I am trying to post a picture of the cranes in my yard, but I can't get it to work.

It was really foggy this morning. Muriel, I bet your birds are a lot cheaper to feed. These guys go through 50lbs of corn a week.

Dec - these guys are Finches and they only eat thistle. Once the word got out, we have all the Finches in town! Thistle is expensive, but not nearly as bad as 50 lbs. of corn!!

Dec - this is a picture of the ground below the bird feeder. They're very sloppy! The black stuff is all thistle. The dish was for extra thistle for the "overflow".

Where do you live?

The finches are so cute. The birds in my yard are sandhill cranes. Very noisey, but fun to watch. There are usually 12 or 13 of them but sometimes as many as 18.

december3: Having just moved from SW Fl to philly, I miss the snowy egrets, sandhill cranes, woodpeckers, and great blue herons. A lady sort of by our place used to have flocks of wood storks, herons, and egrets on her house, car, and all over. I asked her what she fed them, and she threw out fish twice a day. What a fabulous show.
We set up the feeders first thing, and have a bunch of black capped chickadees, cedar waxwings, cardinals, and an unknown variety coming over already. We have woods and a babbling brook out back.
Great pix!!!

LOL, My husband just got home and read about the fish. He said he didn't mind paying for the corn, but the fish are for him not the birds.

You guys are lucky. All I see this time of year is seagulls, ravens and crows. If I get lucky I might see some chickadees.

My birds have finally returned. The feeder has attracted lots of blue jays, cardinals, finch types and some very odd looking doves with very small heads. They are a soft grey/brown and I don't recognize them but I am going to the library to see if I cand find out what they are.
I will have to take some pictures.

We have 6 gold finches that feed here, a bunch of sparrows and house finches, a pair of Cardinals, and one Tufted Titmouse that shows up about once a week.

I love the gold finches the best, and am looking forward to them getting their color back in the spring. We try to get pictures, but it's difficult.

I have about 20 Doves, many finches, and a few Humingbirds. Every once in awhile a Hawk comes to try and catch the finches, but doesn't have any luck..thank goodness! Oh yea and that pesky Blue Jay that steals the squirrels peanuts that I put on the window sill.

I've had a couple of Bald Eagles circling overhead the last few days. I think they are hungry for Fat Cats.

My cat watches the cranes from the living room window. I guess she's dreaming of what she could do with a 4 ft tall bird.

I watched a cat approuch a flock of wild geese this summer. Two of the "watchgeese"
that keep their heads up went on an intercept course and were approuching with their wings spread a bit and their necks curled back like a snake ready to strike. The cat seemed rather unbelieving that the birds were chasing it, but when they were about 3 feet away it decided that was a lot more bird than it wanted to deal with and ran.

I have about 4 birdfeeders under my trees.
and yes Muriel, they are slobs!
but they can't beat the turkeys though...

my blackwing birds looooves to 'scoop' the seed out. which is bad for me because the feeders will be empty within a day.

so I had to put a small piece of chicken wire over the seed (enough room for birds to 'peck' but not for 'scooping').

last year, I had a mystery.
I keep finding birdfeeders on the ground.
Then I discovered pieces of fur that belonged to the raccoon.
he had been climbing the tree, jumped on the feeder, knocked it to the ground, and merrily stuffed his face with food.

I had to place very small nails (to cause discomfort to the raccoon - NOT to cause harm) on the top of the feeder.

hadn't any further trouble with the raccoon lately...

I hate birds. They crap on my deck and all over my car. We have wild parrots in our neighborhood. While they are pretty to look at, they make an awful ruckus. We also have some pretty mean blue jays. You have to look out for them because they will dive bomb you when you are working in the yard.

Love the cranes! We have huge flocks of them here in the corn fields. Not like they used to be, when the sky would be full as far as you could see, and you could hear them inside a closed up house!

They wake me up every morning. They screech until I go out and feed them. Then they do this crane dance where they jump and flap their wings. I love them.
