We decided to get cable internet access this past Christmas as it sounded so great! Having discovered Napster, wanting a faster way to download sounded like a dream to me!
It hasn't even been a full month and we have had more problems than I had in the 3 years I was with my last ISP. Constant down times with e-mail and webspace that we can't access or hadn't been able to access since we signed up. I spoke with an agent about the webspace last week and was told it was a server problem and would be worked on. Last night, I called and was told no work has even been started on it! And then we had no e-mail access last night and today, it works like its checking mail but I have none coming into my box. I even sent three of my four email addresses test emails from a hotmail account and they never arrived. This is not good when I sell and buy on eBay and know that people could be sending me e-mails that are floating off somewhere in outer space and not reaching me!
Has anyone else been having problems with their cable internet? I am looking to dump it and return to my former ISP. At least I have e-mail and webspace access and for less money!

I've had cable (@home) for over a year now. We've had a few problems but overall I love it. If you can get on one that has the "kinks" worked out it's really great.
Not paranoid anywhere else but here!

I have cable at work. Pay big bucks for it. It went down more the first two weeks than Prodigy went down the entire 3 years I had it. So I Bitc***. I moaned. I whined.
Then they got rid of Roadrunner and went with a new company. Costs a little bit more but no problems. They told me too many problems with Roadrunner.

It all depends on the area you're in whether cable or DSL is any good.
I have had Roadrunner for 4 years with no problems. A lot of the cable problems come from the cable system that was in place before cable internet was offered. The area I am in had a dual directional cable tv system for over 20 years, and this system meshed perfectly with the internet. In other areas, the operator is cutting corners on upgrading the system and it shows.

Locally, I'm too far from a station for DSL, and I know the cable system is going to be patchwork at best as the lines are very old.
Anyone with any expience in satellite modems?

Satellite is fast uploading, but some systems actually require you to download through a phone line.
Therefore, your email will go out very fast, but incoming goes the speed of the phone line.

I think it all depends on where you live. My old ISP was fine until I moved then it stopped moving. I got roadrunner last month and haven't had any downtime or real problems with it. It isn't as fast as I hoped but it's a lot faster than my old dial up. I love napster too but you have to look at what speed the file you want is being downloaded from. I try to find people with DSL or cable.

When using Napster, look at the Ping rates. They may have a slow connection, but if their ping rate is low, under 200, then the upload speed will be good. Don't just assume that if they have a cable or dsl connection you'll get the file faster. I've had files scream in from users connected with a 28.8 modem, but a really low ping rate.
Our service with Road Runner is basically good. It's not as fast as it used to be, as more users are added the bandwidth shrinks. It is however much faster than the dial up was. Mail and newsgroups are OK, not great. Their news server really chomps.

We've had a cable modem for quite some time now, and it has been a GREAT experience. Hardly any down time, no other problems of any sort either. I know I'm going to miss it when we move.

One note about Napster.
The speed shown is not alwasys the speed of the other persons connection. Some people upgrade the connection but never change it in the setup and others leave it low to try to encourage you to d/l from somebody else. Ever wonder how a 28.8 connection d/ls at the same speed as a 56k?

Wow, I'm surprised to hear the complaints about Cable internet. I have Roadrunner and have had it for close to a year now and have never had a problem (not counting that power surge that basically blew up my last computer). But I'm really happy with my cable internet. I've heard good and bad things about it - I think it depends on where you are. Some people have great service, others don't. I guess I'm one of the lucky ones. I would never go back to dial up again!

Actually reamond you have that backwards....
The UPLINK to the satellite is on a phone line (at least until now), and the download was via Sat....
All that is changed thanks to Hughes....check out http://www.direcpc.com
This is what my tax refund is buying...up to 400K download (faster than a T1 connection!) AND the requests from your unit are sent back up to the Sat...NO MORE LAND LINES OF ANY KIND...YEEEEE Haaaaahhahahahaaaaaaa!!!!!!
Since we already have DirecTv, I just need to replace the dish on the same standard...line it up...run a little cable, and Voila!!!

the ones that are someone else's fault.

Thought I would update. Since my complaint here, things HAVE improved. Our e-mail seems to be working fine *fingers crossed*. However, we still do not have any webspace. My sister lives near us and has cable modem as well and she also cannot access webspace. Our cable company told us it was a server problem but again, have not fixed it. I am going to bring this up when my bill arrives.
Other than that, when things ARE working, I do love the cable. It's fast and I know we will never return to dial-up again. I was just disappointed in what problems we had for weeks that didn't seem to be getting fixed. I had heard so many wonderful things about cable that with all the problems, I knew I was missing something!
