Congratulations! Got a new computer for Christmas, so I know the feeling. I'm looking for a new camera but I can't make up my mind. What's Starband?

For those of you who have "DirecTV" from Hughes, "DirectPC" is also now available...seems to be the same type of service @$40 a month for unlimited "bring your own" access, and @$300 for a dish that will recieve both the Net, and DirecTV.
Have FUN IMLDS2...I am envious because the DirectPC is my "tax refund" purchase, so I will have to wait a bit yet!!

Actually I almost bought DIRECT PC/TV...but it still would require an extra phone line ($15. mo)...and an ISP (they were pushing AOL...for $19.95 mo...if I kept PRODIGY it would cost $39.mo plus $22 for prodigy)...
I really wanted to get rid of my other line-and Prodigy...so we decided to go with STARBAND. The money I'm saving from not having cable anymore-nor the extra line-nor Prodigy will about be equal to the superior service of STARBAND fee.
It is the NEW WAVE of the future...so fast it is like your own direct line.

Actually, DirectPC no longer requires a phone line for the uplink...direct to Sat just as StarBand...in fact , DirctPc was one of the top picks this year at the CES in Vegas....and I agree TOTALLY that this is the wave of the future...out here in the sticks, we don't even have ACCESS to Cable or DSL, but this is faster anyway!!!

Let us know if you get chat from ET.
I can see some BEM hanging around behind the
satellite in his saucer to learn to chat with the natives. Which remindes me I have not seen a post from sargent Mike lately.

After the dial-up ISP at the local rural telephone company, where being the owners son and being able to spell 'dot com' gets you a IT job for life (and where the term "customer service" gets a rather rude and trashy reverse spin to its connotation), Starband is heaven. I wasn't too impressed with the guy who came out to install it (he had to come back the next day because he forgot to do something important, Duheee ) and I just knew I had probably made a Big mistake. But, other than a few missteps on my part which required re-entering some settings and having my signal to noise ratio constantly dipping below the 6.4 parameter suggested (can't say it has really affected my speeds) due to wind, I think, I got no complaints.
I guess if I do have any repairs needed come future I'll have to have Jethro back out (he said he was only one of four guys in the entire state at that point - I live in Oklahoma), so I'm keeping my fingers crossed on the reliability front.
Incidentally, I was the first in my area and the third in the state to avail themselves of this technology. I'm either going to feel really smart and all cutting edge for some time, or at any given moment feel like the biggest doofus alive. Certainty - who needs you?

I live in Oklahoma too! Where do you live? I live in a tiny town 15 minutes from Ft. Smith AR..
Yep...cable NOR phone are going to be up for at least a YEAR!
I know what you mean about the salesman etc being in the dark. I went to several places and asked them about it...they had no idea what I was talking about. Actually, they were rather INTIMIDATED by my knowledge and papers I had in my hand from searching it out on the net...
Some simply ignored me...
My hubby is going to install it himself...he works for the Fed Govt. in Gore,OK.
Good to hear it works well in the rural areas like me!

I live on a farm halfway between Tulsa and Oklahoma City outside a tiny town and about 15 minutes from the nearest paved road (I like to tell people that I live on the edge of reason). Don't normally get much traffic by the place so I've got my office set up so I can sit directly in front of the window and rest my eyes on the valley or sunset. Of late it seems the traffic has increased and the pickup trucks drive by,real slow. When you live in an area where folks are prone to think satellite dishes refer to dinnerware from NASA, well, I guess it's to be expected.
Love the elliptical look of it! You'll probably get big winds over there, too. But, like I said, it doesn't seem to have affected my speeds yet. I really love going away to have a sandwich or something and coming back an hour later, wiggle my mouse and get right back to work like I never paused. Too Cool!!
