The son is getting married and they want to have a true Scottish wedding, kilts and all.
Anyone ever been to one or know the protocol?
We've (both families) have done searches and can't find anything that really tells you how to go about it.
Unlurking,
Calamity

Wish you'd delurk more often....it's good to see you.
Since you're you searching under *weddings* and not getting anywhere, maybe try under Scottish *traditions* instead? Sure seems like there'd be some history somewhere that could be informative.
Best of luck in your search.
Congratulations on the upcoming wedding. They're always fun.

calamity - I did a search on Scottish weddings and this was the first one that popped up.
BOOKS TO BUY
Scottish Tartan Weddings: A Practical Guidebook
Up-to-date advice in hardback.
Buy online from Amazon US or Amazon UK
Getting Married in Scotland
Paperback by Iona McGregor
An enlightening and entertaining look at the customs and issues surrounding weddings in Scotland from the Reformation to the modern day.

So....maybe by doing a book search you could come up with some help.

Me again....
Not being one who gives up easily....I just typed in 'Scottish Weddings' in my search mode and came up with several sites. I've listed some below. Hope these at least give you a start.
http://www.tartans.com/traditions/wedding.html
http://www.weddingcircle.com/ethnic/scot/scotch.htm
http://www.mywebpage.net/somethingdifferent/

Hi Calamity, I don't know beans about a Scottish wedding but it looks like Linda_K has given you some good leads.
Just wanted to say hi and I'm glad to see you've unlurked!
Not paranoid anywhere else but here!

Thanks Linda and mybid,
Linda,
I can't believe you found all of those sites. That is just great. What search engine do you use?
It's good to see both of you again. I've been lurking because I got sick of typing. I'm not very good at it and it takes forever.
My son found a place where you can rent kilts fairly close. So that is taken care of but I know there is alot more to it than kilts. I can't believe his groomsmen have agreed to wear kilts, to tell the truth.
Anyway, the sites you listed look like just what I need, Linda.
Again, thank you.

A good search engine to try is http://www.metacrawler.com. It searches the other search engines. Quite a few Scottish wedding links to be found there.

Calamity - Good, glad they might be of some help.
I was searching on my webtv and it uses infoseek. When I do a search on our computer, I usually use Alta Vista or Ask Jeeves.
Some others are:
Yahoo
Excite
Hot Bot
Dog pile
...and as RainyBear has suggested there are search engines that search all search sites.
Anyway, one of those that I posted sells Scottish favors, etc. But at least it might give you some ideas for favors you might make, or customs your son and his bride-to-be might want to adopt for their wedding.
Have fun and keep us updated.

My friend went to a wedding in Scotland once, and they had those disposable cameras on the reception tables for guests to take photos. The bride was dismayed to find that half the photos were surreptitious shots under the table as guests tried to find out what was under a Scotsman's kilt.

Several years ago two girlfrineds and I were on a travel tour which included stop in Edinbough. We watched as a pipe band paraded by and we got to giggling about what was worn under the Scotsman's kilt. The parade was ending and there were several band members starting to pack up their gear. My girlfriends dared me to ask one of the men what was worn under the kilt.
These guys are all hunk and all man (You have to have an attitude to wear a kilt). I approached the nearest man and boldly asked him what he wore under the kilt.
He looked directly into my eyes and said "Give me your hand, lassie".
My cheeks were still red as I was reporting back to my girlfriends. One said, "Well, did you?"
What would you have done?

Lisa, debonair,
Your posts are hilarious. I've already informed them that they will be wearing underwear for however much good it will do.
Don't think I will check.
Linda,
I had forgotten all about Dog pile. I used it alot before the Great Crash. I've been to some of the sites you suggested and am really getting into this now. Just don't want to become the mother or mother-in-law from Hades.
Thanks all,
Calamity
edited to add Rainybear, I can't believe all of the sites metacrawler just turned up. Thought I would come back to tell you. All I got before asking you all were sites having to do with "canned" weddings in Scotland.

OT kilt story: My little brother wore his kilt for Prom with a tux jacket. Looked great!
However, I don't know how he had the....er....guts to do it.
My mom made him wear underwear out of the house, but he ditched it asap.
As for what *real* Scottsmen wear under? Well, ever notice that inside front pocket? Ever wonder *why* it's there?

My cousin just recently had a "Scottish Wedding". I'm not sure how traditional it was. Everything was just as a regular wedding, only the groom and groomsmen wore kilts and the bride wore a plad scarf (I don't know what it is actually called) across one sholder(like a beauty pagant banner). Each groomsman wore their traditional clan's plaid pattern. My cousin wore the same pattern as the groom. Don't know if that's the way it's done or if she would have worn her own clan pattern if she had one. Many of the guest wore kilts and "scarves". Their wedding invitation had said "KILTS OPTIONAL".
There is a seller who sells traditional Scottish items including kilts. You can find him in a search of "kilts". I would imagine you could contact him for info.
I have a couple of pictures. Tried to make them small no luck! I'll never figure that out!

Calamity49 - I'm glad Metacrawler turned up some good links for you!
I just had to post that I think men in kilts are soooo sexy, and I just melt when I hear a Scottish accent. One of my friends in college was from Scotland and he had a kilt which he wore around the dorm every once in a while. Mmmmmmmm....
That accent also got him out of a traffic ticket or two. When he was pulled over he'd be very friendly and put on his thickest Scottish accent. Very charming!
So, debonair, did you? I'm guessing yes.

Actually he said "Nothing is worn under the kilt. Everything is in perfect working order".
I was tempted, but took his word for it. (I shoulda, coulda, woulda. Would you?)

Hmm, back in my single days, perhaps I would have... but I'd have to be in a really special mood.
