Regarding the wretched paper I was having trouble with...I received an 'A'.
I took several people's advice and argued that he hadn't supported his thesis with enough evidence and what evidence he did present was presented in such a way to make it difficult to grasp. It was supposed to be a 7-10 page paper, but I only came up with 6 pages, so I was worried (I am terrible at "padding" school papers). I think it helped that I gave example after example of where the author had fallen short. So thank you to those who encouraged that I approach the assignment from a different POV.
A funny aside...before handing back the papers, she said that several people had written, literally, 10 page "this book is stupid," type litanies, and there were a couple students who simply handed in a "letter" to explain why they couldn't do the assignment. I can just imagine what her teacher evaluations are gonna look like.
At least I know what book I'm going to give my MIL for Christmas.
