I don't know, maybe it's just me. In recent years I have discovered three foods that I absolutely adored as a child and which now turn my stomach if I so much as try to take a bite.

These are foods that for some reason or another I didn't eat for years. Thinking on them with nostalgia I decided to give them a try--and found I *could not* stomach them anymore.

Spinach: when I was little I drove my family nuts because I wanted canned spinach all the time. Now it just seems like a slimy mess. And, no, I wasn't all that big a fan of Popeye cartoons.

Tomato Soup: I *loved* this stuff. Campbell's Tomato Soup. Had to be Campbells. It was the only soup I ever wanted when I was little. A few years ago, I decided to try it again on a cold rainy day--what anticipation as it heated. Smelled delicious! Then I tried to eat it--one spoonful went into my mouth and my stomach began to roil. Bravely swallowed, but the ensuing revolt made me just pour the rest down the sink. What a disappointment.

Bananas: Hadn't eaten one in years, but decided they might be nice for a quick snack on the go--easy to eat while driving to work, etc. Got a beautiful bunch at the store--perfect, with not a single black speck (which always denote a disgusting bruised spot underneath. These were absolutely perfect bananas, I tell you. Driving to work, I began to peel one of these perfect beauties. The banana smell hit and my stomach said "uh oh." As I raised it to my lips my stomach issued a warning: "don't you eat that thing." I ignored this and took a bite. Slimy. Mushy. *Banana* My stomach bucked like a bronco & issued dire warnings against swallowing. I did. Big mistake--my stomach hadn't been fooling around. No more nanners for me. Ever.

A few years ago I decided I really needed to have my favorite childhood food, spaghettios. Now if that isn't the most revolting food on the planet, I don't know what is.

Oh, yes I do. When I had my 1st child my Mom got some Vienna Sausages. Man, just the thought of those makes me want to hurl. Unfotunately, my son loved them, so I had to endure his getting them everytime we went to Gram's. Boy am I glad he decided he doesn't like those anymore.

This upset my stomach to even think about. UGH.

edited 'cause going from html to ubb is really confusing.

Black licorice.

Canned burritos. (!)

Edited to say... oh wait, those were tamales! Still, yuck.

Orange Juice. I used to have it every morning. Now I can't stand the stuff.

Luckily I have always loved V8 Juice and Tomato Juice. Now I drink about 16 ounces of either V8 or Tomato Juice daily.

Barry (NEVER liked Strawberry milkshakes......) Barris

I used to mix Kool Aid and ice cream! Nasty! What in the world was I thinking??

I loved those canned tamales too. I remember them being so goooood! So I bought a can at the grocery store not too long ago. It was a greasy, way-too-spicy mess! Into the trash they went.

Can't handle pepperoni anymore, even though I love it! Gives me heartburn.

I think nanners taste best when they're just starting to get black spots.

I pretty much eat most of the foods I adored as a child, they just don't have the same taste and flavor they used to. What I always loved, and ate a lot of, were fresh fruits and vegetables.

The ones we buy today don't taste anything like the ones I loved as a child. Examples: peaches, pears, oranges, watermelon, cantaloupes, tomatoes and potatoes. When I was young, every one of the fruits I ate was perfectly ripened and sweet....the flavors were so scrumptious. Now if it looks like a tomato (etc) I still eat it but, unless it's homegrown, the taste just isn't there. I can remember having a pear (peach, etc) for a snack and the sweet pulp and juice running down my arm. I looked forward to eating them. Now when I buy them, I cross my fingers and 'hope' they'll have some flavor.

Just about any animal product, except yogurt. But I like the nice tart kind, not all sweetened

Linda K, I grow herbs for cooking. My oldest had a young friend over, went out and got some parsley, washed it, and tried to give some to her friend. Her friend got this look of horror on her face and said "Food comes from the store!"

Melons of any kind. If I eat them, I can't breathe.

Really.

When I was pregnant with younger kitten, I developed an allergy to all melons. My OB doc said it would go away after the kitten was born. He turned 18 last month and I still can't eat melons.

Even one bite causes a reaction. So-since I prefer breathing easily to eating melons, I skip the melons.

Oh, and Franco American Spaghetti. I loved that stuff as a kid, craved it when I was pregnant with elder kitten, then tried it when I was pregnant with younger kitten. The smell hit me and I spent the next half hour paying homage to the porcelain throne. Haven't been able to touch the stuff since.

Well, this is sort of along the same lines. Certain foods that don't AGREE with me anymore, if you know what I mean. I can't TOUCH Mexican food anymore. The old digestive system ain't what she used to be!

Any sort of greasy foods fried in fat. I used to eat all sorts of fried foods and I used to think that I had an iron stomach, that I could take allmost anything, greasy hamburgers and french fries were a favorite.

toomanycomics, if more people only knew what chicken mcnugets were made out of they wouldn't eat them either. They contain a fish by-product called "serimi", serimi, I found out is all the trash fish that are caught in trolling nets. The fish trollers, rather than throwing them back into the sea grind them up guts and all and sell the mulch to fastfood packing plants among other places.

Coca-Cola I drank that all my life--but a couple of years ago I started getting sharp pains in my stomach whenever I drank one (especially a canned coke). I switched over to Dr. Pepper and haven't had any more problems.

LOL, how funny..

I used to LOVE spinach too (canned) and got teased for it, if you can believe that. I can now only tolerated it in certain dishes, but never ever straight from the can (with bacon crumbles and bacon grease!) like my mom used to fix it. Blech.

Ditto the vienna sausages. I used to adore them. When I had my firstborn my mom would buy them as a toddler food and I thought "Gawd, how did I EVER stomach those things!?" Ewwwww.

Also milk. I used to consume about a 1/2 gallon a day. I hit my teens and developed a distaste for it. I now only drink it rarely when I'm having Oreos or brownies, and ONLY when I can afford the all-natural, antibiotic organic milk from the health food store. Since I learned exactly what is in regular grocery store cow's milk I just cannot hack it. I also don't give it to my kids which horrifies my mom. Well, my 8 yo drinks it but only occasionally, and my DH keeps it in the house for cooking. I don't refuse to let my kids have it, but I'm no milk pusher either.

I noticed pregnancy did a number on my favorite foods. I used to love Tabouleh salad. Took one whiff of it in my 1st pregnancy and haven't been able to touch it since then, 9 years ago. Same with pizza and fried chicken. In general I'm just a lot more sensitive to things since I had kids; strong smells make me ill (even "pleasant" ones like cologne or bath stuff), ALL chemicals now give me a headache (incense, bleach, carpet deodorizer, air freshener, Pine-sol, whatever), amusement park rides I used to love now make me hurl, and gory movies (another thing I used to adore) make me squeeze my eyes shut. My mom said the same things happened to her after having children. Weird.

Oysters, cooked or raw. Used to be able to eat them, no problem. Now cooked ones give me a stomach ache, raw ones make me violently ill, kinda like food poisoning.

you remember easy-bake ovens? Well, I used to rip open the little packages and eat the cake and brownie mixes right out of the bag, like spit is all it takes to complete the recipe.

I still eat ketchup on my eggs and ice in my milk, though.

Oysters do me in too. Raw or cooked, even a tiny bite and I get really sick. First time it happened I thought it was intestinal flu. Took 2 more tries before I figured out it was the oysters.

when i was in grade school my best friend was 2 years older & i thought she just walked on water...i would do anything she did. well, she thought mixing orange juice and coca cola was just delicious so i did it too...my whole family thought i was really cracked...but y'know, i remembering it being kinda yummy (or maybe i just convinced myself that it was 'cause Sue liked it).

now the thought of it is just unbearable! can't imagine what i was thinking! looking back, i wonder if Sue even liked it or whether she was just taking advantage of me!

ever since I had the flu last year, EGGS...
not boiled, not scrambled, not egg salad...
I just get SO nauseous after a few bites...
but fried eggs are still alright...
then there's chocolate...
ever since menopause hit a few years ago, the mere smell of chocolate makes me GAG...
that is, except when I menstruate and then I CRAVE it...

debtrek~you probably did not have the flu. My guess is that you had salmonella which sensitized you to egg protein. Flu & salmonella are impossible to distinguish with out lad data.

The reason you crave chocolate when you menstruate is because you are magnesium deficient.
Add 250 mg per day.

thanx for the input...
I'll bet you're right about the salmonella...it's not like that "flu" was the first bout I'd ever had before and this aversion was awfully sudden...
as for the magnesium, I'll try it next time, although my periods are so irregular, it's hard to track sometimes...

debtrek~ take 250 mg magnesium with your calcium every day. It will banish any PMS. If you don't take calcium you should, just before bed.

I am quite certain that you had salmonella, even slightly undercooked eggs can cause it.

Be on the lookout for a new pasteurized egg product, safe for raw egg recipes!

dejavu...

about the eggs...
I always cook my eggs completely, but at the time this happened, I worked in a kitchen in a nursing home...
I imagine I picked it up there and since, as you said, it's difficult to tell the difference between it and the flu, I could have contracted it more than once and never knew it...
I no longer work in that kitchen...
I tried that all egg white/egg substitute years ago and it was alright, but it required ALOT of seasoning to make it palatable...

as for the vitamin supplements you've suggested, I must confess that I used to take a multi-vitamin AND something called DHEA (which really helped with the PMS), but for whatever reason got out of the habit...

guess I better get back to it...

thanx again for your input...
VERY APPRECIATED...
