Ok, on last week's episode, my daughter's dog, Lauren, was having female problems. The vet put her on hormones, and now she won't leave our male black Lab alone. He's a head and shoulders taller than she is, and she stands on her hind legs and scratches at his sides like she wants to jump up. Then, she goes under him and - how shall I say - nudges his manhood in order to entice him. I've never had a female dog, so I'm totally disgusted. Well, our male, Riley, decided to give it a whirl, and keep in mind Lauren is about 5" high at the shoulder and weighs 6 lbs., and Riley is a small lab who weighs 65 lbs. Picture it... So my grandson yells "MEEMAW, Riley is pooping on Lauren!!". So I run in and try to break up the fracas, and Riley takes off outside through the doggie door, slips on the icy deck, and tears his toenail back to the quick. Then he comes running in and is running all over our white carpeting like a mad dog, leaving blood stains everywhere. I'm about to ship them all off on a slow boat to China. Meanwhile, back at the ranch, Lauren has five more days of hormone pills... Stay tuned for bulletins as they happen.

Ah Yes. Just one of the many good reasons to spay them while they are young! LOL!

I say that but have a female spayed chihuahua
that tries to get "things" going with my male neutered chi. All the time. What a hussy!

I'm not sure how the mechanics was worked out, but my Mom had a German Shepard who's paramour was her poodle.
The offspring was really something. Long bodied, shortlegged with long curly hair.

Muriel...

Oh no! I didn't even think that Lauren could be fertile. What did the vet say about that??? I can't imagine that she would be, but...

For heavens sake don't let your Lab impregnate her...she's way too small!

HCQ: Lauren was rescued from owners who were keeping her in an outside kennel in South Carolina with a Rottweiler. When my daughter got her, she was already 8 years old and the vet thought that the surgery would be risky. She is twelve now and no longer goes into full heat - that's why the vet has her on hormones. Apparently if the dog doesn't go into full heat, everything "backs up" and her uterus can rupture. YIPES! In her prime, Lauren was a "show dog", but somewhere along the line a divorce happened and no one wanted her. Go figure.

Also, I forgot to mention that Riley is neutered, so he's shooting blanks. Everyone is sleeping now and I'm going to enjoy the peace and quiet.

Muriel~ you better hope Riley is neutered.......he could be a *rig* with an undescended testicle that still produces hormone.Happens all the time in horses with similar results as your recent escapade. I used to own a horse like that who weighed 1500 pounds. How would you like to put a leash on that?

Ask your vet for the *pill* for dogs that may stabilize her hormone levels...w/out the risk of surgery.

Hi Muriel yea that is one of the side effects (not one of my problems however lol) of hormones. When I was an AHT we spayed many dogs eight years old and older. There is only a slightly higher risk due to the anesthetic. If the complete blood work-up doesn't show anything real abnormal, especially kidney problems, they usually go ahead. Also, animals are put on heart monitors during surgery.

I didn't want to say this before but... what exactly is a backed up uterus? I have never heard this term used. Is he talking about metritis (inflammation of the uterus)? The worse problem with an unspayed female is an infection, called pyometra (pus in the uterus)which is a real emergency.Chronic metritis or pyometra requires removal of uterus and ovaries. Did he do a blood cell count for a diagnosis?

Choco: Your description of the uterus is correct. The vet said that since Lauren never bleeds, all of that gets backed up in the uterus and it gets infected. Kinda yucky, eh? But imagine how poor Lauren must feel! She is doing much better now. No crying, no howling, etc. But she still won't leave poor Riley alone. By the way, his broken nail is better, too. He took care of it. Licked it to death until it fell off. I'm glad that's not how humans take care of injuries!
