I am having a Salt Bagel craving. Here on the west coast, practically no one can make a good bagel. They are fluffy like Kaiser rolls, not chewy and dense. Maybe I can trade someone some Northwest item, (sorry no stock in Microsoft)...for some bagels.

Ah the heartland! Here in Michigan we have Starbucks and Caribu coffee and little independants and not only the real thing Bagels but Deli food like corned beef sandwhiches an inch and a half hi with fresh rye bread - latkes and blintzs - soup with kreplech. It is kind of like an overlap zone from both coasts. The only thing I can't get is a real california quality salad.
The bagels will be stale even with overnight but if you are toasting them they are good enough.

Yum. Do they have Salt Bagels where you live? I mostly like them toasted. Heck, maybe I'll just move to Michigan!

Try livin in Oklahoma.
Bagels? Frozen section of the grocery store.
Seafood? Best in town is Long John Silvers.
Hummus? Whats that ya say mam? Yer gonna havta get that at the nursery I think.
Korean food? Good Mexican? Chinese? Indian? 1 1/2 hour drive.
We have this BBQ place here that is supposed to be so good people fly in to our little airport to eat there. Well, I wouldnt know, I walked in with my girls one day, sat down, picked up a menu and got right back up and left. I'm not paying anyone that much for a plate of smoked meat.
Cheese and deli meats? Walmart Walmart Walmart. Where head cheese and blood sausage are shunned. Where peperoni is made by Jimmy Dean.
You'd think I could at least go to a good ol Mom n Pops around here for a plate of calf fries n white gravy wouldnt ya? Well I can't dang it. Have to go to Kansas for that.

Good Chinese food is all I miss about NYC.
Wo Hops.
Won ton soup that has more than just wontons and chicken broth, and isn't cooked to mush.
Chinese red Bar-B-Q pork in a sweet roll.
Duck noodles.
Pot stickers with dipping sauce.
Also Pancit and Lumpia at the street festivals. Deep-fat fried calzone. And yes, bagels which are boiled and then baked. With lox. (sigh)

Mistyfisch...I love salt bagels, too, and agree good bagels (like pizza) is hard to find in California. We do have a local place called "Garden State Bagels" and they really are from Jersey. One of the owners went to school with my cousin. They are the most authentic around.
bunnicula...my husband has family in La Verne. They live in a canyon area and we're waiting to hear if they are having any trouble with the rain.

victoria...we used to go to Hung Ying's Rice Shop in Chinatown. They made the best mussels in blackbean & garlic sauce. Now I'm going to be thinking about them all day!

Mistyfisch....I live in NY, home of the chewy bagels (& really great pizza too!)....I'd be happy to ship you some honest-to-goodness NY bagels....wrapping them in sealed plastic ziploc bags would keep them fresh for a couple of days (long enough for priority mail to get to ya) BUT the salt bagels always develop moisture, so even if they were wrapped separately, I'm not sure if they would arrive mold free???....Of course the other varieties (poppy seed, seasame, galic, onion, blueberry, egg, cin/raisin etc) don't have that problem....But if your hankerin' is strong enough & you wanna take the chance....you can email me at [email protected] & we can work out a plan!....

I live in NYC and even here the bagels aren't the ones I remember growing up. Those were extremely chewy (unless very fresh) and had a large hole in the center. A true bagel should make your gums bleed. Now they are very large and doughy filled with preservatives and too soft. I once came across a place on the lower east side where some old guy was still making them the old way.

What exactly is a "salt bagel"? Is that like a pretzel?
I live in LA County and don't recall seeing any.
On the other hand, I can walk to Mexican, Indian, Middle Eastern, Thai, Japanese, Chinese, Korean, French and Italian restaurants.
I can drive five minutes and have Indonesian or Czech or Peruvian.
I can drive half an hour for Cuban, Basque or Hungarian (three of my favorites).
But I REALLY miss Sam Woh's on Washington Street in San Francisco (Chinatown). Every single day, I have a craving for one of their goodies. Can someone in the Bay area send me a pork noodle roll Express?

I forgot Starbucks and McDonald's are worldwide now. I guess someday I will have to open my own Bagel Shop! But for now, Kaiser rolls.

Surfing TV the other day I hit on the tour of some rock star's house, where he proudly showed off his Starbucks coffee bar. Seems he got tired of having to drive down for a cup of latte, so he "had them set one up" in his living room. The "setup" consisted of an espresso machine, a coffee grinder, and sacks of Starbucks coffee.
Pretty funny. I've got the same "setup" - Starbucks by the pound has been available at Wal-Mart for at least a year. Guess I'm living large, huh.
