took my tower to them...was back home in an hour...good to go. They're great. And I don't even have to get mad and rave at them...

Both Dell and GW sell "refurbished" systems. The amount of time you have to return the system if there is a problem is much less than the normal 30 days. Personally, we've never been happy with those terms, but I do have a friend who got one from Dell and was happy with it. When we have configured a system to price it, the refurbished ones that they offered either didn't save much or were too outdated, or just didn't have the options we would want. My hubby tends to be very picky about sound cards and video cards etc. I think we are using our 3rd video card in a 2 year old computer.

Like Toke, I got my PC from a local computer place. I work with computer people, so I got good references for this shop. It cost much less than if I bought an equivalent name brand PC. Going on 3 years without a problem. (Except for accidentally drowning my keyboard recently.) If you know any good computer folks, you might check this out for an option and see if they have any local shop they'd recommend.
Good Luck!
