Here's the big local news story from yesterday:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Maui Brush Fire Out of Control
On Maui an out of control brush fire is creating major problems. The fire has already scorched an estimated 500 acres of brush land between Olowalu and Launiupoko State Park. Honoapi'ilani Highway, the main road in and out of Lahaina, is closed.
The Maui Fire Department has four companies fighting the fire on the ground and three helicopters fighting the fire from the air. State forestry workers and volunteers are also battling the blaze. The fire started about ten o'clock this morning and has been fueled by strong wind. No one has been hurt and no developed property is in immediate danger. People are able to get from Lahaina to Wailuku and Kahului by driving around the West Maui Mountains on Kahekili Highway. But only local residents are allowed to use that road to drive back into Lahaina.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
That road that they're talking about, Kahekili, is one that the rental car agencies tell you not to go on, and if you get stranded there, you're on your own... so a lot of people missed outgoing flights yesterday off of the island.
I'm far enough south that it doesn't affect me, though.

Speaking of...how IS the fire, Cat? Im trying to visualize where it is...is it UP, by the Carlton Ritz? Or on THIS side of Lahaina...going towards mile 14?

On this side, going toward mile 14 from Lahaina. That's why ppl had to drive up past Kapalua and around to get to the Windward side the hard way. It's all pau now and the roads are open again. We could see the smoke yesterday when we were at the beach, looking up around that bend where the mountain juts out in between South Maui and Lahaina.

Midmorning, the SS Maui rolls gently at anchor. A few hands loll casually in the strengthening Winter sun. Many are ashore.
A shout is heard, quickly taken up. The commotion's cause is quickly ascertained as the horizon darkens with wave upon wave of...seagulls. They circle, dive, attack!
No offense, just the vision that popped into my head.
Serendipity & Peace...
