My Grandmother made the best dang chili they eva waz. She was the head chef at the state hospital for 25 years, so she got alot of practice cooking. She also made biscochito's and tortilla's that were really good.

My Mom's stew and dumplings, spagetti, beef and pork roast, my mouth is watering just thinking about all that good food.

My grandmother made norwegian cookies that were pressed into cookie molds...rich, buttery melt-in-your-mouth wonderful! They were a christmas tradition.

My Mom makes the best apple and lemon meringue pie (s) I have ever tasted. She is also famous for her cheese biscuits.

My Uncle is not a cook...but one dish he does make, is grilled duck--he marinates it overnight in some concoction and it is positively gourmet!

About the best thing my mother used to cook was Noodles Italiano. That was the name on the box...

If anyone knows if this stuff is still available please let me know, it would be nice to experience some of Mom's home cooking again.

Food : Ginger marmalade . Made with big chunks of chinese stem ginger . Great on crumpets.
In fact I miss stem ginger ; came in faux Chinese-shaped jars , in heavy syrup . And crystalized ginger ...stem ginger pounded flat and rolled in coarse sugar .
A Victorian recipe gingerbread made with stem ginger , treacle and golden syrup , that stayed moist and improved with age when stored in an old airtight biscuit ( cookie )tin for weeks( that would now fetch a great price on ebay.. )

Especially in winter , I miss Ginger wine . A concoction with a consistency between cream sherry and liqueur , very warm and spicy .

LOL @ Barry(please be kind to moms - we try )Barris Mom's home cooking.

Reminded me of something our youngest son told a neighbor of ours. The neighbor was alone, and we often took him a dinner plate so he could enjoy a 'home cooked' meal.
Well, everytime our son took him my swedish meatball with noodle plate, he'd rave about how that was his favorite. Finally our son let my secret out of the bag. He told him it was only hamburger and a seasoning package mix. Well.....it DID taste great.

Ooops - Forgot what I was going to post.

Anything my grandmother cooked was wonderful. She made the best home made egg noodles I've ever tasted.

Her pies were to die for, and she made two each day. My grandparents were farmers, and so all the food was picked fresh from the vegetable garden, trees, bushes, fresh chicken, etc. That may have helped everything taste so good...it was fresh.

Nothing like fresh beans, peas, corn, potatoes taken from the ground and immediately cooked for dinner (which was lunch). Supper was the evening meal. She'd go out in the morning and pick the wild berries from the bushes, or apples from the trees and make those pies. Her cream pie came from the milk the cows gave.

And her chicken and dumplings....oh my god!!! No wonder everyone loved coming to her house to eat.

My Mother made a concoction with ground beef, rice and a can of those onion rings. That was my favorite and she still makes it for me when I come home to visit. I have no idea how she makes it and don't want to know either! hehe

She also makes the very best turkey stuffing. Nothing fancy...just cut up mixed rolls, celery, onions, sausage, eggs & spices. I can come close, but never quite on target. There is never any leftover stuffing after dinner.

Buitoni used to have these things called Toaster Pizza. They were so good and came in a Red and White box.

Frozen Jello Pudding Pops were awesome.

Nabisco Chocolate Snaps. Now those cookies were to die for. They came in a little square box. They had chocolate chip in a red box and Vanilla Wafers in a blue one, but oh what I'd give for a box of Chocolate Snaps. They were so good, why did they take them away?

Not Kerryann on eBay

I miss my mother's fried chicken, biscuits and gravy. My nanny made the best perogias. She stuffed them with mashed potatoes and onions.

Fried burritos aka "chimichangas". Taco meat, beans, rolled up in flour tortillas and deep fried.

Yum.

I know how to make them, but I won't. Too fattening/greasy... but I do miss them!

*sigh*

Those Morton frozen glazed donuts (eight to a box, I think) that would come out of the oven on a "special" Saturday morning every so often. I know Morton still makes cinnamon buns, but I can't find the donuts anywhere (and being 6 months pregnant, when I get the craving for a piping hot glazed donut, it makes me all the more upset...).

And I miss the chocolate snaps in the little animal-cracker-sized boxes (with the cat face drawn over the cookie -- remember these?). Those and the corresponding chocolate chip cookies.

Wah.

My grandmother made the best macaroni with tomato sauce and bacon. Spaghetti sauce sure isn't the same. Also, she made the best cakes. I have inherited her cake baking, and I can make a mean chocolate cake with carmel icing (her and my speciality)

As for bought food, I loved chocolate bubblegum and chips that looked and tasted like bacon.

monkeyhouse, your reply reminds me of a pastry (if you could call it that), it was more like a twinkie type of thing and about the same size and 2 to a package. they were called "Gonzitos" and what thay consisted of was white cake with white cream filling along with raspberry jelly on top and the whole thing covered in chocolate. Boy what I would give just to have one more Gonzito, I haven't had or seen them since I was about 15 or 16 years old.

yellowstone: were these like raspberry Zingers, but covered in chocolate? mmmmmm... That reminds me... has anyone seen those chocolate-covered Twinkies (what were they called? Choco-diles?) in the last few years?

My grandma made a peanut butter fudge...and I was too stupid to get the recipe. I've tried various recipes for it, but none are ever right.

And Sara Lee used to make a frozen banana cake with frosting on it. I haven't seen that for years! Every so often, I get an urge for a piece of that....

Yes monkeyhouse, they were kinda like raspberry zingers except that the raspberry jelly was only on top and it was more like a jelly rather than like a coconut mixed jelly like zingers have and they were covered entirely in chocolate.

I like raspberry zingers in a bowl with vanilla ice cream. SuzyQ's and/or banana flips are great with ice cream as well.

Oh by the way I too remember the Morton frozen glazed donuts. My grandmother used to buy them and I can still remember how good they tasted fresh out of the oven. As a possible subsitute, you may want to try just heating up regular glazed donuts from D & D.

Space Sticks!!!

mmmm...i can still taste 'em...peanut butter was the best.

do you remember? they were about 6 inches long, and about a quarter inch around and they were kinda chewy...oh, yum. haven't had 'em in about 30 years though.

oh, and those little orange/vanilla ice cream cups that came with the little wooden spoon, that i got up at the corner store.

almost as good were the chocolate fudge ones, they were a little taller with the fudge layered in the vanilla ice cream...

ah, gotta go now...must have ice cream!!!
